Thanks Matthias for the links! I agree that there are hundreds. I once tried to google and found many... Here is another series of US-based online deliberation practices. Prof. Vincent Price and Joseph Cappella have worked on this theme for almost a decade. Their first project, Electronic Dialogue 2000, was conducted in 2000. The link below is the website for their second project, Health Care Dialogue. I believe that there is a third project going on right now. http://healthcaredialogue.org/public/index.asp > > Weiyu Zhang, Ph.D. > Communication and New Media Programme > Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences > National University of Singapore > Block AS6, Level 3 > 11 Law Link, Singapore 117589 > Tel: (65) 6516 8156 Fax: (65) 6779 4911 > Email: cnmzw(a)nus.edu.sg > > ------------------------------ >> >> Message: 4 >> Date: Sun, 30 Nov 2008 02:10:49 +0100 >> From: " Matthias Tr?nel " <matthias.trenel(a)gmail.com> >> Subject: Re: [Air-L] deliberative democracy - good cases? >> To: air-l(a)listserv.aoir.org >> Message-ID: >> <96bfa0060811291710h6e551e0bu35a9ab004ad49356(a)mail.gmail.com> >> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 >> >> Dear Egle, >> there are hundreds... >> >> You may find what you're searching for on sites such as these ones: >> http://www.e-participation.net/ >> http://www.epractice.eu/ >> http://www.pep-net.eu/ >> http://www.demo-net.org/ >> >> Or at our own website: http://www.zebralog.de/en/ >> >> In my own research on online deliberation I have looked into detail at >> this >> case: >> http://dialogues.listeningtothecity.org/ >> >> Good luck, >> >> Matthias >> >> >> -- >> Matthias Tr?nel >> Zebralog - medien?bergreifende Dialoge >> >> Voltastr. 5, Aufzug 6 >> 13355 Berlin >> >> Telefon +49 30 6162 1906 >> http://www.zebralog.de >> >>

Making The Web Work For Science | Library of Congress | December 8, 2008 | 9:00am - 4:30pm
by McKiernan, Gerard [LIB] 01 Dec '08

01 Dec '08

Colleagues/ A Major Conference/Workshop That May Be Of Interest ... /Gerry Making the Web Work for Science: The Impact of e-Science and the Cyberinfrastructure A One-Day Workshop Co-sponsored by CENDI. NFAIS and FLICC Hosted by FLICC at the Library of Congress e-Science is used to describe computationally intensive science that is carried out in highly distributed network environments, or science that uses immense data sets that require grid computing; the term sometimes includes technologies that enable distributed collaboration." [Wikipedia] FLICC of the Library of Congress is pleased to host this meeting in the Library of Congress Mumford Room, 101 Independence Avenue, SE, Washington, DC, 20540. This timely and impactful workshop will take place on Monday, December 8, 2008, 9:00 am - 4:30 pm. E-Science and the Web will begin with an overview of the current landscape and how the Web is being utilized for the advancement of science and scholarly communication. Following this thoughtful, high-level perspective, real-life examples will be given of how major communities such as librarians, publishers, and federal STI program leaders are using the Web to advance scientific knowledge and scholarly communication. The Web has the potential to revolutionize the conduct of scientific research. Interactive communication, global collaboration, real-time data sharing and analysis of test results, and the shear speed with which new ideas can be widely distributed, verified, and built upon all hold much promise - not only for drug discovery, but also for the development of the sustainable energy and food alternatives essential to our world. But is the Information Community acting quickly enough in leveraging the Web's potential to accelerate scientific discovery? What is the current status? How are libraries and content providers utilizing the Web to provide state-of-the-art information products and services, and do these services really meet researchers' needs? What are the challenges to fulfilling the Web's full potential and how are they being met? And what does the future hold for scientific discovery if the full potential of the Web is truly realized? Join us on December 8th and learn the answers to these questions and more! Program Dr. Christine Borgman, author of Scholarship in the Digital Age: Information, Infrastructure, and the Internet, will provide a provocative keynote on the role that the Web currently plays in scientific research. Content providers Howard Ratner (Nature Publishing) and Dr. Walter Warnick (Department of Energy), along with Dr. G. Sayeed Choudhury (Johns Hopkins University), will discuss their organization's use of the Web in providing information products and services for researchers. Practicing scientists, Dr. Alberto Conti and Dr. Anthony Williams will provide their perspective on what still needs to be done to meet scientists' needs. Dr. Michael Nelson (IBM), Fred Haber (Copyright Clearance Center) and Dr. Michael Nielson (Perimeter Institute, Canada), will discuss the technological, legal, and cultural challenges to fulfilling the Web's potential for science. And the closing keynote, given by Dr. Chris Greer, recently of the National Science Foundation's Cyber-Infrastructure Office and, now, Networking and Information Technology Research and Development (NITRD) Director of the National Coordination Office, will discuss how the cyber-infrastructure will ultimately shape the advancement of science and scholarly communication I have listed the full agenda (with select links) on the Scholarship 2.0 blog at [ http://tinyurl.com/5ko9ve ] Enjoy! /Gerry Gerry McKiernan Associate Professor Science and Technology Librarian Iowa State University Library Ames IA 50011 gerrymck(a)iastate.edu There is Nothing More Powerful Than An Idea Whose Time Has Come / Victor Hugo [ http://www.blogger.com/profile/09093368136660604490 ] Iowa: Where the Tall Corn Flows and the (North)West Wind Blows [ http://alternativeenergyblogs.blogspot.com/ ]

