Dear All, apologies for cross-posting. Webology: Call for Papers (a Special Issue), Folksonomies, the Web and Search Engines Background and Significance: Folksonomy is a user-generated system that allows users to tag their favorite web resources with their chosen natural-language words or phrases. These tags can be used to classify web resources and to express users' preferences. Folksonomy may be generated and shared collaboratively by the creators and consumers of web content. Contributions to this Special Issue (Volume 5, Number 3) should address Folksonomies, Taxonomies, Knowledge Organizartion, the Web and Search Engines. Papers are solicited on, but not limited to, the following topics: - Folksonomies - Taxonomies - Search engines - Information retrieval - Social bookmarking - Social tagging - Social classification - Social softwares - Social networks - Social indexing - Collaborative tagging - Controlled vocabulary - Knowledge organization - Knowledge management - The role of the folksonomy in information retrieval The topics above are not a comprehensive list of all possible topics for this Special Issue. Submissions to this Special Issue should address the topics above (as well as other related topics). Submissions: Submissions should follow the Author Guidelines of Webology avilable at: http://www.webology.ir/guidelines.html . All Submissions will be acknowledged and then refereed by at least 2 reviewers. Authors should indicate that the submission is intended for the Special Issue on Folksonomies, the Web and Search Engines, in the accompanying cover letter. All submissions must be in English, and should represent the original work of the authors. Improved versions of papers previously published in conference proceedings are welcome, provided that no copyright limitations exist. Viral email dissemination as a sociological research methodology - some questions

Hi there. I'm quite new to this listserv and have never posted, but I've been quietly imbibing posts for a couple of weeks, and I'd now like to stick my head out and ask a few questions... I'm currently analysing the results from a small (pilot) online research project I have conducted, and to date, I have not been able to locate anyone within the field of sociology in particular who is using similar online methodologies. I'm wondering if there's any of you out there who can point me in the right (or any!) direction... Broadly, I have utilised viral or community email dissemination to recruit research participants, and in doing so have tried to go some way to addressing issues of researcher/researched power relations (in theory!) by relying on participant-led take-up. I have created a survey via Survey Monkey and have placed the link in an email that I have sent to all those within my social network. I have then asked individuals to pass on the email (viral or community marketing-style) within their social networks (and beyond if possible). Within the survey participants are asked if they would like to participate in a further stage of the study which requires them to supply an image pertaining to a question posed in the survey. Take-up of this second stage, is of course, once again, entirely optional and participant-led. Forgive me all you scholarly techies out there - I am very new to internet research, and really no expert at all on internet technologies, so you may find my explication below lacking in net-savvy understanding or terminology. I am first and foremost a sociologist who is interested in employing internet technologies as a methodology for qualitative sociological research. Within this pilot early analysis shows the methodology has been reasonably successful with around 70% of survey take-up *not* originating from emails that I originally disseminated. Nonetheless it definitely has its drawbacks - one major one being that there is no way (that I'm aware of, and by reading your posts over the last few weeks I believe it is a drawback of online research in general - although perhaps something that many of you are working to change) of measuring the overall success, or failure, of the research in terms of who *does not* respond (ie who the project reaches but does not appeal to). One is only aware of the methodological success rate because of the impossibility of tracing unsuccessful dissemination *beyond* one's original mail-out. Anyway, I really just wanted to know if any of you were aware of studies (published or unpublished) outside the realm of marketing where this type of online methodology is being employed...? I'd love to find some sociologists experimenting with this methodology, but failing that, any research utilising viral dissemination methodologies would be of interest! Hi all, Please feel free to circulate to interested parties: ******************************************************** Request for Proposals The Association of Internet Researchers (AoIR) invites proposals from individuals and institutions interested in serving as the host site for Internet Research 10.0, the AoIR annual conference for 2009, for Internet Research 11.0, the AoIR annual conference for 2010, and for Internet Research 12.0, the AoIR annual conference for 2011. The AoIR Internet Research conferences are among the most important venues for bringing together current research and reflection from a wide range of disciplines and perspectives - with a marked accent on interdisciplinary approaches - on the multiple social and technological practices that depend upon and shape the Internet. In particular, IR 10.0 will mark the 10th