OT request: Gender Communication textbooks?

Hello everyone- Sorry about the slight OTness but I missed a book order deadline this week so I'm in a bit of a panic. I'm slated to teach Gender Communication next semester as an upper level undergraduate course, and it hasn't been taught here in so long the bookstore has no record of the last textbook used. I'd like to approach this by including some new media/online stuff since a lot has been written about gender dynamics in online spaces. At the least I want a recently updated textbook. Lisa e-journal (Maison de la recherche et des sciences de l’homme - Université de Caen – Normandy – France ) is seeking contributors to its Spring 2010 issue on media in the U.K. and the U.S. Media In Motion: Changes in Contemporary Media in English-Speaking Countries The current shifts in the media industry in the U.K. and the U.S. may be ascribed to a variety of causes – widespread Internet access, the concentration of media ownership as well as the sea-change journalistic practices are now going through. The media industry is in constant motion, and raising increasingly challenging research questions in the process. The theme of movement can be analysed from multiple theoretical and methodological perspectives, which include, but are not limited to, the areas of research suggested below: - Internet and traditional media: print media, radio and television have all turned the Internet into an integral part of their development policies. What are the consequences of the increased complexity of the media environment? - Bloggers and journalists: what is the relationship between political blogs and traditional journalism? Have new forms of writing emerged? - The construction of public opinion: the globalization of information flows has gained increased prominence. What are its causes and its consequences? Is there such a thing as globalized public opinion? Do globalized information flows strengthen hyper-local coverage or more generally media localism? What is the part played by social networks such as YouTube and Daily Motion in disseminating political information? Proposals (200 - 300 words in English or in French) are invited covering either a single English-speaking country, or using a comparative approach. Please send them to viviane.serfaty(a)univ-paris-est.fr before 15th January 2009, along with a short bio and list of publications. Completed articles will be due by September 15th, 2009. Hello, A bit of a shameless plug but to let people know that the full content of the Atlas of Cyberspace, a book I co-wrote in 2001, is now available for free. MA Digital Media Study to discover the new trends in global digital media and technology This is a one-year master programme (two-years part-time) in the department of Media and Communication. The programme allows students from different disciplinary backgrounds to develop skills in understanding digital media and technology in the context of a research-led department. Programme aims This MA offers an innovative interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach to contemporary technology and new media, drawing upon expertise in Media and Communication Studies. The MA examines some of the key issues confronting twenty-first century global societies through a dynamic programme that combines theoretical and applied perspectives, and is taught by a team of leading academics in the field. The department has considerable research and teaching interest in new media, technology, and media theory. Students will be encouraged to apply media theory, political and social theory and research tools in analysing and understanding digital media, as well as teaching key historical, policy and practice dimensions of new media. The programme explores key concepts and ideas in media as well as focusing on research methodologies for those undertaking research on digital media and technology. Develop advanced empirical and theoretical knowledge and understanding of digital and new media. Acquire research skills in media research methodologies Develop critical theoretical and analytical skills, improve written and oral communication skills. Understand the development of digital media and technology historically through a number of theoretical perspectives. Appreciate the role of digital technology and new media within wider social, economic and political contexts and the implications for policy formation. Develop research planning skills, time-management and project-planning skills through a substantive piece of individual research. Course outline The course structure is split across the year allowing three modules taken in each academic semester (a total of six modules) and then a dissertation over the Summer. The dissertation component allows students to either write a 20,000 word dissertation or design a research project of their own (with 10,000 word report) which draws on issues and themes developed throughout the year. Topics include: Political Economy of Media Digital Theory Digital Edge Software Studies Critical Approaches to New Media Media/Medium Theory Journalism and New Technology Philosophy of Technology Research Methods for New Media Forms Who should apply? Students interested in digital media and new media technologies, from a humanities, social science, computer science or related background. Professionals interested in the challenge of digital media both in terms of their professional practice, but also related to fields in policy research and public administration.
