Re: [Air-L] research papers on computer viruses

Stefano - I actually think this is a really good question. The Open Source movement deals a lot with issues of trust. See the Open Source group at MIT which used to publish a great deal to this list: Subject: [Air-l] New papers on freesoftware.mit.edu | opensource.mit.edu also Matt Ratto did an interesting presentation in this area a while ago that related to trust and open source. You definitely want to look at his papers (not necessarily this one): Ratto, M. (2004). Why is this penguin angry? Linux, social values and emotional attachments. Internet Research 5.0: Ubiquity?, University of Sussex, Association of Internet Researchers. So there's plenty of evidence about trust of various kinds fostered (or not) by internet-based interactions in Open Source and also in the Surveillance research Lyon, D. and E. Zureik, Eds. (1996). Computers, surveillance, and privacy. Minneapolis, University of Minnesota Press. but none I know about viruses. However, I would look at the journal: Journal of Computer Information Systems It is online and should be very helpful. For trust & ICTs there is a classic chapter: Perolle, J. (1991). Conversations and trust in computer interfaces. Computerization and controversy: Value conflicts and social choices. R. Kling and C. Dunlop. Boston, Academic Press: 350-363. The second edition was printed in 1996, and there may be later work from Perolle that might be useful to you. Cheers, Denise Denise N. Rall, PhD. I was wondering. Can someone point me to interesting research papers on the theme of "Computer Viruses", from social-cultural-media points of view. Survey on trust and the Internet
by Jordan McCarthy 07 Mar '09

07 Mar '09

Hi everyone, I'm a student at Stanford University, and I'm doing a bit of research on how our conceptions and practices of trust may be changing as we adapt to various online environments. I'm not sure if this list is the right venue for this sort of request (if not, my sincerest apologies; I'm new here), but since I'm trying to get responses from people of a wide range of ages and backgrounds, and the only population I have direct access to consists almost exclusively of students, I figured I'd at least give it a try. At any rate, if you'd be willing to take 10-15 minutes to fill out my /informal survey/ (I certainly didn't run this by an IRB, and I notice that's been a recent topic of discussion), I'd be most grateful. The survey can be found here: http://tinyurl.com/am2d3g or here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=quECTteWJ3r0334ogUksdw_3d_3d Thanks very much, Jordan McCarthy Jordan McCarthy Residential Computing RCC/LNA Class of 2011 Stanford University

Re: [Air-L] facebook research - need some thoughts on facebook and research ethics
by marybeth deline 06 Mar '09

06 Mar '09

Hi Everyone Thanks for your questions, comments and suggestions. Sorry it's taken so long to get back to you - being a newbie I had some problems responding to the list but Holly's helped me fix that (thanks Holly!) First, I should clarify that I am in no way trying to subvert either Facebook's Terms of Service or Research Ethics through my project - I'm trying to put them together and identify areas where they don't seem to match up so I can highlight them and provide possible solutions to them in my Ethics application. I'm doing this now rather than later in the process to determine if such a project is even feasible. Re: FB's Terms of Service, I've gone through them extensively (and with a fine-toothed comb!) but being a newbie to the list wasn't sure if this was the right place to air my specific questions about them and take up in-box space - I've had several people go over my specific concerns off list (thank you!), and if anyone else is interested in doing so, please feel free to get in touch. I should probably have been clearer about the project - when I said using Facebook as a site for an 'intervention' I meant an experiment, using a Facebook application to provide participants with information on their profile pages, which would also be observable (and subject to comments) from their friends. Both the participants and their friends would have to consent to the project - deception is not part of the design and will not be used. Jennifer, thanks for the direct to Stephanie's stuff - I'll take a look at it. Cheers MB

Student members of IRB
by James Watt 06 Mar '09

06 Mar '09

At a meeting of our IRB today a question came up that I thought I would ask of the list. It involves human subjects, which has been a topic on this list at various times. Since many of our human subjects are students, and there is a general requirement of IRB's to include representation of subject populations on IRB's, one of the members suggested that it might be appropriate to appoint a student member to the IRB. Another person said he had never heard of an IRB that had student members. This generated some interesting discussion of the pro's and con's of student representation. Are any of you aware of an IRB that includes students? You can reply off-list, if you want. If there is interest, I can summarize replies on-list later. ======================================================== James H.
