* Call for Abstracts * AlgoSoc International Conference 2025 The Future of Public Values in the Algorithmic Society April 10-11, 2025 | Felix Meritis in Amsterdam, the Netherlands We invite abstracts for ‘The Future of Public Values in the Algorithmic Society’, a two-day international conference hosted by AlgoSoc, taking place at Felix Meritis in Amsterdam on April 10 and 11, 2025. Public Values in the Algorithmic Society (AlgoSoc) is an interdisciplinary research program which responds to the urgent need for an informed societal perspective on automation and automated decision-making. Grounded in a deep understanding of the systemic changes that automated decision-making systems imply for core public institutions, for society, and for how public values are conceptualised and ultimately realised, AlgoSoc develops solutions for the design of governance frameworks needed to complement technology-driven initiatives in the algorithmic society. AlgoSoc is a Dutch government funded collaboration between the universities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Delft, Utrecht and Tilburg, integrating expertise from law, computer science, the humanities and social sciences. * Conference Theme * Realising public values in the algorithmic society is only in parts a technological challenge and there are limits to what can be achieved with value-sensitive technology design. More than anything, realising public values in AI, algorithms and computational infrastructures is a profound societal challenge that involves a whole ecosystem of actors and depends on the complex social, cultural, economic, technical, organisational, and institutional contexts, in which these systems are grounded, used, and contested. Similarly, public values are not static but develop dynamically in response to new technologies, social transformations, (political) power struggles, and the myriad interactions of people with technologies. Current regulatory approaches around the world aim to make digital technology more responsible, more ethical, and more cognisant of the values that characterise the societies in which they are embedded. The EU AI Act is a point in case, seeking to make AI trustworthy and ensuring that: “AI systems respect fundamental rights, safety and ethical principles.” The primary goal of the US Executive Order is that AI systems function as intended, are resilient against misuse or dangerous modifications, are ethically developed and operated in a secure manner, and are compliant with applicable Federal laws and policies. And in China, Generative AI must adhere to “Core Socialist Values”. Common to all these approaches is that they are technology-centric, concentrating on the process of developing and deploying AI products and services in society. The goal of this conference is to re-center the debate on public values in AI, algorithms and their computational infrastructures, from a primarily technological to a societal challenge. The Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS) funds innovative projects that deal with the social opportunities and challenges of the digital transformation. We support individual researchers and groups. You want to spend a sabbatical in a vibrant interdisciplinary research community? Become a fellow at CAIS! A fellowship at the Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS) releases you from your regular work obligations and opens up new perspectives. As a fellow, you can spend either six or three months in Bochum, Germany. During this period, we will finance your sabbatical leave from work through compensation (e.g. for a teaching substitute). Alternatively, we will pay grants of up to 2.000 € per month. You can invite guests for collaboration and will receive financial support for research expenses. Individual offices and meeting rooms with modern facilities offer optimal working conditions. In addition, we will provide comfortable apartments free of charge. In collaboration with 10 local and international partners and 25 scholars, this cluster based at UTSC studies the potential for creative workers to generate transformative technological and social futures in Canada and internationally today. What, how, and why do we need a set of critical ethical approaches to digital research in the wake of challenges posed by Artificial Intelligence (AI) – the latest in a series of technological transformations not just to the creative sector but to society itself? How can we imagine and design critical and creative futures for creative workers considering this latest AI context? A multi-disciplinary approach is required to address urgent needs arising from the sprawling, often exploitative digital worlds where we live and work. The environments, working conditions, and ways of working in these worlds usually intensify rather than mitigate social inequities. The CLCF cluster brings together faculty across several arts, culture, and media fields of study to offer collaborative and community engaged approaches that can address racialized, gendered, colonial, economic, and geopolitical power dynamics at play in the AI context. While addressing such conditions is important for the sector and the workers therein, there is a larger socio-cultural contribution we aim to make: to critically imagine and design insightful and joyful futures in the context of ubiquitous digital demands and opportunities, including the recent explosion of AI in our work worlds and lives. Our project has four thematic areas: * Theme 1: Contexts and Constraints: Political Economy of AI and the Digital Today * Theme 2: Creativity: Artistic Responses to AI in a Digital World * Theme 3: Conditions for Change: Policies and Practices for Sustainable Working Conditions * Theme 4: Collectivities: Grassroots Organizing for and against AI This position offers an opportunity to join a new project that seeks to advance interdisciplinary responses to the AI context considering arts, culture and media sectors, developing policy-oriented and community-oriented research. Are you interested in investigating digital platforms in societies and modern organizations? We are now looking for a Doctoral Researcher in computational research of platformed organizing. Generative Technologies in Communicative Organizing (GET:ORG) is a Research Council of Finland-funded project that develops computational methodology to investigate this social phenomenon. In GET:ORG, we theorize and empirically analyze the agency of novel interactive and generative technologies, such as automated conversations, categorizations, feeds, and AI assistants, in both producing and constraining organizing. The candidate’s work will be focused on conducting doctoral research toward the completion of a doctoral dissertation within the GET:ORG project. It will mainly consist of research activities including research design, methodology development, data analysis, theory building, article writing, and sharing the created knowledge through conferences and journal publications. Moreover, the candidate is encouraged to join the emerging research community at the intersection of organization/organizational communication research and computational methodology. Opportunities to gain experience in academic teaching are also available. While your institutional home base will be at the Unit of Knowledge and Information Management at Tampere University, your day-to-day team includes members from the University of Helsinki and the University of Jyväskylä. Call for papers Coded Ethics: Decision-Making and the Responsible Development of Automated Digital Technologies Journal of Responsible Technology https://www.sciencedirect.com/journal/journal-of-responsible-technology/abo… In order to understand what responsible innovation in AI looks like in practice, we need to build repositories of first-hand accounts of people working in the field. These accounts can serve both to inform and inspire others in the field as well as contribute to a more empirically grounded notion of responsibility, acknowledging the importance of political, institutional, and normative ties in different contexts. The purpose of this special issue is to foster transdisciplinary dialogues about responsible innovation in automated digital technologies. Unlike other literature in this space, however, our focus will not be on algorithmic decision-making. Instead, we want to draw attention to human decision-making in AI development and/or use. We are giving preference to contributions authored by transdisciplinary teams (for example, data scientists and sociologists as co-authors). However, we also welcome single-discipline submissions that address both technical and ethical decision-making in the development and use of automated systems. In either case, it is important that contributors focus on human decision-making rather than algorithmic decision-making. We invite authors to focus specifically on identifying and/or suggesting answers to fundamental questions about human decision-making during the responsible development and deployment of automated digital technology. We are particularly interested in why and how decisions that have significant ethical import are often interpreted as purely technical choices. This can be broadly understood as veiled ethical agency, or the un/conscious ethical decisions made during the development and deployment of digital technology that are invisible to its end users, and sometimes even to the developers themselves, because of the primacy given to the technical choices needed to make the system work. The outcome of these transdisciplinary dialogues will provide insight into fundamental ethical questions that transdisciplinary development teams are advised to take into consideration during the development and deployment of automated digital technologies.
