[apologies for any cross-posting] Call For Papers: 'Media International Australia' Issue no. 126, Feb 2008 'Beyond Broadcasting: TV for the Twenty-First Century' Theme Editors: Graham Meikle and Sherman Young The broadcast era is over. The twentieth-century broadcast model of centralised, one-way transmission of pre-packaged content to large, simultaneous audiences is increasingly challenged and complemented by newer approaches. Content, distribution channels, geographical constraints, production values, business models, regulatory approaches and cultural habits are changing as the new media technologies empower users in unexpected ways and increasingly recast TV as something that audiences create as well as watch. Cheap hardware and software allow anyone to produce original or mashed-up¹ videos. The ubiquity of camera-phones and CCTV redefines reality television. Higher-quality resources bring near-broadcast quality to video blogs and citizen journalism. Affordable editing resources allow creative re-mixes of low-brow soap-operas. And sites such as You Tube demonstrate the online demand for such non-traditional video productions. Such media forms are unlikely to replace television as we know it. But they will displace it. This issue of 'Media International Australia' invites contributions that are able to push forward our thinking about television. The following gives some indication of the range of possible topics, but is not intended to rule out other questions. * What is television in the twenty-first century? Should our definition of television change? If television is considered a cultural habit, what new habits are emerging? * Does television require an industry? How are audiences reinventing themselves as producers? * What are the relationships between free to air, pay TV, public broadcasting and emerging new formats? * What are the impacts of new distribution models, both legal and illegal? * What impacts do the new technologies and habits have on traditional institutions, policies and regulatory frameworks? Papers should be approximately 4-5000 words and comply with the MIA style guide, available at <http://www.emsah.uq.edu.au/mia/index.html>. About the journal: Media International Australia (MIA) publishes new scholarly and applied research on the media, telecommunications, and the cultural industries, and the policy regimes within which they operate (http://www.emsah.uq.edu.au/mia/index.html) MIA was founded by Professor Henry Mayer in 1976. It was published by the Australian Film, Television and Radio School until 1997, when it moved to the Centre for Cultural and Media Policy at Griffith University. At that time, it was merged with the Centre's journal, Culture and Policy. From 2004, it became a publication of the School of EMSAH and the Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies, at The University of Queensland. In 2005 the Henry Mayer Lecture was established in memory of the journal's founder. Broadly inclusive and inter-disciplinary, the journal welcomes the writing of history, theory and analysis, commentary and debate. The one-day event will be held at MIT, and is entitled ?Beyond Broadcast: From Participatory Culture to Participatory Democracy.? It will bring together industry experts, academic leaders, public media professionals, and political activists for panel discussions and focused working groups. Beyond Broadcast 2007 builds on the overwhelming success of last year?s sold-out event, ?Beyond Broadcast 2006: Reinventing Public Media in a Participatory Culture? held at Harvard Law School. Over 350 people took part in-person and online through the virtual world Second Life. Attendees used several unique online tools, including a web-based ?question tool? to probe panelists, a collaborative wiki, live blogging, flickr photo sharing, del.icio.us tagging, and YouTube video production. These tools enabled the conference to practice what it preached, turning the event into a two-way participatory interaction in contrast with many conferences. The tools have been expanded upon this year, already spurring an active conversation on the conference web site, weeks before the event. Henry Jenkins will give the Keynote Address, followed by panel discussions from media makers and policy commentators. Details of these panels are being updated on the conference web site http:// www.beyondbroadcast.net In the second-half of the day, the conference turns its focus to working groups that attendees will help organize. Building on themes coming from the plenary sessions, participants will target specific issues or questions and join efforts with the diverse crowd of others. In the past, these groups have been facilitated by thought leaders in technology, policy, and academia. Many attendees last year expressed their appreciation for this hybrid conference approach in which they had a chance to ?do something before heading home.? There will also be an evening reception, called ?Demos and Drinks,? showcasing groups that are doing exciting work related to conference themes. Registration is only $50 (before February 9), and includes lunch and the evening reception. There is also a special 50% discount for students. MySpace and other public writing spaces

