All you AIRcrastinators!... Get off the phone, stop writing letters with pens and paper, finish that fax you're working on... it is time to play with the internet! That's right - you have been given a reprieve. In two ways. Here are the details: HOTEL Although the Ramada is now fully booked, I've found another discount hotel (details on the wiki: http://wiki.aoir.org/index.php?title=IR8_Quality_Details) for those of you looking for a less expensive option (also $79/night AND free internet). It is a bit further away, but not crazy (1.8km or just over a mile). The Delta - right across the street - still has rooms and I can highly recommend it. A bit more expensive, sure, but you're worth every penny, aren't you? REGISTRATION The "early bird rate" has been extended for a week, until July 22. Get 'em while they're hot, folks! ICE-T again

The last Aoir digest suggests that the response to my ICE-T proposal has run its course. As you may recall, I suggested Exchange be added to Information and Communication. I haven't archived or done heavy analysis, but the response on This List was unenthusiastic. More interesting to me were the reasons. Basically, "everything is communication" (Luhmannites), etc, or "everything is information: I wish the proponents of each would duke it out (we could make a YouTube video), but I won't join either camp. You can expand any definition of information or communciation to include anything. I could as easily as say (as a sociologist) that all is social organization and social relations. Take for example, sex: certainly, it is communication and social relations, and for the unprotected, all that DNA information is exchanged (after phone numbers). But like Carrie Bradshaw, I think more is gained by keeping sexual relations as a separate category. Where I made a mistake, by aiming for cute memorability, was the Exchange part for ICE-T. What I was really after was E-Commerce, especially the sending/selling and receiving/buying of Things. So we might call the E: "E-Commerce Technologies" to preserve the ICE-T. And if you think that such behaviour boils down to info or comm, go have it out with the economists. Which leads me to the larger point: do we need to disaggregate I and C? I work a lot in the C world, and it seems to me that interpersonal communication (on/offline) is different from civic involvement (what social network analysts call 2-mode connectivity -- person:organization). I have commented before that the anti-war protests in my home town were organised almost exclusively via a yahoo discussion group. At the moment the campaign for the radical Martin Powell-Davies is being organised via a yahoo discussion group, a blog http://electmartin.blogspot.com and a website http(a)//martin4vp.org.uk Martin is standing for vice president of the National Union of Teachers but he is a radical activist in his native Lewisham and the mainstream groups in the NUT are all opposed to his activist agenda. To be frank they are a little old and tired and "anything for a quiet life" these days..Martin's campaign is a direct challenge to the New Labour government and the NUT leadership are busy shying away from that. I also noted that the Campaign for a New Workers' Party has a facebook group. [AOIR8] Ramada sold out

I wouldn't normally pepper you with more than one message per month, but I think I should let the list know that the cheaper of the two conference hotels - the Ramada - is now sold out, or soon will be. If you are looking for a nice hotel in Vancouver, I can recommend the Delta which is right across the street from the conference. http://wiki.aoir.org/index.php?title=IR8_Delta_Details I am also negotiating with another hotel, the Quality Inn, for some rooms. But I think you might - if you haven't already - want to start looking on your own. The internet, I hear, is very good for that sort of thing.... In a previous year I think I suggested 5K. That's a workable size -- enough to say something but not too long to go overboard.
