Call for papers: An International Conference in Berlin, Germany, 16-18 October 2024 AI and warfare – Investigating the technological and political domains of current conflicts Global conflicts and challenges to international security are among the most pressing issues of our time. Artificial intelligence is increasingly shaping the ways in which warfare is conducted, adding both complications and urgency to the issues caused by the current major geopolitical shifts. AI is one of the driving factors of technological change in warfare in general, with its major effects mainly related to new degrees of complexity in automation and new forms of human-machine interaction. On the one hand, this change introduces new capabilities in weapons systems, in particular in the fields of processing information, generating knowledge and the automation of decision-making. Most prominently, this results in a decreasing level of human intervention and control, thereby reshaping the relationship between human operators and autonomous weapons systems. On the other hand, AI-related developments do not only concern the kinetic dimension of warfare but also expand into what military theory calls the ‘information domain’. Shaping and controlling narratives has been an integral part of conflicts and warfare for a long time, with disinformation and propaganda campaigns utilising the most recent (media) technologies for this purpose. The functionality of AI applications will increasingly be integrated in these efforts, as can already be observed with the dissemination of manipulated content on social media. AI-based technologies are also deployed in cyber warfare, which is not limited to the singular hacking of a system, but rather targeted to directly affect whole digital military infrastructures or civilian entities in politics, the economy or research. The objective of the conference is to explore these domains of modern warfare in order to develop a more accurate picture of the various effects of AI in military contexts. Another goal is to broaden the perspective of the military deployment of AI beyond questions of weapon systems and their control, by particularly looking at adversarial uses of AI in hybrid forms of warfare in the information domain. The conference particularly aims to develop and establish a dialogue between the research on these two domains that are often explored separately. Against this background and in this spirit, we invite contributions along the following lines of inquiry: (1) AI in military technologies and the relationship between humans and machines The developments of machine learning and automated decision-making in networked and data-rich environments do not simply change weapons systems but rather have to be modelled as elements in complex systems of humans and machines. Military applications of AI, for example, pose various kinds of problems at the level of human control over these systems which can exert potentially lethal effects. They are also at the core of networked information processing (for example to select targets) and decision-making based on complex forms of synthesising data. Information superiority, situational awareness and electronic warfare are crucial issues for an understanding of the contemporary forms of military applications of AI-based weapons systems. Talks in this section may address historical or contemporary examples for AI-based information processing in military systems and decision making such as target selection, including various forms of cyber liabilities of military networks and infrastructures (for example communication infrastructure as well as logistics or energy supply). It may also explore current technologies based on concepts of human-machine interaction, with questions on the role of interfaces, including battlefield management systems, or human-machine teaming in the interactions between manned and unmanned systems. Relevant contributions in this section may also analyse how research and development of military technologies are informed by larger cultural narratives of AI-enabled weapons. (2) AI and the relationship between political processes and information warfare Automated and autonomous forms of information generation and processing also extend deeply into the media systems of societies, its respective militaries, civil institutions and political systems. Corresponding questions concern various forms of automated manipulation of public opinion, via bots or targeted misinformation (including deep fakes) on social media platforms. This domain particularly addresses the political decision-making processes in an information and media environment that is increasingly influenced by AI technologies. Talks in this section may address topics such as the use of AI in efforts to manipulate public opinion or political processes as part of hybrid attacks or warfare in the information domain. Besides the use of generative AI in producing manipulated content, phenomena also include AI-enabled mass surveillance, as well as the targeting, profiling and tracing of individuals in exerting power or with manipulative intentions (particularly evoking emotional responses). Other issues concern the question of how these developments challenge the idea of democratic legitimacy or mechanisms of regulation and accountability (e.g. democratic control of autonomous decision-making in military contexts). We welcome contributions from scholars of diverse disciplines such as computer science, cultural studies, political science, international relations & security studies, media and communication studies, military studies, psychology, sociology and science and technology studies. Interdisciplinary approaches as well as perspectives from practitioners and developers are also