I recommend you to use the free download version of UCInet (http://www.analytictech.com/downloaduc6.htm) UCInet is easy to use and the functions are kind of intuitive if you have some network analysis background. To easily get a drawing, follow the menu Data>Import from spreadsheet>DL to upload your data, and then open your file with Visualize>Netdraw. you can also try Pajek (http://vlado.fmf.uni-lj.si/pub/networks/pajek/) which is also free both programs come with very useful and easy to follow instructions, Mariana ------ ------------------------------ Message: 3 Date: Fri, 24 Oct 2008 19:16:05 -0400 From: Peter Timusk <ptimusk(a)sympatico.ca> Subject: Re: [Air-L] simple network analysis tool To: air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org Message-ID: <BLU0-SMTP2768FF3EA393BA228036B9DC2B0(a)phx.gbl> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII; delsp=yes; format=flowed There is a plug in that works with Excel 2007 from the Microsoft Open Source Port 25 lab called Netmap download it from codeplex On 24-Oct-08, at 6:32 PM, Paul Emerson Teusner wrote: > Hi everyone, > > > > I have a small request for info. Personality & YouTube Survey
by Dominic Yeo 26 Oct '08

26 Oct '08

Dear everyone, I'm currently doing a study on the role of personality in the use of YouTube. The survey does not ask for any personally identifiable information and has been approved by the social and developmental psychology ethics committee at Cambridge University. It takes 10-15 minutes to complete. The only requirement is participants must have used YouTube in some form or another. I would greatly appreciate your assistance in taking some time in participating and publicizing the survey. http://camsocialscience.qualtrics.com//SE/?SID=SV_54GsO0wJ5NZxZOc&SVID=Prod Thanks! simple network analysis tool
by Paul Emerson Teusner 24 Oct '08

Hi everyone, I have a small request for info. I've been looking at network analysis tools currently available online/for download and have found all of them rather cumbersome and far more sophisticated than myself. Rather than endeavouring to upgrade my brain to use them, I'm wondering if anybody knows a simple program that can turn simple data on a spreadsheet into a little diagram. I have a sample of only thirty to thirty-five bloggers, and want to show connections between the sites through links and comments. I have all the data on spreadsheet, and just want to show it pictorially. Any ideas? paul emerson teusner fishers, surfers and casters - <http://teusner.org/> http://teusner.org/ bio - <http://paulteusner.org/> http://paulteusner.org/

AoL Search Data Redux
by Alex Halavais 24 Oct '08

24 Oct '08

With eye to nostalgia, I (re)raise the following question: are the data that were provided by the ill-fated AoL data release fair game for research? I could *really* use them for a current project; enough so that I will do the research. I may just never actually tell anyone about it. Which strikes me as somehow deeply wrong. For those new to the story, Eszter Hargittai tackled some of the issues here: http://crookedtimber.org/2006/08/07/the-aol-data-mess/ I did a bit here: http://alex.halavais.net/aol-data/ A piece by Nate Anderson appeared in Ars Technica: http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060823-7578.html And there were about three dozen messages to AIR-L soon after the release. Now a couple of years have passed, and I have a part of research question that can be effectively answered through these data, and without these data (or similar), answering the question is prohibitively expensive and makes use of an approach less likely to yield valid information. Although the data was used, in part, during a presentation I saw in Copenhagen, I haven't seen any published articles making use of the released data, with the exception of articles that are related to detecting inferences in data, or the privacy concerns of search engines. My personal view is that this is widely publicly available data, and has already done its harm. My use of the data would yield no personally identifiable results. Given that my research does no harm to the subjects, I think a case may be made that it is therefore a reasonable target of investigation. Please tell me why I am wrong, and why my IRB will say I am wrong. Conferencing software for next year
by Alex Halavais 24 Oct '08

24 Oct '08

Hello, IR9.0 attendees! I hope you all enjoyed Copenhagen as much as I did. As mentioned at the AGM, one part of the conference folks may not has as much fun with is our conference management system. We are currently in the process of evaluating various solutions for next year's conference, and hope to make a decision shortly. If any of you have direct experience with a conferencing system used in another organization, I would love to hear from you. Thanks! undergrad internet & society courses in comm depts in US?
by holly-kruse＠utulsa.edu 24 Oct '08

24 Oct '08

I'm trying to collect information about undergraduate courses in communication departments in the U.S. that focus on the internet/networked technologies and society. Online information about such courses in medium-sized private universities would be most helpful, but I'll take anything. I have been teaching such a course as a special topic in my department for what will be in the spring the third year in a row, and I'm trying to convince members of my department that a course like this would be a reasonable addition to the curriculum and deserves a course number. Thus, I'm particularly interested in URLs that point to course descriptions or catalogs that I can include in materials to give to my colleagues. Thanks in advance for any help with this! ----- Holly Kruse Faculty of Communication The University of Tulsa 800 S.
