vlog history project for aoir conference

For the AOIR conference this year I submitted a proposal in the "creative or aesthetic presentation" category. The presentation is called "A Brief History of the Video Blog" and the project covers the video blog community, as represented by the Yahoo video blog group, within the context of my own experience as a video blogger. I am not a creative professional, and have never submitted research in this form before. It is mainly just my effort to combine my passion for video blogging with my work as a professor of information science in technology, whose research covers human-computer interaction, especially as it relates to web-based learning technologies. (Largely traditional quantitative research). Part of the project called for the creation of a video blog (not surprising :), and, for anyone interested, I have posted my first video and I plan to continue posting weekly until the conference. SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS, Focus on Africa

Dear Sir, Madam, On the occasion of the 33rd anniversary of Delft University of Technology the two-day symposium, "Sustainable Solutions, Focus on Africa" will take place Thursday 1 and Friday 2 November 2007 at the university's Aula Conference Centre. The key question of the symposium is, 'What contribution can (technical) Universities make to sustainable development, particularly but not exclusively in Africa?' To answer this question properly, the relationship between the technical quality of projects and the social (People) environment (Planet) and economic (Prosperity) quality will be established. The metaphor for this '4P' model is the tetraeder. Although the main quality is at the top, it still rests on the three other qualities. The first part of the symposium focuses on mono-disciplinary themes such as water, energy, food, health, urban areas, resources, mobility and ICT. These are followed by more interdisciplinary themes such as entrepreneurship and climate change and risks. In the last part, there is a quest for a trans-disciplinary approach in which government authorities, business, science, education and NGOs work together. This trans-disciplinary approach is necessary to achieve the Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations before 2015. This concerns a marked improvement in the area of poverty, hunger, education, womens rights, child mortality, aids and malaria, a sustainable living environment and fair trade. In Africa, particularly, this is an enormous challenge. The symposium will bring together representatives from various world perspectives and continents: government authorities, business, (technical) universities, other educational institutions and NGOs. Together, they are working on sustainable solutions for Africa and the rest of the world. When Google aggregates different social software types, how is it going to handle the different amounts/kinds of disclosure that the different softwares now permit/forbid. Ethnicity and race in social networking sites

