Call for Contribution ===================== to the 4th Oekonux Conference in collaboration with P2P Foundation During the past decade the phenomenon of Free Software has become successful and well-known. It is still amazing how in the realm of software the creativity of so many volunteers leads to products which are useful for the whole mankind. In 1999 the Oekonux Project [http://www.oekonux.org/] started with analyzing this phenomenon and trying to understand the special features of Free Software as a social and political enterprise. Today, beyond the Free Software world, projects based on a similar approach of peer production are rapidly emerging, including Wikipedia and many more. It is time to look at peer production from a broader perspective. This is the goal of the 4th Oekonux conference [http://www.oekonux-conference.org/] which is done in collaboration with the P2P Foundation [http://p2pfoundation.net/] Under the title Free Software and Beyond The World of Peer Production we are planning a conference where o researchers and activists meet o intensive discussions are possible o experiences can be shared and learned. We are calling for contributions about the big world of peer production. Possible themes include (but not limited to): o Reports from peer production projects such as o Wikipedia o Blogosphere o Design communities o OpenAccess movement o Open Music o Free Culture o Sharing platforms like Flickr and YouTube o Free Software o Peer production and capitalism o Theoretical approaches on their relationship o Peer production and commercial interests o Peer production and the state o Peer production and political approaches of the past o Peer governance o Theoretical approaches to governance in peer production o Peer ownership o Maintainership and conflict resolution o Material peer production o Existing projects o Theoretical approaches If you want to o give a talk o prepare a workshop o moderate a round table discussion please submit a short outline of your idea (~300 words) together with a short bio to projekt AT oekonux DOT de. Please forward to anyone you think will be interested in attending. *CALL FOR PAPERS AND WORKS* On behalf of the scientific committee and Prof. Loss Glazier, President of the E-poetry Festival, I am glad to inform you about the 5th edition of the E-Poetry Festival, which will take place in *Barcelona in 2009 (May 24th-27th)* at the Universitat Obertat de Catalunya (UOC) hosted by the Hermeneia Research Group. E-Poetry is both a conference and a festival. The festival is the most significant digital literary gathering in the field. Authors and researchers worldwide meet and present their researches and works. This will permit researchers to present their latest research and artists to premier their newest works. A selection of the papers will be published after the conference following the peer review system and we will also like to publish proceedings of the conference. Artistic events will take place at key Barcelona venues such as the Barcelona Center for Contemporary Culture (CCCB: http://www.cccb.org/en/ <http://www.cccb.org/en/>), providing authors the opportunity to present their works to a public curious about new literary and artistic trends employing technology and communication during the Setmana de la Poesia, that is also sharing a part of our artistic program. *Katherine Hayles (Duke), Roberto Simanowski (Brown University) and Jean Clément (Université Paris 8) have already accepted to be key-note speakers.* The UOC's research group Hermeneia with the collaboration of Electronic Poetry Center (University of Buffalo) and the Laboratoire Paragraph (Univ. Presentations of papers should last no longer than 20 minutes and should be original. We provide information, based on a survey, showing how American households spend lots of time during the day connecting with each other by mobile phone and the Internet. No more does Daddy Ozzie go over to work, leaving Mommy Harriet at home and the kids at school -- all disconnected. However, we also find lots of traditional togetherness, on nights and weekends, with most families eating family meals together most nights. This is the latest Pew Internet study, "Networked Households". It's out today and available at www.pewinternet.org For the short version, you can read about it in the Washington Post, USA Today, AFP, and probably you can hear me on Monday Oct 20 doing an interview on "Future Tense" (NPR/US public radio). Sorry for eventual cross-posting. Due to popular demand the deadline has been extended for the Call for Papers for the Conference "The Good, the Bad and the Challenging. The user and the future of information and communication technologies". Copenhagen, May 13th to 15th, 2009. The new deadline for abstract submission: 31st October 2008. Contributions on a broad variety of social aspects of information and communication technologies (ICTs) are welcome. Abstracts should be posted via the conference website, where you will also find more informations on the the programme, the different strands and other details of the conference. For the abstracts submission, please visit http://conference2009.cost298.org/ The important dates for contributors are, at a glance: - Deadline for abstract submission: 31st October 2008 - Notification of the acceptance of abstracts: 1st December 2008 - Deadline for authors´ delivery of paper in order to be included inthe printed programme and the proceedings: 1st February 2009 - Conference : 13th-15th May 2009 All papers will be published in CD-ROM and printed proceedings volumes. A selection of papers will be considered for a series of books. The abstracts can cover a range of contributions such as empirical studies, literature reviews, theoretical discussions, etc. But in all cases authors should provide background information relating to the topic, the actual question being addressed, methodology if appropriate and indicate main findings, arguments or conclusions. All abstracts should be prepared in electronic form. Abstracts must be written in English and typed with single line spacing. No formulas, symbols, mathematical notation or sub/superscripts are allowed. Abstracts should be 300-600 words. No abstract fee is required. Authors are required indicate in which strand the paper would most appropriately fit and make use of the template for the abstract that will be available online. Both academics and practitioners are invited to submit presentations. Given the interdisciplinary nature of the conference, abstracts will be reviewed by a combination of members of the Steering Committee, the International Programme Committee and others with relevant expertise. Notification of acceptance will be given by 1st December 2009. All withdrawals should be sent to the Conference Chair. About COST 298: COST 298 is an Action in the domain `Information and Communication Technologies´ of COST, an intergovernmental framework for European Co-operation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research. In COST 298 European scientists from telecommunication research departments, universities and operators together with independent consultants collaborate in cross-disciplinary groups to analyse the social dimensions of people´s relationships to information and communication technologies. The Actions have produced a range of articles reports such as Communications on the Move: The Experience of mobile Telephony in the 1990s (1997) and the books Everyday Innovators, Researching the Role of Users in Shaping ICTs (2005) and The Social Dynamics of Information and Communication Technology (2008) based on previous conferences.
