New OA Book "Digital Media, Denunciation and Shaming: The Court of Public Opinion"

Dear colleagues, We are excited to announce the publication of our new open-access book "Digital Media, Denunciation and Shaming: The Court of Public Opinion" (by Daniel Trottier, Qian Huang, Rashid Gabdulhakov) This book offers a common set of concepts to help make sense of online shaming practices, accounting for instances of discrimination and injury that morally divide readers and at times risk unjust and disproportionate harm to those under scrutiny. Digital media denunciation has become a primary form of expression and entertainment across media environments, with new socially desirable forms of accountability under movements such as #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter addressing longstanding forms of systematic and interpersonal abuse. Building on recent scholarship on shaming, surveillance and denunciation in fixed contexts, this study generates a cross-contextual and multi-actor account of practices like ‘cancel culture’, ‘doxing’ and ‘status degradation ceremonies’. It addresses instances of moral ambivalence by discussing how digital shaming becomes normalised and embedded across socio-cultural and institutional settings. The authors establish key actors and practices in online denunciations of individuals in a range of cases and contexts, including responses to COVID-19, political polarisation, and social justice movements, as well as more local and quotidian circumstances. They draw from empirical data including interviews with nearly 100 individuals targeted by mediated shaming and/or involved in these practices, as well as ethnographic observations of digital vigilantism and discourse analysis of press coverage and online comments relating to online shaming. Diverse applications and contexts, including China, the UK, Russia, and Central Asia, are considered, advancing an ambivalent understanding of media and denunciation that reconciles progressive and regressive practices, as well as celebratory and critical accounts of these practices. This book is recommended reading for advanced students and researchers of online visibility and harm across media studies, cultural studies and sociology. Call for papers: Special Issue of Surveillance & Society on Resisting Surveillance through Data Visibility and Invisibility

Hello everyone, Please consider sending a paper to a special issue of Surveillance & Society: *Resisting Surveillance through Data Visibility and Invisibility *(papers due 1 March 2025). I am one of the guest editors for this issue. Building upon the critical theories of data feminism, data justice, and data colonialism, amongst others, this special issue invites contributors to reflect critically and creatively on the ideas of data visibility and data invisibility (Taylor 2017). Topics may include (but are not limited to) the following: - How might people disengage from data markets and/or work to correct, erase, or disrupt state or corporate datasets, such as the right to opt-out of discriminatory profiling programs? - What surveillance practices might enable certain populations to gain greater visibility to governments with the intention of enabling equity-seeking groups to access rights, services, and justice? - What resistance strategies may be undertaken to enable greater invisibility from state/corporate surveillance practices? - What creative sabotage might enable people to resist or disrupt governmental or corporate surveillance programs? - How might “data capitalism” be reformed or destabilized, such as by restricting the monetization of certain types of data? - How might social movements offer new or radical resistance to datafication practices by governments or corporations? - What collective practices might be designed to fairly share data’s social and economic benefits amongst the public? - How might community-led data collection practices help counter the informational and power asymmetries inherent in state and/or corporate surveillance practices? - What are the limits of individual- or community-based resistance to state and/or corporate surveillance practices? *Submission Information*: This special issue invites contributors from across the social sciences and humanities to further develop the above-noted research projects. We welcome submissions from both Global South and Global North perspectives, as well as those that challenge colonial and western perspectives on anti-surveillance strategies. We are also particularly interested in work that centers the experiences and perspectives of historically marginalized groups. We also welcome innovative or alternative methodologies or creative expression. Submissions will undergo a peer-review and revision process prior to publication. How, then, does this work in practice? How has the introduction of new justice technologies – such as video-enabled proceedings, fully remote court hearings, and online conviction or dispute resolution procedures – affected public observation of the system? How should we balance privacy and rehabilitation related rights with the public’s right to know about legal cases? These are questions that have preoccupied Judith Townend’s research and resulted in her co-authored monograph, *Observing Justice* (with Lucy Welsh, BUP, 2023 https://bristoluniversitypress.co.uk/observing-justice) and the establishment of the Courts and Tribunals Observers’ Network ( https://courtobservers.org/ <https://eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcourtobse…>). Her research has considered the control and processing of justice system data in different jurisdictions (Australia, Canada and