Artifact Special Issue: Canonical writings on design
by Charlie Breindahl 01 Dec '08

01 Dec '08

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS Journal: Artifact Special Issue: Canonical writings on design Artifact, an international peer-reviewed academic journal dealing with design, plans a special issue for mid-2009 dedicated to canonical writings on design. Any search of the literature on design reveals a burgeoning field of writing that recurrently reformulates itself according to processes of economic, social and technological change. Within this flux of ideas, however, there are certain books that warrant acknowledgement as anchor points for any investigation into their respective area of design. The Artifact special issue on canonical writings in design welcomes articles on single books or groups of books that you consider have a significant and enduring place in the literature of design. Where some view canon formation as an expression of ideological control, the special issue seeks to stimulate debate concerning design's essential readings by exploring the authority of highly valued texts. Artifact encourages cross-fertilization, interconnections, and crossbreeding among different scientific disciplines, the design industry, and the arts. We seek reviews that reflect the broad field of design and show how a canonical design literature is open and expanding, as new issues and influences impact on the activity of design. The goal of the issue is to add to the design field's intellectual robustness, to establish principles for the ongoing critical evaluation of key texts and to ensure that important works are not neglected as a result of the ongoing cycle of publication. Alternatively, we recognize that the scope of a single journal issue means any attempt at canon- identification will be neither all-embracing nor definitive. The proposed books will thus shed light on the interplay of current and enduring concerns in design. Review essays should be no more than 3,500 words in length and are due 1 February 2009. We already have a number of books proposed for review, so please check to see whether your intended book is free for review by contacting the special issue editor: Carolyn Barnes, PhD Senior Lecturer, Senior Research Fellow Swinburne Design Swinburne University of Technology Melbourne, Australia cbarnes(a)swin.edu.au For information on Artifact please visit: http://www.informaworld.com/artifact

In recent years, it has become commonplace for users and organizations alike to engage in such collaborative information behavior. Collaboration may be quite direct when users seek, retrieve, and use information as part of a shared work activity (e.g. research and development project) or learning activity e.g. (collaborative group work); or more indirect as users draw for example on the automated recommendations generated by collaborative filtering and reputation systems. In the fields of information studies, information science, information systems, human-computer interaction, and computer-supported cooperative work, there is a need for an edited collection of articles in this area. Objective of the Book This book will aim to coordinate and integrate current research and practices in the area of collaborative information behavior. It will aim to provide information on empirical research findings, theoretical frameworks, and models relevant to understanding the following aspects: the range of contexts in which collaborative information behavior occurs; the range of approaches, qualitative and quantitative, currently being used to study collaborative information behavior; and the range of systems and practices that enable and constrain its occurrence. Target Audience The target audience of this book will be composed of professionals, educators, and researchers working in the fields of information studies, information science, information management, information retrieval, and knowledge management, human-computer interaction and computer-supported cooperative work. Practitioners who have role in organizational information, communication, and knowledge sharing will also find the publication of value in understanding and assessing the collaborative information behaviors that occur within their organizations. Imagined communities
by Philippa Smith 01 Dec '08

01 Dec '08

I'm seeking out references to Benedict Anderson's theory of "imagined communities" in relation to the Internet and how new technologies enable the construction of national identities. Certainly this is mentioned in Ananda Mitra's chapter "Virtual Commonality: Looking for India on the Internet" in Virtual Culture edited by Steven Jones and in S. Jones' chapter in the same book "The Internet and its Social Landscape. Mark Poster (1999) National Identities and Communications Technologies in The Information Society 15:4, 235-240 is another reference. But if there are any other references where people apply the theory in their research or discuss it please let me know. Many thanks. Imagined communities
by Mariana Goya 01 Dec '08

01 Dec '08

Sometimes, it is also useful to see how old technologies, such as magazines, have helped to develop a sense of community among its readers. For this, the classic book of Thomas & Znaniecki, "The Polish Peasant", shows the role of a Gazette as a communication channel among Polish immigrants and how it created a sense of community among them. This work is previous to Anderson's.
