Lisa e-journal (Maison de la recherche et des sciences de l’homme - Université de Caen - Normandy, France) is seeking contributors to its Spring 2010 issue on media in the U.K. and the U.S. Media In Motion: Changes in Contemporary Media in the U.K. and the U.S. The current shifts in the media industry in the U.K. and the U.S. may be ascribed to a variety of causes – widespread Internet access, the concentration of media ownership as well as the sea-change journalistic practices are now going through. The media industry is in constant motion, and raising increasingly challenging research questions in the process. The theme of movement can be analysed from multiple theoretical and methodological perspectives, which include, but are not limited to, the areas of research suggested below: - Internet and traditional media: print media, radio and television have all turned the Internet into an integral part of their development policies. What are the consequences of the increased complexity of the media environment? - Bloggers and journalists: what is the relationship between political blogs and traditional journalism? Have new forms of writing emerged? - The construction of public opinion: the globalization of information flows has gained increased prominence. What are its causes and its consequences? Is there such a thing as globalized public opinion? Do globalized information flows strengthen hyper-local coverage or more generally media localism? What is the part played by social networks such as YouTube and Daily Motion in disseminating political information? Proposals (200 - 300 words in English or in French) are invited covering either the U.S. or the U.K., or using a comparative approach. Dear all HCI International Conference 2009 Session invitation on the topic of: Usability and Sociability in Computer Games and Virtual Worlds We are inviting potential presenters to join us in the session, "Usability and Sociability in Computer Games and Virtual Worlds" in HCI International Conference 2009 which will take place in San Diego, USA, 19-21 July 2009. (http://www.hcii2009.org/) Social oriented games such as MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games) and 3D virtual worlds (e.g. Second Life) provide a flexible social space for the users to interact as well as an open space that invites the user's imagination and creativity to engage in various types of play and learning activities. One major issue of 3D virtual worlds is the usability obstacle the users have to overcome (the so-called "pain barrier") in order to fully utilise this exciting 3D social technological medium. We believe that this problem, usually due to the interface design, seriously undermines the potential of 3D virtual worlds. Unfortunately not much has been done to address this critical issue as most research in this area is oriented towards the application of 3D virtual worlds, assuming that all users are proficient in this game-like environment. Therefore we firmly believe that there is a great potential in researching these usability issues. The session aims to discuss the latest findings of usability and sociability of 3D virtual worlds. Publishing sessions

Dear all, I'm writing to provide an update on the two publishing sessions which are scheduled during the AoIR IR 9.0 conference in Copenhagen. The two sessions to which I refer are the panel titled "Scholarly Publishing in Transition: Issues, Challenges & Initiatives" scheduled on Wednesday, October 15 at 3:15 p.m. and the roundtable titled "Closed, Open or In-between? The Politics, Economics and Pragmatics of Academic Publishing" scheduled on Friday, October 17 at 9 a.m. There have been changes in session participants, and, following wonderful efforts toward cooperation, the two sessions are now linked to one another. For example, Nick Jankowski and Steve Jones (and perhaps other journal editors) will be roundtable participants for the "Closed, Open or In-between" session to be held on Friday morning. We also expect to extend discussion points that arise on Wednesday to the Friday roundtable. Please see below for information regarding each session. Because our "negotiations" have been so last-minute, we don't have available abstracts for Steve Jones' and Nick Jankowski's remarks on Friday. We are delighted that they've agreed to participate. Regards, Lisa Scholarly Publishing in Transition: Issues, Challenges & Initiatives Panel discussion at AoIR IR 9.0, Copenhagen Wednesday, October 15th, 2008, 3:15pm - 5:00pm http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=28753618322 Traditional venues for scholarly publishing are rapidly changing: established journals are moving online, online-only open access journals are proliferating, alternatives to ISI Impact Factor metrics are emerging, titles are experimenting with multimedia components, pre- print archives are being developed, and data repositories are achieving the status of publications. These and other issues are much in flux, but the rate and degree of change varies considerably between disciplines and scholarly cultures. This panel of journal editors will reflect on these changes: the issues and challenges involved, and the relevance of these developments for new media scholarship. Towards the end, the panel will open up a plenary session to discuss the implications of these developments on AoIR and its members. This discussion may include considering ways to facilitate a set of regular AoIR-themed special issues of journals. Panel members: Elizabeth A. The politics, economics and pragmatics of academic publishing Friday, October 17th, 2008, 9:00 am - 10:15 am Recent demands for a boycott of "closed-access" journals triggered a range of responses on lists (like the AoIR list) and the academic blogosphere. This roundtable discussion will offer a range of perspectives on open and closed publishing, and will try to give more nuance to any simple "closed/open" dichotomy. By including representatives from closed and open access journals, by looking at the economics of academic publishing, the processes involved in bringing journals to publication, and the complex relationship between research communities and different publishing models, the roundtable hopes to inform this discussion that directly concerns Internet researchers - in terms of ethics, professional practice and as a fundamental debate in our expanding field of inquiry. Axel Bruns: M/C Journal (www.media-culture.org.au/) was established in 1997 as an online-only, open-access journal, and since then has been able to develop a strong track record of scholarly publishing which remains accessible to wider audiences. The journal was designed from the start to harness the (then) emerging possibilities of independent online publishing, rather than primarily as a vehicle for boosting publication counts and career prospects, and continues to pursue that aim. Based in Australia but with a thoroughly international range of contributors and readers, M/C Journal may have been better able to operate outside the cut-throat tenure systems of British and American academia than similar projects elsewhere, but today it may also serve as an example for what is possible outside the commercial mainstream of scholarly publishing. Lisa McLaughlin: Within the terms of an either/or debate pitting traditional "locked-down" journals against those which are of the open access, online type, Feminist Media Studies, the Routledge/Taylor and Francis journal of which I am co-founding-editor, falls into the former category and therefore, one might surmise, is part of a publishing regime which actively works against the democratic sharing of ideas. As I support open access journal publishing, it is not my purpose to defend Feminist Media Studies within the terms of this debate but rather to address the too-simple equation of "open access publishing" with "democracy" and "locked-down journals" with "silencing." The stark language of this debate obscures a number of important considerations that associate "open access" and "locked-down" publishing. Neither of these forms of publishing are able to overcome basic circumstances in which "access" requires literacy, English is nearly the official language of publishing, and "online access" is meaningless to most persons in "lesser developed" countries. Additionally, it is necessary to understand the complex mechanisms that distinguish journals from one another, to consider, for example, questions including whether the journal is deemed elite merely because it is aligned with a scholarly association, what is the price to be paid for maintaining independence from associations and not being considered important enough to be cited in elite indexes such as ISI (thus dissuading authors from publishing in the journal), and what are the challenges of publishing out-of-the-mainstream content-for example, feminist and queer theory-regardless of whether the publication mode is open access or more traditional in operation.

