The organization of the VIII International Conference on Online Journalism (#8COBCIBER) invites interested researchers to submit, *by June 30, 2024,* communication proposals to be presented at the conference. Communications should be about Cyberjournalism, with special preference for the topic of this #8COBCIBER, *"Platforms and players: embracing innovation, facing challenges".* It is suggested that proposals may address, among others, the following topics: *- Social implications of the “platformization” process;- Innovation in social media platforms;- Relevant platforms and actors in disinformation;- New actors in the face of cyberjournalistic authority;- Artificial Intelligence and cyberjournalism;- Cybermedia, attention economy and Algorithms;- Privacy and security of cyber media and cyber journalists;- Corporate communication in digital environments vs. Cyberjournalism;- Media literacy and cyberjournalism;- Consumption of online news and psychosocial effects;- Business models and monetization in cyberjournalism;- Cyberjournalism and diversity (social, cultural, etc.);- Cyberjournalism and gamification;- New cyberjournalisms;- Cyberjournalism and audience(s);- Cyberjournalism as a response to “news deserts”;- Strategies to mitigate growing news avoidance* Proposals, in the form of an extended abstract, may be written in *English, Portuguese, Spanish or French.* Each must include a description of *400 to 500 words*, which includes, in particular, the topic and its relevance, hypothesis or argument, conceptual and methodological framework, expected results and up to five keywords. Call for papers: Social Media Communication and Right-Wing Populisms in Latin America and Beyond Conference: 10-11 December 2024 (in person and online) CFP deadline: 31 July 2024 Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil, Nayib Bukele in El Salvador and Javier Milei in Argentina are just a few paradigmatic cases which represent, to different degrees, the rise of populism, the advances of right-wing radicalism and the resurgence of extreme nationalism in Latin America in the last decade. We use the term "right-wing populism" to refer, as some Latin Americanists have done, to the ideological conservative elements and national-populist influences, namely the construction of political antagonisms, alongside the explicit praise and support of local capitalist systems. The cohesive element at the regional level is the post-colonial historical situation: Latin America's colonial roots engendered a profoundly hierarchical society whose dominant classes have felt threatened by a series of recent rights advances on the part of minoritised groups, responding in reactionary terms. It is also common for these leaders to advocate for greater military investment, as well as speak nostalgically of the patriarchal order and hardline security approaches that authoritarian regimes enacted in the past. However, beyond these sociological aspects, the emergence of right-wing populist leaders as representatives of a mass phenomenon calls for in-depth studies of new forms of communication. How can a political project that defends the interests of a privileged few, namely white men, become a phenomenon that is radically defended by large sectors of the population? How does the study of the social media communication that is used by right-wing populisms inform us about broad processes of socio-political polarisation? This conference will discuss how, through social media communication, Latin American right-wing populisms are configuring their own discourses, with regional particularities as well as global influences. This is a timely theme as Latin America’s right-wing populisms, which are under-researched compared to their Anglo-European equivalents, have expanded throughout the region and have built global connections. Over 2 days, the conference will place a particular focus on how social media communication exacerbates political polarisation, radicalisation, and violent political cultures through the study of the uses that political influencers and far-right populist sympathisers make of these media. While focused on Latin America, we also invite scholars and practitioners who work on processes of radicalisation in other parts of the world to submit their papers in order to enable discussions about common and divergent elements as well as connections with other expressions of right-wing populisms. Paper submissions may address, but are not limited to, the following themes: - Analysis of communication strategies on social media by right-wing parties. - Disinformation and fake news in right-wing populist social media campaigns. - Meme culture and the use of codes such as humour and irony to build adherence and normalise certain forms of violence. - The role of youth in digital mobilization for or against right-wing populisms - The role of gender in the political communication of right-wing leaders and influencers. - The role of AI and social media algorithms in facilitating political polarisation. - Regulation and legal challenges in content management on social media in the political context. - The challenges and ethics of social media research with/on right-wing populisms. New Report: Digital Misinformation in 9 election cycles in Asia

Dear All, I am very thrilled to share with you that our work (Anushree Majumdar and I) with the Upgrade Democracy <https://www.bertelsmann-stiftung.de/en/our-projects/upgrade-democracy>project, looking at digital disinformation in 9 major election cycles in Asia, post the COVID19 pandemic management shifts in the region, has resulted into a new report titled The Making of Misinformation Choice. <https://www.bertelsmann-stiftung.de/en/publications/publication/did/the-mak…> The report builds on critical policy and literature review, extensive interviews with fact-checkers, disinformation debunking activists, and civil society organisations in 9 regions and countries, to think about the ways in which new information regimes are established that persuade and convince people to make misinformed choices in electoral actions. The report produces a new framework of digital misinformation as a stack, looks at the ways in which information contamination and manipulation happens, examines the difficulties in doing fact-checking as individual actors, and looks at the best practices and counter-measures that are being tried and developed across the region. This workshop, led by professors Gerald Voorhees and Kishonna Gray, synthesizes insights from leading voices in games research and/or creation to help games researchers, educators, makers, and students adopt equity-oriented principles and practices. Participants should come to the workshop with an ongoing or upcoming project in mind and leave with an plan to embed anti-racism, decolonization, and equity, diversity, and inclusion (ADE) into the research questions, execution of project (including methodologies and organization of the lab or team), and knowledge dissemination strategy. This 4 hour workshop will feature seminar style presentations, large group discussion, and small group discussion. Participants will hear brief reports on A. established, emerging, and overlooked lines of ADE-oriented inquiry in games scholarship, B. research and scholarship on white, heteropatriarchal presumptions and biases in games and play research, and C. best practices and new avenues for embedding ADE values and practices in research. Participants will also engage in discussion facilitated by workshop leaders A. about how ADE is and/or is not taken up in their subfields and the disciplines in which they were trained, B. to collaboratively develop and generate feedback on select sample ADE plans, and C. in breakout groups to create ADE plans for each participant before reporting their plans to the large group for further feedback from other participants and workshop leaders.

