CALL FOR POSTER(S): I am curating the first-ever LOLcat art show in tangent with Icanhascheezburger.com and am seeking academic posters for our opening event on October 23rd in San Francisco. The poster could be: -Showcasing your own research about internet memes, internet art movements, LOLcats, etc. -An analysis of icanhascheezburger site visitation data (I can provide this dataset) -A parody of a scientific poster done in the LOLcat style/LOLspeak patois Size: 60x40" (landscape or portrait) Deadline: Must be ready to print by Oct 21 There is design and production support available, unless you prefer to do your own poster design. We would like to keep with the standard academic poster format. A National Research Council report, years in the making and scheduled to be released Tuesday, concludes that automated identification of terrorists through data mining or any other mechanism "is neither feasible as an objective nor desirable as a goal of technology development efforts." Inevitable false positives will result in "ordinary, law-abiding citizens and businesses" being incorrectly flagged as suspects.

The Association of Independent Information Professionals (AIIP - http://www.aiip.org/) is pleased to announce that nominations are now open for our ninth annual AIIP Technology Award. Members and non-members alike are welcome to nominate any company or individual that produces information products (databases, web organizers, Internet sites) as an entry in the competition via a short and simple nominations form found online. There will be two categories; one for web based services and another for desktop software. Successful entries in each category will be new or revamped products or technologies that help information professionals with their day-to-day operations in locating, analyzing and organizing information. The product must be related to the information field; AIIP does not consider accounting, word-processing, database or spreadsheet, or other programs not directly related to locating, analyzing, or organizing data appropriate for this award. Best practices in online outreach and activism across multiple cultures

Dear AIR Colleagues, I'm asking this question on behalf of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (<http://ippnweupdate.wordpress.com/> and <http://ippnw.org>). As you can probably imagine, this group mobilizes physicians and medical students from around world to abolish nuclear weapons. They also work to prevent injuries caused by conventional weapons. IPPNW (with a little help from yours truly) is currently looking at the way that it uses online resources for outreach, activism, advocacy, and organizing among its stakeholders. While the physicians and medical students share the experience of a medical education, they are not all from a single culture and do not all speak English as a first language. Therefore the team at the international office is looking for best practices in online outreach, activism, advocacy, and organizing across multiple cultures. Any suggestions? Links to peer-reviewed research and how-to manuals would be extremely welcome. "Hack the Debate" - Twitter and CurrentTV join together

Some of you may already be aware of this. For all the debates in the US presidential election this month, CurrentTV (the network founded by former Vice President Al Gore) has collaborated with Twitter.com to run a program called "Hack the Debate." Essentially what happens is CurrentTV selects messages being posted to their Twitter channel/page and runs those messages on the bottom of the tv screen during the debates. It's a little like Pop Up Video for politics, for those who remember that show. Current and Twitter are both promoting this as being the first time this has ever been done, running live "tweets" over a tv broadcast. I'm sure it's the first time it's been done with Twitter, but running text messages over a tv broadcast has been done before, I'm pretty sure. I've participated in both of these so far. There's a severe lag between what's posted to Twitter and what appears on the television screen, leading to some unintended humor and of course the majority of the actual messages on Twitter don't appear on the television screen (the network is also filtering out profanity, etc.). At first there wasn't much interaction between people posting on the Twitter channel but during the VP debate you started to see more messages being aimed at other people posting, so who knows what will happen during these last 2 debates. http://current.com/topics/88834922_hack_the_debate PS - See some of you in Austin this week, I hope!
