Hello all, I need advice on the style of citations. I generally use only initials for first names in the name of gender equality. The idea being that the reader will judge the citation not by the gender of the author but by the quality of the work. I have recently been asked to change this format to include full given names. In addition to being a pain to look up all the names it seems to violate the gender equality idea. Is there a clear praxis here? Rich Ling ________________________________________

That’s why we're announcing our second summer for the Google Policy Fellowship Program—to support students and organizations working on policy issues fundamental to the future of the Internet and its users. Program Overview Fellows will have the opportunity to work at public interest organizations at the forefront of debates on broadband and access policy, content regulation, copyright and trademark reform, consumer privacy, open government, and more. Participating organizations are based in either Washington, DC, San Francisco, CA , Ottawa or Toronto, Canada and include: American Library Association, Cato Institute, Canadian Internet Policy and Public Interest Clinic, Center for Democracy and Technology, Citizen Lab, Competitive Enterprise Institute, Creative Commons, Electronic Frontier Foundation, Future of Music Coalition, Internet Education Foundation, Media Access Project, New America Foundation, Progress and Freedom Foundation, Public Knowledge, and Technology Policy Institute. More information about the host organizations and the areas of focus for the fellows are outlined here. Fellows will be assigned a lead mentor at their host organizations, but will have the opportunity to work with several senior staff members over the course of the summer. I recommend you to use the free download version of UCInet (http://www.analytictech.com/downloaduc6.htm) UCInet is easy to use and the functions are kind of intuitive if you have some network analysis background. Personality & YouTube Survey

Dear everyone, I'm currently doing a study on the role of personality in the use of YouTube. The survey does not ask for any personally identifiable information and has been approved by the social and developmental psychology ethics committee at Cambridge University. simple network analysis tool

Hi everyone, I have a small request for info. I've been looking at network analysis tools currently available online/for download and have found all of them rather cumbersome and far more sophisticated than myself. Rather than endeavouring to upgrade my brain to use them, I'm wondering if anybody knows a simple program that can turn simple data on a spreadsheet into a little diagram. I have a sample of only thirty to thirty-five bloggers, and want to show connections between the sites through links and comments. I have all the data on spreadsheet, and just want to show it pictorially. AoL Search Data Redux

With eye to nostalgia, I (re)raise the following question: are the data that were provided by the ill-fated AoL data release fair game for research? I could *really* use them for a current project; enough so that I will do the research. I may just never actually tell anyone about it. Which strikes me as somehow deeply wrong. For those new to the story, Eszter Hargittai tackled some of the issues here: http://crookedtimber.org/2006/08/07/the-aol-data-mess/ I did a bit here: http://alex.halavais.net/aol-data/ A piece by Nate Anderson appeared in Ars Technica: http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20060823-7578.html And there were about three dozen messages to AIR-L soon after the release. Now a couple of years have passed, and I have a part of research question that can be effectively answered through these data, and without these data (or similar), answering the question is prohibitively expensive and makes use of an approach less likely to yield valid information. Although the data was used, in part, during a presentation I saw in Copenhagen, I haven't seen any published articles making use of the released data, with the exception of articles that are related to detecting inferences in data, or the privacy concerns of search engines. My personal view is that this is widely publicly available data, and has already done its harm. My use of the data would yield no personally identifiable results. Given that my research does no harm to the subjects, I think a case may be made that it is therefore a reasonable target of investigation. Please tell me why I am wrong, and why my IRB will say I am wrong. Hello, IR9.0 attendees! I hope you all enjoyed Copenhagen as much as I did. As mentioned at the AGM, one part of the conference folks may not has as much fun with is our conference management system. We are currently in the process of evaluating various solutions for next year's conference, and hope to make a decision shortly.