We invite scholars, researchers, web archivists to contribute to the 6th RESAW conference on the topic of “The Datafied Web”, through a historical lens. We would like to delve into the historical roots, trends, and trajectories that shaped the data-driven paradigm in web development and to examine the genealogies of the datafied and metrified web. Historical studies of trajectories towards a databased web and the emergence of platform-driven mobile ecosystems are very welcome, as well as case studies for instance related to the development of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and the evolution of data-sharing practices. Uncovering the early forms of analytics software, their origins, and the role they played in shaping the web landscape, and examining the historical context, aesthetics and role of web counters, analytics tools, mobile sensing and other metrics may also help us deepen our understanding of online interactions, past publics and audiences, and their (uneasy) trajectories. “The datafied web” also raises questions related to methods and (web) archives allowing to research this evolution: what are for instance the challenges and methodologies involved in archiving the metrified and increasingly mobile web, including the back-end infrastructure? This theme also invites us to trace the historical trajectory of data surveillance and the evolution of data capturing practices on the web. Complementary are issues related to the historical development of tracking mechanisms, cookies, and the creation of digital footprints, as well as the evolution of companies relying on metrics, and the development of financialized web spaces and their implications. By investigating historical controversies and debates surrounding the increasing datafication of the web and uncovering historical instances of innovative data use or resistance practices against the datafication of the web, this conference also aims at reconstructing vivid and key debates that are transversal to the history of the web. How did the datafied web provide for the sensory media environments that we are now living in? Finally, we wish to discuss innovative research methodologies for uncovering the historical dimensions of the datafied and metrified web, as well as methods that are approaching web archives as data (from an archiving and research perspective) and explore them through distant reading, metadata, seed lists, and other methods. Resisting spatiotemporal media operations in computational culture A special issue of Computational Culture, a Journal of Software Studies Edited by Kathrin Friedrich and Sebastian Randerath Tracking takes place ubiquitously and at different scales – from satellite-based wildlife tracking (Benson 2010) to automated monitoring of supply chain workers through radio-frequency identification (RFID) (Hayles 2009; Kanngieser 2013) and to ubiquitous self-surveillance through self-tracking apps (Lupton 2021). With the expansion of sensor-based geomedia as well as embodied computing, tracking also becomes a key media operation for environmental sensing or virtual reality experiences (Egliston and Carter 2022; Gabrys 2019). The computational logics of tracking result in new aesthetic and operational regimes that diminish sensory perception and privilege logics of calculation, which in turn co-constitute mobile forms of (non-)human action and tactical interventions (Crandall 2010; Hansen 2015). Countering tracking has become a key form of resisting the logics of computational culture. Subversive encounters have emerged in recent years as counterpoints to the hegemonic logics of web infrastructures (Christl and Spiekermann 2016), platform labor (Heiland 2021) and racial capitalism (Russell and De Souza 2023). These attempts to counter tracking take forms that range from investigative visualizations (Fuller and Weizman 2021) or provoking glitches in tracking infrastructures (Leszczynski and Elwood 2022) to uncovering web-based tracking (Sharelab 2015), building counter-infrastructures for labor resistance (Qadri and D’Ignazio 2022), or using sensors and satellite images for critical investigations (Ballinger 2023; Boyd et al. 2018). Countering tracking becomes a resistant media operation itself, disentangling hegemonic spatiotemporal regimes and their socio-political forces. These forms of countering tracking challenge existing theoretical approaches to the critical analysis of tracking and open up new perspectives on subversion and resistance in computational culture. How is countering tracking by means of tracking possible in different contexts and in relation to software, infrastructures and aesthetics? We invite critical encounters through and of tracking, enabling new perspectives on computational infrastructures, software, (non-)human aesthetics and operative interactions, by means of theoretical reflections, critical making or activism. We aim at gathering submissions that 1) render existing tracking operations perceivable; 2) disrupt tracking infrastructures; or 3) operationalize tracking itself for resistance. The special issue invites theoretical, conceptual and performative approaches from fields such as media studies, visual studies, artistic research, sociology and critical geography to address the question of how tracking becomes a repressive, subversive or activistic media operation. The sixth edition will take place at Tien Giang University. Over the last few years, real-time intelligent computing has radically transformed the human lifestyle. Research on real-time intelligent systems is multi-disciplinary, exploiting concepts from diverse areas such as big data processing, computational intelligence, location-based services, recommendation systems, and multimedia processing. In today’s highly dynamic environment, analysing data in real-time is necessary to understand how systems process data, reason the outputs, and anticipate trends in intelligent computing. To this end, this conference will serve as a platform to manifest the ongoing research in the field. Hello qualitative and mixed methods research fans! You might have observed that some of the old concepts of online community are finding new interpretations. The idea of a members-only walled garden was derided not long ago. Now it doesn't seem so crazy to wall off blinking ads, AI bots, bullies, and other online weirdness. Content-focused email newsletters have made a comeback! That is one reason I'm starting a (free) monthly newsletter on Substack: "When the Field is Online." Starting in August of 2024, each issue will focus on a specific topic related to qualitative research and our roles and experiences as researchers. While I use the term online, I intend it as shorthand for any information and communications technology, including apps, that we might use in research.
