In association with the upcoming A2K3 conference in September -- online registration now open <http://www.regonline.com/Checkin.asp?EventId=603819>-- I'd like to draw attention to the A2K3 writing competition and Kaltura Prize. We've just extended the deadline until *July 24, 2008*. Please help us reach authors that would benefit from this opportunity to promote their work -- and advance research and awareness of Access to Knowledge issues -- by forwarding this announcement widely. The competition is open to all scholars, policy-makers, technologists, activists, and industry representatives, as well as advanced students; with a particular focus on *communication law and policy*. The author of the best paper on *digital media remix, open-source business models, collaborative production, democratic culture*, or a related theme will be awarded the Kaltura Prize; which includes an all-expenses-paid trip to the A2K3 conference in Geneva, as well as a cash award. I am interested in technology and age difference but this book that helped spur my interest did not help much. I would like to add age and technology attitudes to my thesis simulation so any sharing welcome. Blog entry Sunday, June 08, 2008 Interesting but not very complex reading and could be considered ageist in its failings. I am reading this book right now amongst others. Salkowitz, Rob. Generation Blend: Managing Across the Technology Age Gap (Hoboken, N.J.: John Wiley & Sons, 2008) While this book is interesting and covers a vast array technological areas it falls short of having any details. The reason it fails is that it only assumes youth are better and more comfortable with technology and such things as web 2.0 and does not hold back from this view. Again and again the old are considered technological deficient and the youth technologically gifted. So no matter what technology or workplace practice the author examines he does not change from this perspective. This could have been a much more interesting book with much more results. I would suggest the author embark on empirical studies to back up his points. This is book is signed off on by Microsoft which is mud on their fenders in my opinion.

CNGL conducts research on language technologies (machine translation, speech recognition/synthesis), digital content management technologies (adaptive hypermedia, IE/IR), their application in localisation workflows, and language technology-focused software engineering. CNGL is a €30M collaborative research centre that involves collaboration between DCU, TCD, UCD, UL and industrial partners who include world leaders in their respective fields. Invent DCU is the commercialisation gateway for Dublin City University (DCU). Invent manages the protection and commercialisation of intellectual property for DCU through technology transfer, licensing and the creation of spin-out companies. We wish to recruit an Intellectual Property Manager on a fixed term contract basis with primary responsibility for managing the intellectual property generated in the Centre for Next Generation Localisation (CNGL). Duties and Responsibilities: The IP Manager will report to the CEO of Invent. He/she will have primary responsibility for the identification, capture, protection and commercialisation of intellectual property arising from research activities within the CNGL and related interdisciplinary research areas involving computer science. He/she will also work with other Invent staff and CNGL partners to develop the full potential of IP through appropriate commercial and licensing mechanisms in accordance with the formal IP arrangements agreed between the partners. Requirements: The IP Manager is a key post within Invent and CNGL and the successful candidate will be expected to have the required breadth of education, relevant experience and self confidence to have an immediate impact in a leading computer science research centre by devising and implementing procedures and practices that enhance the identification, assessment and protection of intellectual property.
