Metaphors in Technology

Hi All, I am working on a project dealing with the use of metaphor in communication about technology, as well as communication within software. I am trying to compile a list of metaphors used on the web and in computer software. For example, the "shopping cart" in online shopping, PowerPoint using "slides", "dialog" boxes in operating systems, "bulletin boards", etc. Have any of you come across or perhaps even thought of other metaphors employed in software, online or off, or in communication about technology? I would like to make a giant list of examples. Also, any recommended readings would be greatly appreciated. Sue - absolutely. Of course, the very act of labeling someone a "nerd" or a "geek" carries connotations that are heavily identified with gender or the performance of it (calling a guy a "nerd" implies he's physically weak, wears glasses and a pocket protector, etc.) to begin with. But articles like that one just reinforce the underlying problems. Over the last half-century, the region has undergone innumerable far-reaching changes. It has witnessed the rise of postcolonial nation-states, rapid industrialization, economic growth and democratization but also genocide, political upheaval and widespread repression. Power lies at the core of these important developments, whether in the form of brute military force or as a more capillary 'disciplinary' influence on religious and political subjectivities. New religious, economic and political movements—all drawing deeply on local traditions while proposing new forms of personhood, civil and political society—cut across national, cultural, ideological and sectarian boundaries. Yet for all that power can be detected in Southeast Asia, there seems to be little specifically Southeast Asian about it contemporary scholarly analyses. This is both puzzling and ironic given the central role that earlier ethnographic studies of Southeast Asia once played in identifying distinctively regional modalities of power, prompting us to reconsider how 'power' could be most profitably studied in Southeast Asian contexts. 'Continuity and Change' will be a major interdisciplinary and international conference on Southeast Asia. Its key aim is to reopen the debate on the issue of 'power'—both in real life and academic scholarship—as it is manifest across the region. Conference themes and questions will include: • Are there, or were there ever, distinctly 'Southeast Asian' notions of power that could still exist as alternatives—or complements—to Western folk and political models? • Are scholars' analytic imaginaries of power in relation to nationhood and governance congruent with the imaginaries of Southeast Asians witnessing or involved in such projects and processes? • What are the shapes that power takes? • How have recent theoretical developments within various disciplines reshaped our understanding of the nature and location of power? • How useful is the concept of 'Southeast Asia' as a geographical, political and analytical entity in dealing with these issues? Dear AOIR, ICT Guides is a service offered by the Centre for eResearch at King's College in London (CeRch). It seeks to promote the use of ICTs in research and learning through cataloging digital arts and humanities projects along with the tools and methods they employed. A number of new projects have been added to ICT Guides: Highlight: The Body and the Mask in Ancient Theatre Space "The project applies advanced 3 dimensional technologies to study the practice of ancient mask theatre. It produces 3D scans of Greek and Roman mask miniatures relating both to comedy and tragedy, and reproduces them at life-size by rapid prototyping. The project use 3D motion capture as well as ChromaKey technologies to record experimentation with these masks practitioners of Asiatic and European traditions, and situates the results in 3D modelled reserarch based ancient theatre spaces". I had a feeling that godawful Newsweek article was going to come up. Because it's only okay for women to be geeks/nerds/"fill in intellectual stereotype here" as long as they "sex it up" enough? grr. For all of you giving presentations at the forthcoming conference in Copenhagen can I offer the following guidance in response some questions: Registration: Please register as soon as possible for the conference so that I can include you in the programme. When you have done this can you also take some time to amend your abstract, title and biog details for inclusion in the Conference Brochure. These should be a short abstract of no more than 250 words and a very short biog of about Two sentences. Panels and Rountables should have an abstract of no more than 300 words and include a list of participating authors and titles for panels. Papers: The deadline for submission of papers is now 31st August. There are no papers for Rountables. There is no single format style which reflects the variety of disciplines covered by the proposals. They should however be no more than 7,000 words in length and no less than 2,500. Presentations: Each paper will receive 15 minutes for presentation and time at the end of the session for questions. Couch Internet Research Award. The Couch Award is presented annually and recognizes excellent student-authored papers. Richie Neil Hao, a doctoral student in Department of Speech Communication, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, is the First Place winner for his paper, "Virtually Tsinoy: Performing and Negotiating Diasporic Hybridity Online." Angela Adkins, doctoral degree candidate in the Department of Sociology at the University of Akron, Akron, Ohio is the Second Place winner for her paper, "The Presentation of Self in Internet Forums: Face Work without Being Face-to-Face." A tie for Third Place means that there will be two award winners in this category. They are Sara Hebert, a master's degree candidate in Digital Media Studies at the University of Denver, for her paper, "Your World, Your Imagination?: Representation and Social Expectations in Virtual Memorials;" and Vilma Lehtinen, a student in the Department of Social Psychology, University of Helsinki, Finland, for her paper, "Performing Diverse Social Relationships on a Social Networking Site." The Couch Center established the Couch Award in 2002 as the centerpiece of an extensive awards program. Winning papers apply symbolic interactionist approaches to internet studies as advocated by the late Dr. Carl J. Couch, long-time professor of sociology at the University of Iowa. Competition is open to graduate or undergraduate students of all disciplines, and winners are selected by a committee of university professors in communication studies and sociology from across the U.S. This year's competition was rigorous, with entries received from students of all levels, from undergraduates through Ph.D. candidates, and were submitted by students from Europe, Asia, and Australia, as well as North America. Winners receive a cash award as well as the opportunity to present their papers at a national or international conference. This year's awards will be presented at the annual conference of the Association of Internet Researchers in Copenhagen, Denmark, October 15-18.