encouraged. Recordings of the event are available, which give an idea of the rich opportunities at this intersection, and can be found here: https://vimeo.com/showcase/11044138 An edited collection is now under consideration with Emerald Publishing which will bring together fan studies scholars and design researchers to discuss where new exciting research may emerge at the intersection of these two areas. Confirmed contributors include our symposium keynote speaker Dr Bethan Jones, and others who spoke at the event. Call for chapters Fan studies is a field of research which examines fans, fan cultures and fandom. Although often associated with disciplines such as media studies and English literature, it is an interdisciplinary field that spans a multitude of lenses through which to consider what fans do and what fans create. Design research is the study of design; what designers do, how research can support design, and how design can be a research method for creation of new knowledge. Design is problem-focused, considering ways in which we can design new products, services, and experiences that may require consideration of multiple stakeholders, and address complex 'wicked' problems with no single correct solution. Fan studies and design are both relatively young disciplines (Jacobs, 2018), both of which are familiar with interdisciplinarity, and with co-production and participation. Many fans take part in activities which might be considered design; from production of creative outputs such as fanvids and fanart (Nielsen, 2021), to community-led projects for activism (Kligler-Vilenchik et al, 2012), and creating platforms such as Archive of Our Own (Fiesler et al, 2016). Similarly, many current questions being addressed in design research have bearing on fan communities, including design for sustainability (Lamerichs, 2024), the design and affordances of platforms (Ghosh and Aragon, 2024) and the implications of new technologies such as AI (Li and Pang, 2024) Examples of potential chapter topics include but are not limited to: * Brands, marketing and merchandise * Participatory design methods and the acafan * Design of fan platforms * How platform designs and affordances shape practices and community * Design, data storytelling and digital humanities * Fan practice as design - memetics, fanmerch and transformative works * Service design in fan tourism How to submit We invite those who work in fan studies, those who work in design research, or those who are already working between these areas to submit chapter abstracts of 250-500 words. Joint expertise in both fields is not required, only a curiosity about one or both areas. Our conference proposal is grounded in the work of David Morley, emphasizing the importance of paying attention to the materialities and contexts of mobile communications in relation to our everyday, always situated life: "context is no 'optional extra' which we might study at the end of the analytic process but rather, is best seen as a 'starting point' which has determining effects on both production and consumption" (2017, 2). In a recent book, Morley, along with Annette Hill, Maren Hartmann, and Magnus Andersson, introduces the concept of "mobile socialities" as a generative concept to reclaim the anthropological tradition of cultural and media reception studies and incorporate them into mobilities, reflecting on people in motion and the role of mobile media in everyday life. The paradigm of mobilities has opened up the field of social sciences to explore the role of movement in the constitution and functioning of institutions and social practices in recent decades (Urry, 2007): the constant flow of people, objects, money, communications, and ideas. These are physical or imaginary movements that also involve complex combinations of networks, relationships, technologies, and systems, not limited to fixed spaces. This mobility paradigm is defined as a non-media-centric approach and suggests moving away from solely identifying communicative processes and practices with the phenomenon of media and technologies. From this perspective, mobile communications allow experiencing everyday life as a continuum that problematizes the fragmentation of the public and private, production and reproduction, as well as the division between spaces and territories. The relational aspect is crucial and necessary to emphasize in a current climate and migration crisis: what happens in one place affects another, and people's experiences of life, their relationship with ideas, imaginaries and objects are very different, intersectional, interdependent, changing and dynamic. The aim of the conference is to contextualize mobilities and think about them in connection with socialities, representations, and discourses of popular culture, a central element of our contemporary societies, and the sense of belonging that these mobile communications enhance in communities, territories, cultures and traditions. Call For Papers 2024 JERAA Conference University of Melbourne Wednesday 27 - Friday 29 November 2024 Early Career Researchers Day Tuesday 26 November 2024 Forward: facing the next wave of journalism disruption ‘Forward’ is about imagining and preparing for the future and then proceeding to face the challenges and possibilities ahead. For contemporary journalism, it implies critically anticipating and dealing with the consequences of seemingly endless waves of technological disruption. Gerard is the Pulitzer Prize and Emmy-award winning director of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) in Washington, DC. He led the worldwide teams of journalists who worked on the Offshore Leaks, Panama Papers, Paradise Papers, Implant Files, FinCEN Files, and Pandora Papers investigations - the six biggest