Thanks for the info, Barry. I certainly am aware of the older and broader sociological research and debates on 'social networks'. I was only referring to the current, mundane and fashionable use of the term, i.e. groups/communities/collectives that are being supported by 'social software'. ...and I totally agree with you. Social networking communities have been established for a diverse range purposes including: professional support networking (linkedin.com) e-dating (gaydar.com) multimedia sharing (youtube.com) friendship/blogging purposes (myspace.com) virtual gaming (worldofwarcraft.com) and the participation in virtual worlds (secondlife.com) The technologies to support s! uch social networking are similarly diverse, ranging from the standard desktop computer, mobile and ubiquitous technologies and even to immersive virtual environments and other applications and services. Social networks can also be found within organisations (communities of practice, knowledge portals) and between organisations (electronic marketplaces such as Covisint, Exostar and Sabre, network organisations). Moreover, it is becoming clear that application and use of social networks in organisations can have an impact on organisational effectiveness and efficiency. Although many employees use social networking technologies in their private lives, those in organisations still have to learn and find out how they can successfully apply social networking technologies. Successful application of social networks and social networking technologies might require changes to the way organisations are structured and managed. In sum, with the study of these developments we obtain ins! ight into the affordances of public and private networks. This track w ishes to explore issues relating to the development and use of social networking communities, how and why participants are drawn to them, what constitutes a successful network and any associated dangers. We welcome both theoretical and empirical papers that employ diverse methodologies and philosophical perspectives. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute School of Humanities and Social Sciences Department of Language, Literature, and Communication Tenure Track Junior Faculty Position in Communication and Technology The Department of Language, Literature, and Communication seeks a strong scholar/researcher in communication and technology. We are especially interested in candidates whose focus complements faculty strengths in games studies, human-computer interaction, or new media studies from the perspective of current communication theory and research methods. Candidates are expected to develop a substantial program of research leading to peer-reviewed publication and external funding. Teaching opportunities will be at the undergraduate and graduate level with the typical teaching load set at two courses per semester. Our flexible program allows faculty to devise and teach courses related to individual scholarly interests. The candidate should show evidence of strong promise in teaching and scholarship The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to a multidisciplinary mission in communication in technologically mediated contexts that draws upon communication studies, human-computer interaction, digital rhetoric, technical communication, new media studies, and graphic design. The department has just added a joint B.S. in Games and Simulation Arts and Sciences and an M.S. in Human Computer Interaction to a program portfolio that includes one of the top-ranked Ph.D.s in Communication and Rhetoric in the country and a joint B.S. in Electronic Media, Arts, and Communication. The department also makes substantial contributions to teaching in B.S. and M.S. programs in Information Technology. Faculty and students have access to the Social and Behavioral Research Laboratory (http://www.sbrl.rpi.edu) and other Institute research facilities. David, I haven't seen Annette Markham's Life Online mentioned in this discussion so far. She does some very close ethnographic description of the online experience in MUDs which could be quite helpful in a phenomenological vein. She has a wonderful interview with Terri Senft, who is on this list and who I believe might also have some smart things to say about phenomenology, performativity, and that sort of thing -- most of her writing is collected on her website or in her LiveJournal. Bonnie Nardi, who was mentioned to you earlier, is also on this list and would be a good person to pose this question to; she is normally very responsive to email but I believe she is out of the country this term and I haven't heard much from her.
