Hi Folks, I'm researching how differences in design across social networking websites affect users' privacy decisions (what information to disclose and to who), and could use some help finding the relevant literature. In particular, do any of you know of works that address differences in social networking design across sites (as a research variable or otherwise) or that discuss the various decisions and considerations that go into designing a social networking site? New book on mbile communication

It is entitled New Tech, New Ties: How Mobile Communication Is Reshaping Social Cohesion http://www.amazon.com/New-Tech-Ties-Communication-Reshaping/dp/026212297 9/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1205006909&sr=1-1 The PR blurb on the back of the book reads: The message of this book is simple: the mobile phone strengthens social bonds among family and friends. With a traditional land-line telephone, we place calls to a location and ask hopefully if someone is "there"; with a mobile phone, we have instant and perpetual access to friends and family regardless of where they are. But when we are engaged in these intimate conversations with absent friends, what happens to our relationship with the people who are actually in the same room with us? In New Tech, New Ties, Rich Ling examines how the mobile telephone affects both kinds of interactions--those mediated by mobile communication and those that are face to face. Ling finds that through the use of various social rituals the mobile telephone strengthens social ties within the circle of friends and family--sometimes at the expense of interaction with those who are physically present--and creates what he calls "bounded solidarity." Ling argues that mobile communication helps to engender and develop social cohesion within the family and the peer group. Drawing on the work of Emile Durkheim, Erving Goffman, and Randall Collins, Ling shows that ritual interaction is a catalyst for the development of social bonding. From this perspective, he examines how mobile communication affects face-to-face ritual situations and how ritual is used in interaction mediated by mobile communication. He looks at the evidence, including interviews and observations from around the world, that documents the effect of mobile communication on social bonding and also examines some of the other possibly problematic issues raised by tighter social cohesion in small groups. Hello everyone: I'm writing a few papers on YouTube - using a qualitative approach, including interviews with vloggers and analyses of videos - and I was wondering if anyone knew some key sources on YouTube, other online video sites (including live ones like Justin.tv) and earlier webcam communities. I know someone on here was writing on webcams, and I think some web journals have addressed the issue at length. Does anyone know of any books or articles on these topics? Perhaps someone could be willing to share a bibliography? April 1: Wiki Satire

(What follows is lite, but hopefully still quite on topic) I wanted to let you all know about the April 1 release of a new issue of Bunk Magazine (for your students or just for yourselves). http://www.bunkmag.com/mediawiki/ The premise: The Los Angeles Times, to save its flagging enterprise, has relaunched itself in an entirely wiki format as The Los Wikiless Timespedia. The piece plays with the mode of wikis and is a consideration of how old media producers get new media wrong. I do believe the issue could be incorporated into a lesson on Wikis. It's easy to edit and calls into question the changing nature of news media and media forms (perhaps most clear in the front page piece about the LA Times: Newspaper Gropes Toward New Media. [Best for 18 and older or college crowd, since some -- though not much -- of the humor is a bit adult, though probably mild by today's standards.] I'll post more commentary soon on WRT. CALL FOR PROPOSALS/ABSTRACTS Special issue of IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication to focus on "Examining the Information Economy: Perspectives for Professional Communication Practices" Guest Editors: Kirk St.Amant, Texas Tech University and Jan M. Ulijn, Eindhoven University of Technology Deadline for Proposals/Abstracts: April 10, 2008 OVERVIEW The information economy is based on the collection and the exchange of data and ideas. We all either contribute to or use materials from the information economy in most aspects of our everyday lives. Thus, the information economy exists as an environment in which we are all contributors and consumers. Within this system, effective communication is essential to success and means individuals can contribute ideas and information effectively and can make efficient use of the goods and services. In this way, each individual can play the dual role of content user (audience) and content creator (professional communicator). This ability to create new content also allows individuals to become online innovators and cyberspace entrepreneurs on a previously unprecedented level. All of this content, however, requires continual evaluation and updating in a way that emphasizes the importance of information management and of hiring and employment practices that prioritize such activities (e.g., strategic human resource management). At the same time, organizations and individuals alike need to consider how to maintain open access to needed information without sacrificing personal privacy or corporate security. Few of us, however, understand all of these nuances of the information economy or the related communication factors that affect its operations. Yet such an understanding is needed for individuals to better conceptualize their professional roles in relation to this economy. For this reason, an examination of the information economy and its effects on professional communication practices can greatly benefit individuals in the professional and technical communication industries. This special issue of the IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication (IEEE-TPC) seeks to "examine" this economic model by providing research articles, commentaries, and tutorials that explore the connections between communication practices and the products, practices, and services that constitute the information economy. The objective of the special issue is to help individuals involved in professional communication practices better understand and participate in the information economy as both contributors and consumers.
