New book on personal Digital Storytelling
by Knut Lundby 08 Nov '08

08 Nov '08

Dear Colleagues, you may be interested in this new book on personal Digital Storytelling: "Digital Storytelling, Mediatized Stories: Self-representations in New Media" Edited by Knut Lundby (Peter Lang) Recent years have seen amateur personal stories, focusing on "me" flourish on social networking sites and in digital storytelling workshops. The resulting digital stories could be called "mediatized stories." This book deals with these self-representational stories, aiming to understand the transformations in the age-old practice of storytelling that have become possible with the new, digital media. Among the contributors to this volume are Nick Couldry, Kirsten Drotner, Nancy Thumim, David Gauntlett, James V. Wertsch, Ola Erstad, Glynda A. Hull and John Hartley. The book draws upon the "Mediatized Stories" project www.intermedia.uio.no/mediatized/ and also relates to the research on digital storytelling at QUT in Australia www.cci.edu.au Says Charles Ess, AoIR president: "Contributors address current discussions concerning media and identity, the democratizing potential of new media, as well as significant debates regarding how we best theorize 'media' and 'mediatization'. This is a 'must-read' collection for anyone interested in global perspectives on narrative, new media, and the larger impacts and potentials of digital technologies on both our individual and collective lives as de facto global citizens." www.intermedia.uio.no/mediatized/publications www.peterlang.com/index.cfm?vID=310273&vLang=E&vHR=1&vUR=2&vUUR=1 Best wishes Knut Lundby ______________________________ Project leader MEDIATIZED STORIES www.intermedia.uio.no/mediatized/

internet and parental monitoring literature?
by Magdi Vanya 07 Nov '08

07 Nov '08

I am a research scientist working on a study of how families try to prevent adolescent drug and alcohol abuse. One aspect of our study investigates parents' use of technology (cell phones, internet) in monitoring or tracking their teen's behavior. I am wondering if you could perhaps point me to sources that address this. Thanks in advance, Magdi

convergence
by Sabryna Cornish 06 Nov '08

06 Nov '08

Hi all--I am teaching a graduate course on media convergence. I have a good idea for readings for the course, but wanted some suggestions from list serv members about what they might require graduate students to read. I am purposely not including a description of the course to see what list serv members think about when they consider the term media convergence. I will say this is a theoretically based course. Thanks in advance for any help! Sabryna Sabryna Cornish Assistant professor of journalism Department of communication Northern Illinois University

3CMedia: Making Links
by Marcus Foth 06 Nov '08

06 Nov '08

3CMedia: Journal of Community, Citizen's and Third Sector Media and Communication The Making Links 2007 Special Issue is now available online at: http://www.cbonline.org.au/3cmedia/3c_issue4/ This issue of 3CMedia continues a dialogue about the raison d’être for community organisations (including community media organisations) in times of participatory culture, media convergence and Web 2.0. Do the affordances of these socio-cultural and technical trends render the third sector less significant or even obsolete as some commentators speculate? This issue of 3CMedia has been edited by Marcus Foth and brings together research papers that explore new opportunities opened up to community sector organisations by emerging technologies. It features articles based on papers presented at the 2007 Making Links conference held at the NSW Teachers Federation Conference Centre in Sydney in October, 2007. Originating in community health networks, the Making Links conference series now targets the whole community and non-profit sector. The fifth Making Links conference will take place this year at The University of Melbourne from 11th to 13th November, with conference themes of community, responsibility and sustainability (see http://www.makinglinks.org.au/) . The Making Links issue of 3CMedia includes papers by Atari Metcalf, Christine Satchell, Ali Asghar Kia, Danny Butt, Edwina Luck and Elizabeth Buchanan. For full abstracts see: http://www.cbonline.org.au/3cmedia/3c_issue4/ 3CMedia: Journal of Community, Citizen's and Third Sector Media and Communication is a free, scholarly e-journal and is published by the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia. Late Breaking News: Businesses Embracing Online Social Networks
by McKiernan, Gerard [LIB] 05 Nov '08

05 Nov '08

Colleagues/ Within the past week or so I have discovered three (3) major reports/studies on the adoption of Online Social Networks by Businesses; These have been profiled in my Friends blog and are available individually at: [1] AMI Partners Study: Small Businesses Embrace Social Networking In The U.S. <http://onlinesocialnetworks.blogspot.com/2008/11/ami-partners-study-sma ll-businesses.html> New York, New York-November 3, 2008-More than 600,000 small businesses (SBs, or companies with up to 99 employees) in the United States will deploy integrated social networking services in the next 12 months-up from about 300,000 currently, according to the latest study by New York-based Access Markets International (AMI) Partners, Inc. [ http://tinyurl.com/6yo8az ] [2] Harnessing the Power and Potential of Social Networks <http://onlinesocialnetworks.blogspot.com/2008/10/harnessing-power-and-p otential-of.html> This report will help you: - Make use of social networks in your own organization for internal and customer-facing applications - Explore the key characteristics of successful social networking sites - Determine which approach to take when creating your social network - Consider new value-added features and services that will be competitive differentiators for your social network - Gain an understanding of the staggering valuation of sites such as Facebook - Create a trusted social network environment - Identify some of the privacy and security problems encountered by users - Appreciate the draw of social networks for the individual, including the desire to develop ones own social capital for personal and professional goals - Leverage social network analysis and the 'social graph' - Identify how IT can help address the risks and challenges of social networks [ http://tinyurl.com/6ynb7j ] [3] Network Citizens: Power And Responsibility At Work Bringing together in-depth case studies of six organisations, Network Citizens maps the key fault-lines that people and organisations will have to address in the future world of work. Not doing so puts at risk the very qualities we had invested in them: openness, innovation, collaboration and meritocracy. Since networks can act for good or ill, incubating the talents and ideas of the many, or promoting the interests of the few, the need for a new set of responsibilities is growing. If we are network members, we must be network citizens, too. [ http://tinyurl.com/6rks5d ] If (More) Businesses Recognize The Benefits Of Online Social Networks, Why Not (More) Libraries? Enjoy! /Gerry Gerry McKiernan Associate Professor Science and Technology Librarian Iowa State University Library Ames IA 50011 gerrymck(a)iastate.edu There is Nothing More Powerful Than An Idea Whose Time Has Come / Victor Hugo [ http://www.blogger.com/profile/09093368136660604490 ] Iowa: Where the Tall Corn Flows and the (North)West Wind Blows [ http://alternativeenergyblogs.blogspot.com/ ]

Hello: I just finished 23 years in computer science, and in a few years am looking to do some Internet research from home. Hello--Apologies for being self promotional here, but you can get some great Internet research training at Web Search University (www.websearchu.com)--the name sounds cheesy, but these are really excellent instructors here-mainly drawn from the library and Net search fields...and it is put on by Information Today (www.infotoday.com) which has an excellent reputation in the field Also-re: books, I've written several over the years that are designed to help researchers do more effective and precise research. The two most recent ones are The Skeptical Business Researcher (CyberAge Medford NJ), geared for business related Internet researchers; and The Art of Strategic Listening (Paramount Market Press, Ithaca NY) for doing market research on the Internet.
