DUE JUNE 1, 2008 -------------------------------------------- Call for short papers for a forum in the graduate student journal Rocky Mountain Communication Review. **FACULTY: PLEASE spread this forum call--and news about RMCR in general--to your graduate students!** Forum: "New Media, New Relations" Rocky Mountain Communication Review Guest forum editor: Daren C. Brabham, University of Utah (daren.brabham(a)utah.edu) Rocky Mountain Communication Review (RMCR) seeks short papers (approximately 1500 words) that address the ways in which new media technologies are changing how we work, solve problems, make friends, tell stories, and make progress in our world. The focus of this forum is on the role new media play in re-structuring, re-making, and re-imagining our world. In other words, how exactly have new media changed our world? What are the implications for these changes? What are the most pressing questions and agendas for research regarding these changes? For the purposes of this forum, new media include both digital mass communication technologies (e.g., the Web) as well as personal digital media (e.g., cell phones, digital music players). Submissions can be empirical, rhetorical, or theoretical. Possible topics may include: * how new media are changing the nature of specific industries and professions (e.g., journalism, stock photography); * how social networking sites are changing the ways we make friends, fall in love, and make professional connections; * how personal digital media script our daily rituals and needs; * how new media enable democratic participation; * how new media change/challenge aspects of our identities (e.g., along lines of race, class, gender, sexuality, (dis)ability, nationality); * how new media technologies enhance, fragment, or otherwise change the way we tell stories and entertain; * how new media technologies change the ways we teach and learn; and * how new media technologies affect social movements and activism. RMCR is a peer-reviewed, online communication journal by and for graduate students, published by the University of Utah. Authors MUST be currently enrolled in a graduate program to be eligible for publication in the journal. All submissions undergo blind, peer-review by at least two graduate students. RMCR is an up-and-coming journal in its fourth volume, and the journal was recently added to the EBSCO database. Colleagues/ Academics: Big Virtual World TrailBlazers /Gerry Chronicle of Higher Education May 8, 2008 Co-Founder of Second Life Says Academics Are Biggest Trailblazers in Virtual Worlds Cory Ondrejka, the co-founder of the virtual world Second Life who is now a visiting professor at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California, said in a speech today that virtual worlds are here to stay, and that professors are among the most active pioneers. I view the academy as having been the blazing trail of adoption of virtual worlds far more than gamers or industry, said Mr. Ondrejka, who spoke at a conference at Case Western Reserve University called Collaboration Technology and Engaging the Campus 2008. I attended the conference virtually, and was able to ask Mr. Ondrejka what the biggest challenge for Second Life was in being able to be more than just a passing fad in higher education. [snip] Mr. Ondrejka said that when professors first build a virtual campus, they usually try to exactly replicate a classroom in Second Life, with desks, chairs, and walls. But then they realize that the world allows different kinds of movement and communication than the real world. You realize that in a world where you can fly, classrooms arent really that useful, he said. So professors have built new kinds of classrooms online with no roofs. Value of participation in online spaces toward tenure promotions

I am seeking resources about the value judgments that are being made by higher education administrators toward faculty participation in online spaces as opposed to other traditional venues. The request for information comes out of an ongoing conversation with members of an online community of practice. This CoP was formerly enabled by the listserve technology. The person who started the listserve was a faculty member at Penn State. The listserve was also administered at Penn State. The CoP is now a YAHOO group after the faculty member made the decision to relinquish control to others. Concerns have recently been raised about the vitality of the group. Some of the "old timers" are bringing historical information into the discussion, including issues related to changes in member composition. I mentioned that the composition of members possibly changed because of the value that some university administrators place on faculty spending time/sharing information with others in online spaces that are not affiliated with a university, research foundation, professional association, or other identifiable entity. I seem to recall there was a conversation or two in the past that explored this and other closely related issues but not able to locate them in the archives. UK studentship award: the internet and the archive

Arts and Humanties Research Council collaborative doctoral award: the internet and the archive School of Education, University of Edinburgh, UK Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS), UK This studentship, fully funded by the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council, with additional funding from the collaborating partner, will support three years of full-time study. The student will investigate how the internet is changing the way users engage with, and learn from, the collections of cultural institutions, with supervision provided by Dr Sian Bayne (University of Edinburgh) and Ms Rebecca Bailey (RCAHMS). Basing the study on the online education and outreach activities of RCAHMS, the broad remit of the project is to explore how new online media environments change and challenge the curatorial and outreach responsibilities of museums, galleries and archives. The studentship covers all UK fees, and includes an allowance of £12,940 per academic year, plus an additional annual £1,500 maintenance payment provided by the AHRC and RCAHMS. Students may also be eligible for UK study visits and one overseas study visit as well as one overseas conference for the duration of the award.
