odd query?

Hi all, a colleague who is responsible for sustainability initiatives on our campus has asked me if I knew anything about the following: a careful, quantitatively oriented analysis of the comparative costs - both direct (e.g., consumption of electricity, toner, etc.) and indirect (costs of manufacturing and distributing paper, computers, monitors, etc.) - of a) paper-based techniques in teaching and learning - e.g., 5-page lab reports in a composition book turned in weekly, to be read, hand-marked by the instructor, and then returned to the students, vis-à-vis b) comparable (at least roughly) paperless techniques - e.g., written work produced and turned in electronically, graded and commented electronically, and then returned to the students electronically? I know that the advent of the paperless office has been heralded for at least three, going on four decades, coupled with the proclamation of the imminent death of the book, etc. - and that for many good reasons (besides, in my case, sheer curmudgeonly Ludditism), paper and books retain their unique places and roles in learning (and elsewhere). So I, for one, would argue strenuously for the ongoing importance of what Naomi Baron so nicely encapsulates in her recent book _Always On: Language in an Online and Mobile World_ (Oxford U.P.) under the heading of written culture (thanks, Naomi!), even if paper and books might be comparatively more expensive from a material and environmental standpoint. But however one views these matters pedagogically, etc. - the question is a good one: does anyone know what the comparative costs really are? Many thanks in advance for any pointers listmembers can provide! - charles ess PS: I'm using ch. 9, "Gresham's Ghost: Challenges to a Written Culture" in my Freshman class to introduce them to my arcane insistence on their developing their own commonplace book - and thereby as an introit to further work in Plato's Phaedrus as a way of helping us develop a framework for thinking through the relationships between our technologies of communication and our conceptions of our selves, our relationships to larger communities, etc. I recommend the chapter - and the book at large - heartily! - c.

Gary Gumpert Research Incentive Prize

Gary Gumpert Research Incentive Prize Two grants up to $1500 will be awarded to fund communication research relevant to enhancing understanding or improving the urban communication environment. The incentive award can be applied to the acquisition of resources, travel, and/or any other appropriate research related expenses. The UCF Research Incentive is open to all National Communication Association members. The proposals will be judged for both originality and potential impact of the completed study in heightening the understanding of issues, problems and policies in the urban/suburban landscape. Applications should include a statement in no more than two pages describing the nature and significance of the project in relatively non-technical terms; anticipated schedule (expected completion time); plans for dissemination of the project results, and budget. You may wish to include an additional 2-page appendix for bibliography, photos, figures, etc. Applications should be sent to Dr. John Monberg and should be accompanied by a CV. The award recipient will be obligated to complete the research and provide the UCF with a report of research and progress results. The deadline for proposals is October 1 of each year. The award will be presented in November at the annual meeting of the National Communication Association. Material can be submitted by email when appropriate. Gender & Technology Videos

I'm teaching a new course this semester on gender & technology, and it's a general education course (or "Block II" -- social science -- here at the U of Tulsa), so the students are mostly first and second year students. I'll be gone for a week in October for AoIR, and I'm wondering if there are any good videos/DVDs that I could schedule for them to watch that week. The topic that week is transportation technology (men, women, and automobiles, with readings from the Scharff book), but that doesn't matter too much. I'm interested in anything that's good. The course looks primarily at home, office, and communication technologies, with the last part of the course devoted to new information and communication technologies. In the internet communication course that I teach, I use Stephanie Tuszynski "IRL," so I don't also want to use it in this class. Thanks in advance for any ideas! Announcing an Opening at Texas A&M University--Department of Communication in Telecommunication Media Studies The Department of Communication at Texas A&M University, College Station, TX, invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor in Telecommunication Media Studies, starting fall 2009. We are seeking an individual with expertise in international communication, global media, or comparative media systems. Internationalization is a priority and the Department has new initiatives in China and the Asian Pacific region and programs and partnerships in Mexico, South America, Europe, and the Middle East. Topics of interest include communication technologies, cultural studies, feminist theory and criticism, diaspora and immigrant media, race and ethnicity, telecommunication, television studies, political communication, law and policy, or other areas of media studies.