anniversary of AoIR. We look forward to an intellectually stimulating conference, and one that, in keeping with the distinctive spirit and hospitality of AoIR, will also be a heck of a good time (Previous conference cities: Lawrence, Kansas (2000); Minneapolis, Minnesota (2001); Maastricht, the Netherlands (2002); Toronto, Canada (2003); Brighton, U.K. (2004); Chicago, Illinois (2005); Brisbane, Australia (2006); Vancouver, Canada (2007) - and upcoming: Copenhagen, Denmark (2008)). We ask interested colleagues to review the following general proposal requirements. Colleagues and institutions who would like to pursue developing a proposal are encouraged to contact Mia Consalvo ( consalvo(a)ohio.edu) and/or Charles Ess (cmess(a)drury.edu) to indicate your interest and raise any immediate questions, etc., that you may wish to discuss. We will also be happy to send you a far more detailed Conference Planning Guide for your review and use. We would ask that a proposal address the following elements: DATES. AoIR conferences typically take place in early-to-mid-October – but depending only local calendars and requirements, we can be somewhat flexible regarding conference timing (i.e., from late September to late October). The AoIR conference typically runs over four days, beginning with 1) an initial day for pre-conference workshops and possible excursions. 2) the program proper, which runs over 3 days. Each day has 6 programmed sessions which require space. Of the 6 each day, three are sessions for papers, panels and roundtables, which require 8 parallel rooms. The remaining three include times for keynote presentations, the AoIR general meeting, Birds of a Feather sessions, etc. (The IR 8.0 / 2007 Program may be downloaded for review: <http://www.sfu.ca/~smith/AOIR-Program-OCT16.pdf>) LOCATION / TRAVEL / VENUE. AoIR members and conference participants are a diverse, international community: conference venues should be easily accessible from international travel hubs. Travel possibilities from international arrival points to accommodations (see below) and conference venue should be convenient and inexpensive. AoIR conferences typically attract 250-400 participants. Hence, there is need for one large auditorium that can comfortably hold ca. 300 people (or more), plus at least 6 smaller rooms for parallel sessions - as well as for requisite infrastructure (AV, wireless, computers and data projectors, etc.) (These may be at a host University and/or in the area (e.g., conference centers, a hotel, etc.) for the conference itself.) ECOLOGY / SUSTAINABILITY We encourage proposals that take into account the ecological impacts of conference arrangements (e.g., preferences for sustainable choices re. conference materials, catering arrangements, distances and travel possibilities, etc.) BUDGET - a _rough_ estimate of local costs, using the outline provided in the planning document sent out upon request. An economically viable conference will also require some level of local / regional / national sponsorships. Suggestions regarding e.g., possible grants, in-kind contributions, potential corporate sponsors, etc. would be helpful. ACCOMMODATIONS and related infrastructure. This should include information about a proposed conference hotel, whether or not it will serve as a conference venue (e.g., in Vancouver, we did _not_ use a hotel as the venue) - as well as information about alternative possibilities, including modest to low-cost possibilities, so far as these are available. CATERING - coffee/tea breaks + conference banquet LOCAL ORGANIZING COMMITTEE: the Committee and its Chair are responsible for these and other important details (e.g., local registration process, accounting and documenting expenses and credits in the conference budget, etc.) and ensuring that "everything is in place" prior to and through the conference itself. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION - anything else that you think will enhance the conference experience. For example, host venues commonly organize one or more "getaways" that make local highlights easily accessible to conference participants. FOR OUR PART - AoIR will provide a great deal of assistance and direction, including registration and collection of conference fees through the AoIR website; recruiting a Program Chair who will take primary responsibility for soliciting papers and reviewers, oversee the reviewing and notification process, etc. (Organizationally, the Local Organizing Committee works with the Program Chair and AoIR Vice-President and President, who serve as liaisons with the AoIR Executive Committee.) Digital humanities and digital art fellowship positions at HUMlab in Sweden

Two postdoctoral positions in the digital humanities and two fellowship positions in digital art are now available at HUMlab, Umeå University, Sweden from August 1, 2008 (the actual start date may be later). The postdoctoral fellowships are one-year positions, with a possible extension of one year. The digital art fellowships are one-year positions. For the postdoc positions, applicants will be expected to have a Ph.D. in a humanities discipline (from a non-Swedish university) and a specialty in any of the following five research areas: participatory media, digital cultural heritage, digital art/architecture, electronic literature, and critical perspectives. For the digital art fellowships, applicants will be expected to have an M.F.A or the equivalent (from a non-Swedish institute/school). In exceptional cases, other areas and backgrounds can be of interest as well.
