However, this approach to sensitive information has proved inadequate for the kinds of activities now taking place on the Internet. There are growing concerns over the amount of information being collected by data brokers, as well as concerns about the ability of merchants, banks, and the large data brokers themselves to secure that information from malicious use. The problem is compounded by the fact that there are multiple stakeholders---such as data subjects, data owners, data collectors, and data service providers---and these stakeholders may have differing views about which uses are appropriate and which are not. A number of steps towards solutions have been proposed, including various mechanisms for balancing privacy and accountability, privacy- preserving data mining, privacy enforcement, and privacy policy languages and frameworks. Working towards a complete solution to this problem, this workshop will address technical issues, such as the application of cryptography to allow selected uses and disallow others; mechanisms for policy enforcement and policy reconciliation in a decentralized, distributed setting; and the massive scale of modern databases. It will also to address social, philosophical, and legal issues to determine which kinds of controls should be considered appropriate, how technology and public policy can interact to achieve privacy goals, and when and how law enforcement or domestic security needs affect the architecture requirements for deployed networks and database systems. We are soliciting contributed talks. Please see the call for papers. Workshop topics include (but are not limited to): * Controlled data movement (e.g. Digital Rights Management) * Privacy on the web: attacks and defenses * Search query privacy * Enforcing privacy policies at enterprise and government systems ******************************************************************** Call for Participation: This two day multidisciplinary workshop will include a combination of invited and contributed talks. We are soliciting short abstract submissions (about 500 words) to be considered for a 30 minute presentation at the workshop. We welcome submissions from scholars and researchers in all relevant fields, including computer and information sciences, social sciences, humanities, and law. Since there will be no published proceedings we welcome submissions covering material that was previously presented elsewhere (and referenced as such). nerd culture and new media

Does anyone know of any recent research about how new media relates to nerd culture stereotypes? There are a large number of very recent books and news articles about this topic, and some claim that being nerdy is going mainstream. Presumably they mean it's not necessarily defined by computers and A/V and pocket protectors anymore, but video games and MMORPG's and MySpacers and other activities that may break the traditional white male nerd stereotype. Computer science is still as nerdy as ever, a perceived by kids, but do we know if new media studies or cultural studies indicates different trends in other areas? Speculation welcome, even if you don't know of any research being done on it. Call for Contribution ===================== to the 4th Oekonux Conference in collaboration with P2P Foundation During the past decade the phenomenon of Free Software has become successful and well-known. It is still amazing how in the realm of software the creativity of so many volunteers leads to products which are useful for the whole mankind. In 1999 the Oekonux Project [http://www.oekonux.org/] started with analyzing this phenomenon and trying to understand the special features of Free Software as a social and political enterprise. Today, beyond the Free Software world, projects based on a similar approach of peer production are rapidly emerging, including Wikipedia and many more. It is time to look at peer production from a broader perspective. This is the goal of the 4th Oekonux conference [http://www.oekonux-conference.org/] which is done in collaboration with the P2P Foundation [http://p2pfoundation.net/] Under the title Free Software and Beyond The World of Peer Production we are planning a conference where o researchers and activists meet o intensive discussions are possible o experiences can be shared and learned. Examples of suitable paper topics include: - Field studies of intercultural collaboration in global organizations or in local communities - Laboratory studies of intercultural collaboration - Survey studies of cultural differences in collaboration styles - Case studies of intercultural collaboration using information technologies - Cultural responses to cross-cultural interaction - Computer supported intercultural collaboration - Ubiquitous/ambient technologies for intercultural collaboration - Internet and web technologies for intercultural collaboration - Frameworks for manual or automatic measurement of properties of intercultural communication - Multilingual communication technologies - Interoperability of language resources - Usability of language resources for intercultural collaboration - New methods or measures for the study of intercultural collaboration All papers are expected to be suitable for a multidisciplinary audience and focus on issues of intercultural collaboration. Full papers should be no longer than 10 pages. Papers should be formatted according to the ACM SIGCHI template and submitted in PDF format. Please see the SIGCHI author instruction page (http://sigchi.org/chipubform/) for more information and downloadable templates. Papers should be submitted through the Precision Conference System (www.precisionconference.com/~iwic) Authors will need to create a free account and then upload a pdf version of their anonymized paper to the site. All full papers will be evaluated using a double-blind review process. Authors should omit their names and affiliations from the title area of the paper and conceal references to their own prior work by referring to it in the third person (e.g., authors should say "In an earlier study, Jones and Smith found ..." instead of "In an earlier study, we found ..."). Papers that have not been appropriately anonymized will be returned without review. Panels, Demonstrations and Posters IWIC will also feature three categories of nonarchival submissions: Panels, demonstrations and posters. Submissions for these categories should be no longer than 3 pages in length using the ACM template (see above). Unlike paper submissions, panels, demonstrations and posters will not be blind reviewed. Authors should include their complete names and contact information at the top of their submitted PDF file. Panels: Individuals may submit proposals for panels of three or four talks on a related theme in intercultural communication. Panel submissions will not be archival, so panelists may discuss previously published work. Submissions should provide each panelist's background and contact information, as well as a brief statement of his or her position on the panel theme. Panels should be submitted by email to iwic2009-panels(a)khn.nict.go.jp. Demonstrations: Individuals may submit proposals to present demonstrations of new technologies for intercultural communication. Demonstration proposals should clearly describe the motivation for the tool and how it will be demonstrated at the workshop. Demonstration descriptions will not be archival; therefore, demonstrations can include both previously published work and work that is not yet ready for publication. Demonstrations should be submitted by email to iwic2009-demos(a)khn.nict.go.jp. Posters: Individuals may submit proposals to present informal posters during the workshop. Poster descriptions will not be archival; therefore, posters can describe both previously published work and work that is not yet ready for publication.
