Colleagues/ I'm pleased to inform you of the availability of the A/V for my Library Spring Seminar given in April 2008 - ABSTRACT _A Face(book) In The Crowd: Online Social Networks For Engaged Learning_ In April 2006, there were nearly 22,000 members of the Iowa State University community registered in Facebook. Two years later there are nearly 35,000 members, an increase of nearly 60 percent. In this presentation, we will provide an overview of Facebook; describe its major features and functionalities; and profile various institutional projects that utilize Facebook for engaged organizational outreach. Sorry for eventual cross-posting. Last Call for Papers for the Conference "The Good, the Bad and the Challenging. The user and the future of information and communication technologies" in Copenhagen, May 13th through 15th, 2009 organised by the COST Action 298 "Participation in the Broadband Society" is still open! Contributions on a broad variety of social aspects of information and communication technologies (ICTs) are welcome. Abstracts may be submitted until 15 October 2008, and should be posted via the conference website, where you will also find more informations on the the programme, the different strands and other details of the conference: http://conference2009.cost298.org/ The important dates for contributors are, at a glance: - Deadline for abstract submission: 15th October 2008 - Notification of the acceptance of abstracts: 1st December 2008 - Deadline for authors´ delivery of paper in order to be included in the printed programme and the proceedings: 1st February 2009 - Conference: 13th-15th May 2009 The abstracts can cover a range of contributions such as empirical studies, literature reviews, theoretical discussions, etc. But in all cases authors should provide background information relating to the topic, the actual question being addressed, methodology if appropriate and indicate main findings, arguments or conclusions. All abstracts should be prepared in electronic form. Abstracts must be written in English and typed with single line spacing. No formulas, symbols, mathematical notation or sub/superscripts are allowed. Abstracts should be 300-600 words. No abstract fee is required. Authors are required indicate in which strand the paper would most appropriately fit and make use of the template for the abstract that will be available online. Both academics and practitioners are invited to submit presentations. Given the interdisciplinary nature of the conference, abstracts will be reviewed by a combination of members of the Steering Committee, the International Programme Committee and others with relevant expertise. Notification of acceptance will be given by 1st December 2009. All withdrawals should be sent to the Conference Chair. About COST 298: COST 298 is an Action in the domain `Information and Communication Technologies´ of COST, an intergovernmental framework for European Co-operation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research. In COST 298 European scientists from telecommunication research departments, universities and operators together with independent consultants collaborate in cross-disciplinary groups to analyse the social dimensions of people´s relationships to information and communication technologies. The Actions have produced a range of articles reports such as Communications on the Move: The Experience of mobile Telephony in the 1990s (1997) and the books Everyday Innovators, Researching the Role of Users in Shaping ICTs (2005) and The Social Dynamics of Information and Communication Technology (2008) based on previous conferences. Hi all I'm new to this just starting a research masters in psychology, looking into the area of persuasive technology particularly persuasion through mobile phones. I'm wondering if anyone could suggest some readings for me. I've read B.J. Foggs Persuasive* *Technology: Using Computers to Change What We Think and Do and Mobile Persuasion. I've also looked at the papers from the three International Conferences on Persuasive Technology. If people could give me some suggestions I would greatly appreciated it. Thanks Michelle

Popularity of various blogging services

Hi all, I’m trying to find out how my sample of bloggers compares to others in terms of the blogging services they use (i.e., what percentage are using LiveJournal versus Blogger versus MT/Typepad, and so on). Can anyone point me to other studies that break down their bloggers by service, or to reports about which services are the most popular? I already have the 2006 Pew report on bloggers but I would love to be able to compare my numbers to more than just that group. Thanks! In particular, I'm searching for empirical studies on using websites or email to encourage behaviours, such as those related to environmental protection, health, safety, or social development. Hi Matt, Seems like I didn't convey the whole picture. I am not doing doctoral research as yet. The study I mentioned was a term paper back home when I was doing my masters in India. I submitted it for a conference and they asked me to revise it and resubmit. This research is aside from what I plan to study going ahead in the PhD. program, which hasn't even started yet. And I have spoken to a few people already and read some relevant books in this regard to revise the methodology and address the ethics question. But I am glad you mentioned the IRB. I wasn't familiar with it but I am sure I'll learn more about it during the course of my study. Thanks a lot again Pawan

LINI launched in Lisbon and welcoming networking and sharing of research outputs

Dear Colleagues, I would like to announce the launch of LINI, Lisbon Internet and Networks International Research Programme http://www.lini-research.org . LINI is the outcome of the networking of four Portuguese research institutions (CIES, MRC, ADETTI and OberCom). LINI intends to become a key player in the networking of information and communication technologies and the scientific domains of social and political sciences, economics, management and open source technologies. Our focus of attention is Europe, Portuguese Speaking Countries and Latin America, but also extending our research to themes and areas in North America, Asia and Africa. The LINI research programme targets defined areas that are critical to the public interest and business. A crucial element of this project is the ability to identify research areas that internationally, although of critical interest to the society, have not yet been thoroughly researched by leading scientific institutions of the Social Sciences, Information and Communications Technologies and Economics and Management. Pawan, >From the sound of it you haven't got through an IRB (Institutional Review Board) process. Let me suggest that you temporarily suspend your research until you do so. At universities in the US that receive Public/Federal funding, any significant human research must get vetted by the schools IRB board (for better or worse). Since you're dealing with sexual material and the issue of whether the data you are recording is confidential or public, you're definitely in the territory of the IRB.
