Universal Hub http://www.universalhub.com/ is a Boston-based blog that also includes links to quite a few blogs in the Boston metro area. I don't know if all of the blogs in the network are explicitly about the city/town, but at least some are. David Silver suggested our proposed journal be free to all, as JCMC seems to be. But even if online there are costs, which someone has to pay for with either bucks or sweat. I was the initial founder of _City & Community_, and am still on the board. Here are some ideas about the costs, from memory, excluding printing and postage. Managing editor (a grad student): $20K/year Editor (faculty member) teaching reduction -- if you're lucky, donated by your university. If you're not, my university would charge about $20K/year. Room -- will the university give it to you for free or charge rent. Furnishings: ibid Phone, xerox, etc. Figure $5K year. So a free journal is at least $25K a year in cost, and maybe twice that. (Online) Student Development Theory

I'm interested in working with some individuals on exploring how classic student development theory applies to the online world. I'm personally interested in focusing on college-aged students, but I'm sure this will expand to younger/older populations. I think there's something to be said about how online lives impact current theories and potentially there is a new theory waiting to be created about the online life of students. It welcomes papers from scholars who have conducted or are currently involved in conducting research on political participation and have tested (or defined) new measures or have revisited the classical ones in their studies of collective action and its expressions. In particular, the panel will address the following topics: new hypotheses and new theoretical perspectives for explaining current participation and involvement; the adaptation of classical concepts theoretically and methodologically for the study of new democracies; innovative operational definitions of concepts related to participation; typologies that include the traditional as well as "emerging" forms of individualized or collectivistic actions like political consumerism and modes of e-participation, and how the Internet and Internet-based methods can be used to study political participation. Guidelines and deadlines for participants Prospective participants should contact the chairs of the panel in which they are interested, bearing in mind that they will be expected to present a paper and should, therefore, be conducting advanced research in that particular area. Deadline for applications to panels: 31 January 2007. An application to participate should include a short summary of the proposed paper (maximum 250 words). Panel directors will inform applicants as to whether they have been accepted shortly after the deadline for applications has passed. Confirmation of participation by those accepted should be made to them as soon as possible, so that if there are any spaces, people on reserve lists can be offered places. Once accepted, paper givers should complete the GC3 form and send it to their panel chair as an email attachment.
