Totally irrelevant aside: after viewing the "slide show" of the photos... I cannot get over how many macbook pros I saw on laps of conference-goers... the re-revolution is in place!!! [AIR8] Last words...

Dear AIRhearts, I am sure these won't be my LAST last words, but I just wanted to say how honoured and proud I am to have been your host here in Vancouver. It is like having a party at your home and seeing the guests enjoying themselves and going away with the fun that they have created between themselves. The magic of co-presence, perhaps. I have a glow on. LUNCH The conference has gone very well - with the exception of the weather, I'm afraid - and in almost every case where something wasn't quite right it was a simple thing that I had forgotten or not thought about (e.g., titles for the keynote speakers!). Your staying power (almost all of the Saturday afternoon sessions are either full or half full) is a credit to your dedication to the field and each other, even if it is stressing my catering predictive powers (I am sorry if you didn't get a sandwich at lunch). While your kind words have been much appreciated, I am also quite happy to hear about things that HAVEN'T gone well and will try to fix anything I can. RECYCLING I hope you will all recycle your badge holders and bags. I don't imagine that everyone will do so, but everyone who does reduces our planetary impact a little bit. I have chosen "year neutral" text on the bags, so you can do even better than recycling by reusing it at next year's conference. We will be bundling the ones we collect up and sending them to Copenhagen, and I hope that a "last year's badge/ bag" becomes a badge of honour (ahem) in future conferences. Perhaps we can "create a tradition" in this way. TRAVEL Have a safe trip home. Let me know if there is anything I can do to help you in your departure/travel plans. <declaration of interest> I review for iCS and have published in it and I was just in a bar in Downtown Vancouver with one of iCS's co-editors (Brian Loader) who missed the keynote as he had to write an iCS editorial this morning! </declaration of interest> For those not at AoIR Axel Bruns has already blogged a comprehensive note on the talk content: http://snurb.info/node/738 (which perhaps underplays the extent to which John used iCS as a 'straw man') I have published a number of pieces via Taylor & Francis (e.g. via Routledge books, iCS) and Wiley which have used the JISC/SURF copyright model. This does NOT transfer copyright to the publisher but gives them a non-exclusive license to publish and gives the author a default right to deposit in an institutional archive IMMEDIATELY ON PUBLICATION or (if need be) after an agreed period (maximum of 6 months). Ok, so they still keep the revenue but... I would strongly encourage all authors to push their publishers to use this model, many are moving towards it and will listen if you make the request. Publishers will point out that in not transferring copyright it is then up to you (or your institution) to pursue breaches of copyright. I think we all have to make a judgement on cost/benefit of that. If the first publisher on your list does not listen, vote with your feet. For those of you who are not all conferenced out, and who might want to drop by, I'm "moderating" a BOF on Scholarly YouTube tonight. There is no specific agenda (thus the BOF), just a chance to chat as a group. But given that the name is a bit cryptic... First, I hope this can generally gather together folks who are interested in online video as a topic of research. Not just YouTube, of course; there are a wide range of interesting projects out there from full movie downloads to justin.tv and the like, and with some notable exceptions (including the recipient of the best student paper award), studies of these uses of the internet were relatively thin this year. Second, I hope to give a 2 minute stump speech on organizing a "guest lecture cooperative" that trades on the enormous expertise gathered in AoIR. The idea is that contributors of a 30-45 minute guest lecture on video would have access to the collection of guest lectures. For the baby boom generation, that currently forms the film and television establishment, the media organisations and conglomerates, this unfolds as a complete nightmare. Not only because of copyright issues but increasingly due to the shift of audience to vlogging and video-sharing websites as part of the development of a broader participatory culture. The Video Vortex conference aims to contextualize these latest developments through presenting continuities and discontinuities in the artistic, activist and mainstream perspective of the last few decades. Unlike the way online video presents itself as the latest and greatest, there are long threads to be woven into the history of visual art, cinema and documentary production. The rise of the database as the dominant form of storing and accessing cultural artifacts has a rich tradition that still needs to be explored. The conference aims to raise the following questions: - How are people utilising the potential to independently produce and distribute independent video content on the Internet? - What are the alternatives to the proprietary standards currently being developed? - What are the commercial objectives that mass media is imposing on user-generated content and video-sharing databases? - What is the underlying economics of online video in the age of unlimited uploads? - How autonomous are vloggers within the broader domain of mass media? How are cinema, television and video art being affected by the development of a ubiquitous online video practice? - What type of aesthetic and narrative issues does the database pose for online video practice? The closing night will feature live acts, performances and lectures under the banner of video slamming. I just wanted to note that the allegedly racist statements by James Watson have been partially retracted it seems. My only source on this I hasten to add is the online articel in today's Independent. Also, I haven't read the actuall interiview in which Watson's comments were made, and if anyone knows where to find that interview I'd be interested. Or other comments in the scientific and/or journalistic press.