I am working on a research project with a focus on how people use MySpace (or other similar sites) for personal "diary"-type writing. I am wondering why individuals feel compelled to post very personal details about their lives, the purpose it serves for them, and the importance of the interactive nature of these sites. I want to know what it is about these sites that make it seemingly easier to share personal information, both on the site and in general. If anyone knows of any texts that could help me out with my research, I would greatly appreciate it. --Elena Adkins

Best regards, Nanne Call for Papers MASS MEDIA IN CENTRAL/EASTERN EUROPE AND SOUTHERN EUROPE: COMPARATIVE PERSPECTIVES Session organized by the COST A30 Action at the International Media Conference COMPARING MEDIA SYSTEMS: WEST MEETS EAST April 23-25, 2007, Kliczków Castle, Wrocław, Poland MASS MEDIA IN CENTRAL/EASTERN EUROPE AND SOUTHERN EUROPE: COMPARATIVE PERSPECTIVES Hallin and Mancini’s book leaves post-Communist countries out of consideration. In line with the general purpose of the conference, the objective of this panel is to see whether their framework can be applied to Central and Eastern European countries, and in particular to test the hypothesis that their media systems are closest to the polarized-pluralist (“Mediterranean”) media system identified by the two authors. The panel is therefore dedicated to comparative papers and single region and country studies concerning Central and Eastern Europe and Southern Europe. We invite papers comparing ownership patterns of commercial media and the press, public service media, media control and regulation, alternative media, journalism practices, Europeanization vs. nationalism of the public spheres, information society, and other compararive perspectives. Papers on the role of media in post-authoritarian and post-communist transition and democratization are also welcome. (Apologies for cross posting) CALL FOR CHAPTERS Submission Deadline: April 15, 2007 Designing the user experience of future peripatetic users: new HCI design challenges in Space Introduction Travelling to the depths of Space is no longer a privilege of astronauts and scientists. Space Agencies are starting to allow those who have the means to afford it, provided that they fulfil a minimum set of physiological requirements to join the ventures into outer space. At the same time, companies are developing spacecrafts for civilian use and plan huge space stations capable of accommodating thousand of settlers. However, micro-gravity or reduced and enhanced gravity environments strongly influence the way users interact with technology. In other words, what works on earth does not necessarily perform in Space. As the age of space habitation dawns, we must work to find ways to transfer our technological advances on Earth to Outer Space The Overall objective of the Book This book aims to present significant projects carried out in academia, space agencies and in industry regarding the quality of the user experience with interactive systems in Space. The idea is to promote awareness of interdisciplinary work concerning methods and tools for HCI in Space in order to be ready for the future life beyond the terrestrial atmosphere and to share knowledge to develop innovative interactive systems on Earth. A crucial problem when designing HCI for Space systems refers to the validity of data gathering and the realism of user scenarios. Ethnographic on-site studies and evaluation methods show that some problems concerning the user behaviour and environment are only identified when capturing the rich texture of activity being performed in the field. RECCOMENDED TOPICS INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO, THE FOLLOWING: Technological, cultural, political, philosophical, psychological and economic dimensions of future pervasive and interactive communication systems; New challenges in pervasive communication systems in Space: new users and uses, interoperability amongst interfaces, tangible computing, intelligent environments, context awareness, etc; Innovative research approaches for the creation of operationally relevant and realistic future scenarios; Taxonomy of radically new applications; Art expressions (e.g. locative art) in space and patterns for smart & malleable digital content; Advanced interaction models (immersive & intelligent environments, humanising interfaces, haptics, etc); Transferring interaction patterns between usage areas (e.g. games, Space industry, medical, etc); Advanced evaluation techniques for pervasive systems in Space. Participatory Design and other user-centered approaches focused on users' cultural, social, behavioural and ergonomic backgrounds. Challenges of analyzing and designing to support sociability in the Space; Emerging nomadic societies, communities and related socio-cultural trends; Assessment of the Perceived Quality of Experience through ethnographies, or other experimental evaluation techniques.