Ireland, as well as England and Wales) and she has long advocated for increased public involvement in the development of policy and guidance on open justice/transparency practices. In this inaugural lecture, hosted by the University of Dundee Law School and Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science, Townend will summarise some of her key findings from her internationally comparative work on justice system data, empirical findings from court observations and research among former criminal defendants, and analysis of court rules and guidance. She will propose an international research and policy agenda for the technology and transparency of justice systems, that could be applied in the context of the Scottish courts. This would prioritise improving the quality, availability and governance of justice system data, pay attention to jurisdictional specificities in practice as well as law, and seek opportunities for public engagement in law and policymaking on open justice and justice system technologies (including AI-based tools). She is an associate research fellow at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies, and fellow at the civil society organisation Connected by Data. Her socio-legal research is concerned with freedom of expression and public access to information, and she has developed a particular expertise and interest in the practice and policy of open justice. Extension to submit to the Human-Machine Communication Syllabus Project - New Deadline: Sept. 27th, 2024. See the call below: Communication and media research is expanding to include artificial intelligence and robotics, and this broadening of the study of communication also has extended to the classroom. Scholars who are integrating human-machine communication into their courses are invited to participate in the Human-Machine Communication Syllabus Project by Andrea L. Guzman, Northern Illinois University, and Jason E. Archer, Michigan Technological University. The purpose of the project is two-fold: First, we aim to study how scholars are conceptualizing human-machine communication and incorporating it as a subject of study within higher education . Second, we want to offer scholars the opportunity to voluntarily share and access HMC syllabi to support education in this emerging area. The research portion of the project focuses on how educators are integrating aspects of human-machine communication into courses at the undergraduate (associate, bachelor’s) and graduate (master’s, PhD) levels. Human-machine communication can be defined as meaning-making among humans and communicative machines (i.e. smart assistants, robots, generative AI, automated journalism) and the implications of such technologies for self, culture, and society. Its study draws from and has applications to the full realm of communication and media research and, in particular, encompasses aspects of human-computer interaction (HCI), human-robot interaction (HRI), human-agent interaction (HAI) and critical and cultural approaches regarding technologies articulated as communicators. (See below for additional HMC resources.) For the study, we are seeking syllabi for courses that focus primarily on human-machine communication and its applications as well as courses in which at least 25% of the content covered is dedicated to some aspect of human-machine communication and/or its application. To support teaching and learning, we are also creating a public repository of HMC syllabi submitted for this project. We are asking submitters whether they would like their syllabi to be included in a publicly-accessible online location to assist others in the development of HMC-related courses. Inclusion of an individual’s syllabus in the public repository is completely voluntary and does not affect their ability to participate in the research project. The researchers will destroy all syllabi not included in the repository after the completion of the research project. The repository will be made publicly available at a future date when all syllabi have been received and reviewed. The deadline to submit your syllabi to the project is September 27th, 2024. Indicate whether the course is for undergraduate (associate, bachelor’s), graduate (master’s, PhD), or both 5. Date: The term in which the course is being or was last taught (i.e. Spring 2024). 6. Course description 7. Course objectives/outcomes 8. Reading list identifying all readings AND/OR course schedule including all readings 9. Be written in English or translated into English by the author There is no limit to the number of syllabi an individual can submit. For recurring courses, submit ONLY the most recent version of the syllabus. Participants do NOT have to format the syllabi a certain way or remove extraneous information from the syllabi; although, they may want to remove personal or sensitive information if submitting to the public repository. Voluntary Inclusion in Public Repository The format of the public repository will be dependent upon the number of syllabi received. Possible distribution options include a folder in Google Drive or a dedicated page on an existing website. All syllabi to be included in the repository will be posted “as is” and will be available to the public (i.e. anyone on the internet). Participants voluntarily submitting to the repository are responsible for removing any information they do NOT want shared publicly such as their name, contact information, office/student-meeting hours, links to online learning systems, policies, etc. The syllabi of participants who do not want to contribute to the repository will be stored separately and only be available to the researchers.