Hi everyone, I am currently doing research on the use of social networking sites by Norwegian ethnic minority youth. My study focuses on Norwegian social networking sites as well as other popular sites like Facebook, Myspace, and Hi5, all of which are popular among the target group of my study. The methods I use involve in-depth interviews and a discourse analysis of personal profile pages. I am looking at processes of identity construction and the potential of social networking sites as spaces of free expression. I am at the moment trying to update my reading list on the subject, so if anyone has any suggestions on literature related to race and ethnicity in social networking sites, and on the internet in general, I would really appreciate your contribution. PARIS STATEMENT ON INNOVATION FOR DEVELOPMENT An International Conference on “Innovation for Development” was held at UNESCO, Paris, on 3-4 May 2007. The conference was co-organised by the European Association for the Transfer of Technology, Innovation and Industrial Information (TII), and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The conference included sessions on technology and innovation for development, north- south university partnerships, exchanges with emerging countries, innovation support policies, services and management, knowledge transfer from the research base, corporate social responsibility and public-private partnerships. The concluding plenary session included a panel discussion and the production of a “Paris Statement on Innovation for Development”. Conference speakers and participants included both TII members - innovation specialists and managers – and representatives of UNIDO, the UNESCO delegations, The World Bank, OECD, WIPO, the European Commission and the European Investment Bank as well as national development agencies and delegates from developing countries, thereby reflecting the interest of TII, in partnership with UNESCO, to develop a network on innovation for development. PARIS STATEMENT ON INNOVATION FOR DEVELOPMENT The European innovation community at the TII-UNESCO conference on “Innovation for Development” emphasised the importance of innovation for sustainable economic development, and highlighted various support measures, policies and programmes that have contributed to successful innovation, with particular reference to developing countries and the UN Millennium Development Goals. Innovation depends upon the development of products or services with a competitive advantage, responding to market needs and acceptance, making effective use of natural and financial resources, human and institutional capacity in research and development, in a public environment that is supportive of private sector entrepreneurs and enterprise. Innovation and the transfer of technology is particularly facilitated by the employment of young graduates familiar with current knowledge, financial support for research in key areas, effective intellectual property asset protection and management, the dissemination and commercial exploitation of research results and new technologies through licensing agreements and contract research, spin-off companies that commercialize university research, as well as legal and business support services which help entrepreneurs succeed in complex business environments. Towards an action plan In pursuit of the UN Millennium Development Goals and other issues such as climate change and the need for clean technology, the European innovation community resolves to: - Assist developing countries in promoting innovation, entrepreneurship and associated support policies, capacity building, staff exchange schemes, studentships and information exchange, in order to build comprehensive and efficient innovation support systems, - Develop strong partnerships with developing country counterparts, especially European research and cooperation partner countries, - Help increase research and innovation capacities in developing countries with support funds, including European funding facilities (such as the European Commission and the EIB), the World Bank and the EBRD, - Support, protect and disseminate research results from developing and emerging countries, through patenting and equitable contract practices, support entrepreneurship, incubation and technology transfer, financial tools and associated policies and investments. The innovation community pledges to assist governments in helping to promote innovation for development and to address the Millennium Development Goals, and calls upon UNESCO and other UN, European, national, regional and financial organisations to be partners in this process, including all stakeholders in innovation and technology transfer. The innovation community offers and invites partnership with UNESCO and related agencies in the following areas of service and activity: - Facilitating dialogue between policy makers and innovation support practitioners in developing and emerging countries to improve the uptake and application of innovation support services, - Competence building and professional skills development through seminars, workshops, summer schools, quality control, innovation management techniques and the exchange of good practice, - Increasing education capacities (create modern Master and Executive programmes) in entrepreneurship, technology commercialization and innovation in developing countries, - Consensus building support among all types of innovation support practitioner through seminars, workshops and advice, - Information, dissemination and networking activities including the development of website and associated resources, professional directory, events calendar, organisation of international, national and regional activities, monitoring and brokerage with support services and funds. CALL FOR PAPERS Special Issue of The Information Society on Open Source and Public Sector: Discourse, Politics and Practice Guest Editors: Jan Ljungberg, Magnus Bergquist and Anna Maria Szczepanska In the last ten years the Open Source (OS) and Free Software (FS) movement has come to challenge the norms and ideals, products and procedures of the dominant proprietary software industry. OS/FS represents a radically different logic within the field of software development. This logic is based on ideas that celebrate the rights of the user and informational freedoms and resist strong intellectual property laws and regulations. In addition to gaining ground in the commercial software market, the OS/FS-movement is also establishing itself as an interesting alternative for the public sector. Currently, discussions regarding OS/FS procurement and policy-making are taking place within governments and public sector organizations all over the world. The OS/FS-technologies advocates have promoted them on the basis of their potential cost-benefits, their value as “a public good,” their egalitarian and digital divide-bridging qualities and so forth. But the public sector initiatives still seem somewhat hesitant. The OS/FS in public sector discussions and policy-making processes represent a discourse still very much in the making. This special issue will provide an opportunity for researchers to present valuable insights at an early stage about a relevant topic that crosscuts the information technology and policy processes and OS/FS movement’s institutionalization processes. We hope to bring together insights from multiple areas, such as political science, sociology, economics, IS-research, media studies, policy studies and cultural studies. Discourse analysis and case studies would both be welcome analytical strategies to provide breadth to the special issue. Contributions could include the following: - Papers identifying and discussing how underlying norms, values and practices inscribed in OS/FS and proprietary software are understood and dealt with in public sector discourse. - Case studies on evolving policies and laws related to Open Source / Free Software in the public sector. - Papers analyzing the rhetoric on the pros and cons of OS/FS in the public sector. - Papers identifying and analyzing the way actors (e.g. the media, business groups, academia, consumers, NGO’s, SMO’s, transnational advocacy networks) are organizing in order to influence, support or criticize policy processes and other activities relating to the dispersal of OS/FS products and ideas in public sector.
