internet community breakups

I'm doing an independent study this semester on the breakup of Internet communities, which I've called (for the project) Internet community dissolution. I've been able to find plenty of articles on Internet communities and relationships, etc, but I haven't seen any on this topic. How is this topic generally phrased in the lit? I came up with absolutely no results when I tried searching for it in various forms in my library's (pathetic) database. Can anyone point me in the direction of where to look or specific articles on this? Also, while I'm here, are there any articles out there that address the definition and types of internet communities? I could list them all out from my personal experiences, but I'd like to have something published to back up what I say. Thanks! Ellie

Hi everyone, I know this is very short notice, but a couple of us guys are putting a panel submission together for the AoIR conference this year. If you think you may have an idea to present in the panel, please email me offline with a 150-200 word abstract that fits this panel theme below. It hasn't yet been submitted for approval, so we need contributions by next Monday (29 January). PLAYING RELIGION? Blogs and social networking sites are allowing more and more people to publish their thoughts, attitudes and aspirations about religion for the world to see. The result is an explosion of online forums and communities for users to access resources to develop a religious identity. Early research into online religious identity and community has focused on religion online as separate from offline religious practice, allowing critics to suggest that virtual religion leads to the fragmentation and corruption of religion. But how is religious identity actually played out in these new web locations? Do users of blogs and social networking applications come online to construct alternate religious identities, or to seek an identity that coheres with experiences and practices offline? This thread is interesting.. I admit not being very familiar with studies on teen behavior. But a few years ago I came across the following research, which offer interesting surveys of teens: Barbara Schneider and David Stevenson. (2000) The Ambitious Generation. *Observes teens in the 50s and early 90s. Laurence Steinberg. (1997) Beyond the Classroom. *Observes teens in the mid-to-late 80s. Conclusions in their research may not be as relevant when talking about Millennials and how they interact with their parents today, however.. I can't remember how the surveys address child-parent interactions.. This question is for anyone on our list.. maybe to add more context for the thread -- What are some recent/high-quality empirical studies addressing teen behavior? I'm definitely seeing most American teens doing anything to avoid scrutiny but that doesn't mean that their choices don't terrify their parents. Amongst the more protective parents, _anything_ their teen does that is about social status management terrifies the parents. This creates a pretty bad cycle of deception and attempts to hide what's going on, much of which is "normal" teen behavior. One thing that is definitely at play is that there's a LOT more surveillance going on. Your teen-parent dialogue has been pretty much obliterated because parents aren't allowing their teens out without a justification... no justification, no going out. Plus, the phone is there as a constant leash. I am, sadly, finding that some teens engage in some pretty heart- wrenching activities to gain the attention of parents whose focus is elsewhere. This appears to cross SES. In particular, i've seen self- harm (primarily cutting) used for this purpose. Anything to make their parents pay attention to them... These stories kill me. I've also seen plenty of teens who are genuinely angry at their parents (much of this seems to stem from divorce or violence between the parents); their reaction to this can be self-destruction. workshop part 2

Hi Folks, I just wanted to thank everyone who came to our two brainstorming workshops at the Virtual Center for Digital Media last Thursday. We had a great turn out in both sessions - even though we had a griefer at the second session (what an interesting little display of what can happen in a virtual classroom). While both sessions were very different in their discussion of how to mod our existing seminar room, there were some really fabulous ideas. We would like to put these ideas into practice at our next workshop: Wednesday, January 24th 10am PST/SLT (Please note the time change). We will meet at the VCDM (139, 34, 25) for a brief chat and recap and then teleport everyone to our modding location. As an aside - one thing that we gleaned from the workshops (particularly from the second group) is that there is a lot to talk about with respect to virtual learning environments; many questions need to be asked and many things need to be teased out. My name is Tracy Kennedy - I'm a Virtual Research Assistant for the Center for Digital Media at Great Northern Way Campus in Vancouver, British Columbia. Some of you may remember me from last November when I posted an invitation to our Virtual Open House at the Virtual Center for Digital Media where we talked about a new Masters of Digital Media (MDM) program at the Great Northern Way Campus starting in September 2007. The open house was a great success and we are moving forward to put together some innovative ideas & educational tools in Second Life for our 'real life' curriculum. One initiative that we are currently working on is transforming traditional style educational spaces (for example lecture halls and seminar rooms) into student designed collaborative learning environments. We would like to move beyond conventional 'real life' pedagogical delivery modes and encourage students to actively engage and participate in their learning milieu by creating virtual learning spaces & places, and have students learn technical design skills (and modding) at the same time. Having said that, I'd like to invite you to a workshop we are having at the Virtual Center for Digital Media (139, 34, 25) on Thursday January 18th - 1pm PST/SLT (we've added 10am PST/SLT) where we will have a 'brainstorming' session to take the existing seminar room at the Virtual Center for Digital Media, and transform it into a dynamic, creative workspace that is collaboratively designed and built by a group of individuals - the intention is to show that a group of individuals can come together and create their own learning space. The following week (Wed Jan 24th 10am PST/SLT) we will put theory into practice and actually do the modifications and changes to the room to see what the end result might look like. I would like to thank everyone on the existing newsletter team for all their hard work - and to thank the contributors to the current issue - as well as the exec for their support. Like almost all AoIR activity this was developed by a collective of volunteers who put in lots of time and effort. This newsletter is primarily is intended to be a resource for AoIR members and for there to be collective ownership of it, and we hope will it will develop these aims further over time. The first issue focuses on the last conference although this kind of focus will no doubt change in the future. Please let me know if you find this useful and enjoyable, but also feel free to let me know how we could do better next time too! If you would like to contribute to future editions, and if you have comments about the structure, content or anything else please contact me. Speaking autobiographically, and from a distance of 50 years, I suggest that most teens will try to avoid their parents' scrutiny. Terrifying them would only bring more scrutiny. "Where did you go? Interesting Article in the BBC

Perhaps most of you have seen this already, but there was a short article in the BBC about how some computer science teachers at West Nottinghamshire College modded Neverwinter Nights in order to teach students basic math and literacy. I thought it was interesting because of the success they had (or at least claim to have had), but disturbing that they had to teach teenagers how to compute area: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/education/6254989.stm I think Neverwinter had networked multiplayer (I never really played the game); I wonder if they left that in and if it has become a place where social, informal learning occurs as students try to complete tasks...
