Summer 2008 ESRC Research Methods Festival in Oxford: Call for Research Ethics Session

Contribution to a Research Ethics Session at the 2008 ESRC Methods Festival The Oxford e-Social Science Project (OeSS), part of the National Centre for e-Social Science, has been asked to organize a session on research ethics at the 2008 ESRC Research Methods Festival from 30 June to 3 July 2008. It will be held at St Catherine’s College, Oxford, as was the previous festival in 2006, see: www.ccsr.ac.uk/ methods/festival/index.html Our particular session is scheduled from 9.15 – 12.45 (with a break) on 2 July. The basic format, which is flexible, would be 3-4 speakers with 1-2 discussants, leaving 30-40 minutes for general discussion. As a coordinator of this session, I am asking if you might be willing to propose a paper or be willing to serve as a discussant. The programme committee will need a provisional programme of speakers by September, so I will need to firm this up as soon as possible over August. Titles and abstracts would be due by the end of November 2007, but fuller versions of the presentations, ideally as a paper, would not be needed until May 2008. At this time, we are keeping the session open to a wide range of possible topics. We are interested in the issues raised by the application of advances in information and communication technologies, such as the Internet, both as a new research tool and new space in which research methods are applied. However, we are open to innovative treatments of ethical issues within any domain for research, including case studies, policy studies, frameworks for understanding the ethical issues of social science research, ethical issues arising within multi- or inter-disciplinary and international research, and research ethics as an object of study from any social science disciplinary perspective. From the OeSS project we have become convinced that ethical issues are rising in significance across a range of subject areas. Is this an inherent feature of new ways of conducting research, or a transitional phase? If you might be interested in participating, please let me know what topic(s) you would propose, and I will get back with you. Whether or not you are personally interested in contributing, I would welcome your advice on emerging issues or studies that should be incorporated in this session. Travel and Expenses: Travel is expected to come out the existing ESRC research budgets of participants. If you are not in a position to fund your travel in Britain from an existing ESRC research project, please let me know as we can apply for a limited amount of local travel funds. Dear Colleagues, I would like to bring to your attention the following event and call for papers: KCTOS: Knowledge, Creativity, and Transformation of Societies Vienna, Austria, 6 to 9 December 2007 Call for Papers for the section: Indigenous Peoples Knowledge Society: Transformations and Challenges / Indigene in der Wissensgesellschaft: Transformationen und Herausforderungen http://www.inst.at/kctos/sektionen_a-f/fiser_budka.htm Abstract: Of the more than 300 Million Indigenous Peoples recognized by the United Nations, a growing minority is actively shaping indigenous visions of a knowledge-based society. These visions are not simply indigenous responses to global mainstream debates over post-industrial development or techno-scientific culture, etc. More importantly, they articulate the actual deployment of new media and information communications technologies (ICTs) by indigenous communities to forward their own policies and practices. They frame how indigenous communities are mobilizing over the internet and on the Web to communicate their lived experiences and extend their local networks to global audiences, including and especially, a global indigenous audience. For academics in the field, online indigenous communities are opening up spaces of inquiry beyond the digital divide by actively co-creating virtual communities and transforming their cultural experience through ICTs (i.e., real life in cyberspace). Questions about resources, knowledge/power and access continue to be important, but they have become more complicated by issues of networking and social life, virtual reproduction, and information policy. These new social, political, and cultural forms of indigeneity will be discussed within this section. It's largely a question of definition, but Murray Turoff (soon joined by Roxanne Hiltz), and abetted by Peter & Trudy Johnson-Lenz, started EIES in the mid-1970s, after Murray civilianized the work he did for the US "Civil Defense" organization. This pre-Internet setup used a central dial-in server (at 10 cps, as I recall), reached by an 800 number. It had some nice features -- choice of real name, nickname, anonymous contribution; ability to recall messages; easy to set up conferences. It did email better than email does email now, albeit without attachments. Used in early US National Science Foundation experiments on scientific community. Linton Freeman had an article on its use in social network analysis. But the big book, which went thru 2 editions, is Hiltz & Turoff, _The Network Nation_. (1978, 1993). As a nice coincidence, there is a conference in Murray & Roxanne's honour at New Jersey Inst of tech, this October. Network Nation was named after the 1973 Craven-Wellman paper, "The Network City", but Paul & I didn't dream of the Internet then. (You could look it up.) Research Fellow Viability of online communities Centre for Research in Social Simulation University of Surrey, UK Salary: up to GBP 30,012 (Level 4, point 5) per annum Summary Applications are invited for a researcher to work with Professor Nigel Gilbert and Dr Camille Roth on a project investigating the determinants of the viability of online communities and networks. The post will involve the collection and analysis of data about online communities such as tagging systems (e.g. Flickr), wiki-based systems (e.g. Wikipedia) and social networking sites (e.g. MySpace). The post will involve describing and analyzing the sustainability and demographics of these communities, both in terms of their population and their knowledge-based content, in order to understand the determinants of their viability or non-viability. An interest in complex systems and/or networks, and programming skills in one or more of scripting languages, java and web programming is essential for this post. A PhD in a quantitative social science, computer science or statistical physics would be helpful. It will involve some travel in Europe. The post is available from 1st October 2007, or as soon as possible thereafter, until 31st January 2010. The post is associated with the European Union Framework 6 project, PATRES (Pattern Resilience), which will develop new methods defining the actions favouring the recovery from perturbations, applicable from ecology to cognitive sciences and sociology. The post will be located in Guildford, Surrey, England, on a modern campus that sits on the hillside leading up to Guildford Cathedral. Ethics in online virtual worlds

I will be interviewing and observing avatars within Second Life as research for my phd. I have been asked by my ethics board to obtain hard copy signature consent from my participants rather than online digital consent. Can anyone direct me to literature pertaining to the practicalities of informed consent in online virtual worlds (mmogs, mmorpgs, second life, etc..) or discuss their own experience with this?