collaborations in journalism history. The Pandora Papers project involved more than 600 journalists at more than 150 news outlets in 117 countries working together. Gerard has won and shared in more than 90 major journalism awards from eight countries, including five Walkley Awards. In 2021, ICIJ was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Award-winning ABC journalist Bridget Brennan will deliver a keynote address on critical topics including reporting on Indigenous affairs and violence against women. Bridget has been a journalist with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation for more than a decade. A Dja Dja Wurrung, Yorta Yorta woman, she is a newsreader and presenter at News Breakfast, and recently the Indigenous Affairs Editor at ABC. In 2017, Bridget was appointed the ABC’s first National Indigenous Affairs Correspondent, reporting on the murders of Aboriginal women in Central Australian communities, and investigated racism in Australia’s health system and the escalating number of Aboriginal children being removed from their families. Last year, Bridget was a fellow with the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at Oxford Universities where she researched the global pressures facing First Nations reporters in mainstream newsrooms. Bridget, together with Brooke Fryer, Suzanne Dredge and Stephanie Zillman won the 2023 Melbourne Press Club Gold Quill for their Four Corners investigation “How Many More?” which shone a light on the crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women. US researcher Casey Mock, Chief Policy and Public Affairs Officer at the Center for Humane Technology, will examine AI and deception at the 2024 JERAA Conference. Casey’s address will consider how AI disturbs coverage of this year's US Presidential Election. He will discuss latest CHT research that explores how misinformation/disinformation harms people's right to freedom of speech, and freedom to think, and what journalists can do to constructively respond. Here is our minitrack description: Systems of all sizes, shapes, and types have always contained abuses of power. How we understand and mitigate such abuse is one way to create better systems that support people to be their best, optimizing performance and teamwork. This minitrack aims to explore how the global system sciences community, in collaboration with other diverse stakeholders worldwide (and synergistic disciplines), can leverage the power of history, social science, and information technology to glean valuable insights that can be made actionable and harnessed to combat abuses of power in systems; addressing such abuses early can potentially prevent real-world negative implications on people navigating those systems, which have proven to be especially detrimental to members of marginalized communities. This minitrack seeks to advance conceptual, historical, and empirical approaches to combating abuses of power in systems broadly defined. For guidance, we define abuses of power in systems as occurring when influence and control are misused by one or more individuals within systems to the detriment of others. We are open to a variety of research methods and theoretical approaches encompassed within systems sciences, focused on abuse in systems and/or understanding systemic abuses of power. Papers should bring a transdisciplinary perspective and should be written for a broad and diverse target audience. Potential topics for exploration could include, but should not be limited to: * How to advance prevention of, and/or active surveillance for “big abuses” of power rooted in systemic enablers, incentives, and cultures in academia and in other societal institutions. * How to engender transparency in reporting, measurement, and amelioration of systemic abuses of power. * How to reimagine and drive cultural transformation to eradicate abuses of power at organizational and system levels in academia and beyond, including how to recognize and surmount barriers they pose to innovation. * How to envision a path to learning systems underpinning continuous improvement in ameliorating systemic abuses of power in academia and beyond. * How to raise social consciousness vis-à-vis such issues so as to mobilize society toward ultimately eradicating them. * How to empower Davids to outmaneuver abusive systems of Goliaths supported by “Armies of Enablers”. * How to understand the social, economic, and (physical and mental) health consequences of abuse. * How to collaboratively formulate a research agenda to guide and propel this global scientific community forward. Dear All, Attention and Perception in XR A hybrid symposium King’s College London, 20-21 June 2024 The XR and Attention Research Group and the Centre for Attention Studies at King’s College London have the pleasure to invite you to a symposium on Attention and Perception in XR. (XR stands for Extended Reality, encompassing Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Mixed Reality – and different forms of AI used to design those realities). The symposium combines presentations, discussions, immersive project showcases and networking activities across two days. It brings together scholars and creatives to discuss the problem of attention and perception in XR, and explore what XR means for us at this present historical and technical moment. The symposium seeks to open up discussion into: • the physiological and socio-cultural mechanisms of making and shaping attention in and with XR • how we might use those mechanisms to make XR spaces more body-caring and human-centred, and how performing arts might inform the design of those spaces • how we might reshape the knowledge of cultural heritage and create new centres of attention across disciplinary boundaries.
