Philippa, Just in case it's of any help, I've recently finished a piece on the same subject (i.e. the relation between new technologies and the construction of national identities). It's due to come out shortly as 'WikiNation: On Peace and Conflict in the Middle East', Cultural Politics, Volume 5, Issue 1, 2008, pp.5-26. I've provided an abstract for you below. But a wikified, open access, open editing and free content version of the whole essay is available at: http://hyper-cyprus.pbwiki.com/Hyper-Cyprus Gary *Abstract* This article begins by analysing critically the usefulness of the recent political philosophy of Chantal Mouffe for reconceptualising ideas of peace and conflict. It takes as its focus for doing so the situation of the Middle East. It proceeds to show how Mouffe’s radical democratic politics is actually just another form of the liberalism of Habermas and Rawls she positions her theory against. The essay then explores the potential digital media hold for making affirmative, affective, hyper-political interventions in specific contents and singular situations. In particular, it advocates using the wiki medium to experiment with new ways of organising institutions, cultures, communities and countries which do not uncritically repeat the reductive adherence to democracy, hegemony and Western, bourgeois, liberal humanism identified in Mouffe, but which can also be located in the institution of academic criticism more widely. -- Gary Hall Professor of Media and Performing Arts School of Art and Design, Coventry University Director of the Cultural Studies Open Access Archive http://www.culturemachine.net/csearch Co-founder of the Open Humanities Press http://www.openhumanitiespress.org My website http://www.garyhall.info New book: Digitize This Book! http://www.upress.umn.edu/Books/H/hall_digitize.html Pirate Philosophy - Steal This! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YkXDTQ7iFs

ABC requested an interview at the time, but to have granted it might have compromised the position of our Russian networking colleagues. The terrorists were probably following eye-witness tweets and Flickr photo streams during the Mumbai attacks. Larry

The Digital Revolution and the Church
by Mark Brown 28 Nov '08

28 Nov '08

I have written a paper entitled, 'The Digital Revolution and the Church', in which I outline the characteristics of the phenomenal internet driven digital revolution presently sweeping the globe. I particularly focus on how it is affecting human behavior, which offers some insights into how we as a church might need to respond. The opening paragraph reads, There is a revolution sweeping across the globe, driven by the massive growth of the internet and internet related technologies. Known as the Digital Revolution it is on par with other great global shifts such as the Agrarian Revolution and the Industrial Revolution. And it is completely changing the landscape of how we communicate, how we influence, how we relate. This isn’t simply about coming to grips with a new technology to assist us in our work, but requires of us a fundamental shift in our processes, our structures and approaches. If we don’t respond then as Eric Hoffer states, we will find ourselves, ‘beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists.’ To read the rest of the paper head to: http://brownblog.info/?page_id=409 I invite your thoughts.Rev Mark Brown CEO The Bible Society in New Zealand _________________________________________________________________ Time for change? Dear Philippa I would definitely suggest the wonderful work of Maria Bakardjieva. I have attempted (in my own feeble way) to re-deploy Anderson's rubric as a series of micro 'imaging communities' in the context of mobile media and Web 2.0 in the Asia-Pacific in my forthcoming book, Mobile Media in the Asia-Pacific (Routledge). Best Larissa >>> "Philippa Smith" <philippa.smith(a)aut.ac.nz> 28/11/08 12:59 PM >>> I'm seeking out references to Benedict Anderson's theory of "imagined communities" in relation to the Internet and how new technologies enable the construction of national identities. Certainly this is mentioned in Ananda Mitra's chapter "Virtual Commonality: Looking for India on the Internet" in Virtual Culture edited by Steven Jones and in S. Jones' chapter in the same book "The Internet and its Social Landscape. Mark Poster (1999) National Identities and Communications Technologies in The Information Society 15:4, 235-240 is another reference. But if there are any other references where people apply the theory in their research or discuss it please let me know. Many thanks. FYI: DERI, NUI Galway launches the boards.ie SIOC Data Competition
by Uldis Bojars 26 Nov '08

26 Nov '08

Hi, Please find attached information about a competition involving a large amount of online community data. Feel free to forward this message to others who may be interested in this competition. Uldis http://captsolo.net/ ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: John Breslin <john.breslin(a)deri.org> Date: Wed, Jul 30, 2008 at 4:52 PM Subject: DERI, NUI Galway launches the boards.ie SIOC Data Competition The Digital Enterprise Research Institute (DERI) at NUI Galway is running a unique competition from 1st August to 30th September 2008 in conjunction with boards.ie, Ireland's largest discussion forum site. The competition is an open contest in which entrants can win over €4000 in Amazon.com vouchers by submitting an interesting creation based on an RDF data set of discussion posts from boards.ie over the past ten years: * The first prize is an Amazon voucher for $4000 (~€2500) * The second prize is a voucher for $2000 (~€1250) * The third prize is a voucher for $1000 (~€625) Read the rules and find out more information on the contest at: http://data.sioc-project.org/ The data set (approximately 9 million documents) has been represented in the Semantically-Interlinked Online Communities (SIOC) RDF format developed by DERI, NUI Galway for expressing the information contained in social websites (forums, mailing lists, blogs, etc.). Entrants may create whatever they feel is interesting based on this data: it could be a novel web application that makes use of the data set, a report on analyses performed on the data, a tool that allows one to visualise or browse the semantic structure, or whatever else the imagination can come up with! The data reflects ten years of Irish online life, collected between 1998 and 2008 from boards.ie. boards.ie is one of Ireland's busiest websites, with over a million unique visitors a month. The most popular discussion areas are 'after hours', soccer, motors, poker, and computers. Popular topic threads include one about a virtual pub (over 4000 pages), member discussions (2800 pages), poker stories (1800 pages), Liverpool rumours (1250 pages), recruitment in the Gardaí (800 pages long), and a freebie list (250 pages). To enter the competition, go to http://data.sioc-project.org/ to access the data sets and view the guidelines. There will be three prizes for the top entries, as judged by an independent panel of three experts. The contest is open to anyone except current / former researchers with DERI and employees of boards.ie Ltd. One person may make multiple entry submissions. The closing date is the 30th September 2008. The purpose of this contest is to generate interesting applications or creations that make use of community data represented in the SIOC Semantic Web format. All rights to these creations will remain with the contest participants (not including the underlying data, whose copyright remains with the creators). Neither DERI nor boards.ie Ltd. will acquire any commercial rights to these applications or creations as submitted through this contest. Up until now, this data has been publicly viewable, but it was difficult to leverage it without any added semantics due to the fact that it was embedded in heavily-styled HTML pages. (DERI is a Centre for Science, Engineering and Technology (CSET) established at NUI Galway in 2003 with funding from Science Foundation Ireland (SFI). After five years of operation, DERI has become an internationally-recognised institute in Semantic Web research, education and technology transfer.) -- Dr. John Breslin DERI, NUI Galway http://www.johnbreslin.org/ john.breslin(a)deri.org