Dear AOIR List Members, I wanted to announce the launch of a new blog: http://www.futuresoflearning.org/. Hosted at the University of California Humanities Research Institute at University of California, Irvine, Futures of Learning is a collective blog dedicated to the topic of new media and learning. The blog is part of the Digital Media and Learning Studio, a research network hub in development at UCHRI and funded by the MacArthur Foundation. The members of the blog are part of a project conducting an international survey of research in the field in two areas. One is an international review of research on how people are adopting digital and networked media (mobile phones, gaming, internet use and digital media production) around the world. The second area is a review of learning institutions that are incorporating new media in innovative ways. We will be using this blog as a way to share some of what we are learning, and to solicit feedback on our work in progress. We have already started posting book and article reviews as well as reports from our visits to various sites and conferences. We welcome your comments and discussion on the Futures of Learning blog. I'd just like to add that Christiania, the free state, inside copenhagen, and not far from ITU is a wonderful experience in community living. Along with that taking a day to visit Louisiana, the modern art museum 45 minutes away from copenhagen, on top of the øresund channel can hardly be a disappointment. Learning and socialisation, new media and migrant youth The life of young people seems to be increasingly saturated by technology, given their intense daily involvement with multiple internet applications such as instant messaging, blogging and web surfing. This raises questions about the nature of the learning experiences youth engage in, as the nature of the social spaces and networks youth are involved in seem to be changing. Traditional socializing spaces such as the school and the family are challenged by these new developments and new forms of literacy seem to gain importance over older ones. How learning and socialization takes place in these newly formed social spaces and networks as opposed to more traditional environments of learning and socialization forms the core interest of this project. Particular attention will be given to how this shapes the learning and socialization of immigrant youth as compared to Dutch youth. The project is primarily based on socio- cultural theories on learning and socialization and studies of education and youth in general. However, given the interdisciplinary nature of ‘Wired Up’, it aims at pushing the boundaries of these disciplines using theoretical perspectives relevant for both humanities and social sciences, such as theories on ethnicity, migration, media, culture or transnationalism. The fieldwork will partly be carried out collectively with the other 2 PhD researchers of the Wired Up program and will consist of a combination of methodologies such as survey research, social network analysis, web analysis and ethnographic work including video-interaction analysis and discourse analysis. There is a project proposal available but we expect the PhD to further elaborate this proposal according to her/his own insights in collaboration with the rest of the Wired Up team. De aanstelling zal gerealiseerd worden bij de faculteit Sociale Wetenschappen en onderdeel vormen van het onderzoeksprogramma “Development and treatment of psychosocial problems in context: Family dynamics, peers and culture” (Pedagogiek). Dit programma maakt deel uit van de nationale onderzoeksschool ISED (Institute for the Study of Education and Human Development). Vanwege het interdisciplinaire karakter van het programma zal de AIO tevens kunnen deelnemen aan cursussen en workshops uit onderzoeksscholen uit andere disciplines. Uw taken bestaan uit: • Het bestuderen van de relevante literatuur. • Het organiseren van het veldwerk samen met de twee andere AIO’s uit Wired Up. • Het superviseren van onderzoeksassistenten die een deel van de dataverzameling doen. • Het ontwikkelen van onderzoeksinstrumenten voor zowel kwantitatieve als kwalitatieve data analyse, gedeeltelijk in samenwerking met de andere AIO’s uit Wired Up. • Het publiceren over de onderzoeksresultaten in internationale wetenschappelijke tijdschriften die samen de dissertatie zullen vormen. • Het presenteren van de resultaten op internationale en nationale conferenties. • Het volgen van cursussen op post-master niveau die bovengenoemde taken vergemakkelijken. Functie-eisen Wij zoeken en excellente en enthousiaste onderzoeker met een Master in de Sociale Wetenschappen op het gebied van de (ontwikkelings)psychologie, onderwijs, pedagogiek of een verwante studie. Aantoonbare afffiniteit en ervaring met een of meerdere van de volgende thema's is zeer gewenst: culturele diversiteit, migratie, media studies, digitale leeromgevingen. Verder vragen wij: • ervaring met onafhankelijk uitvoeren van onderzoek; • training in zowel kwantitatieve als kwalitatieve onderzoeksmethoden; • affininiteit met theoretische en empirische benaderingen; • bereidheid om in een interdisciplinair, internationaal team te werken; • ervaring met diverse internet toepassingen; • uitstekende taalvaardigheid in het Nederlands (absolute vereiste); • excellente schrijfvaardighied in het Engels; • kennis van de Spaanse taal, Marokkaans Arabisch of Berber strekt tot de aanbeveling; • in principe bereidheid om een aantal maanden in de VS door te brengen voor onderzoeksdoeleinden. Arbeidsvoorwaarden Wij bieden een aanstelling voor de duur van 1 jaar met een omvang van 0,8 fte met bij goed functioneren uitzicht op een verlenging van 3 jaar (totaal 4 jaar). Uw salaris bedraagt minimaal € 2.000,- bruto per maand in het eerste jaar en loopt op tot € 2.558,- in het vierde jaar bij een volledige aanstelling (CAO Nederlandse Universiteiten).
