Hi Everyone, There has been discussion on both the general AoIR list and the FPTQ list about getting together in Vancouver during 4S. I propose that we all meet after the reception on Thursday night 2 November at the Hyatt Regency. I know that some of the FPTQ people wanted to discuss a workshop proposal and I think this would be an excellent time to begin this conversation (thanks to Anna Martinson for the suggestion that 4S would be a great time for this conversation) as well as more general dialogues about Internet studies. It makes sense to me to meet near the entrance to the reception at 8:30. I look forward to seeing you all soon. web campaigning book & digital scholarship tools

Folks, Steve Schneider and I are happy to announce the publication of our book *Web Campaigning* by MIT Press. The book examines trends in U.S. candidates’ use of the Web between 2000 and 2004, and offers a roadmap to look at how candidates are using the Web in 2006. The analyses center on the inherent tension between the desire of campaigns to maintain control over messages and resources and the generally decentralizing dynamic of Web-based communication. For anyone interested in digital scholarship, the digital supplement we produced to accompany the book might be of interest (see http://mitpress.mit.edu/webcampaigning) Our intent was to develop a new way to represent digital scholarship digitally. The tiddlywiki platform we employed has some interesting affordances, and we’d like feedback on it. The supplement illustrates core concepts discussed in the book and provides screenshots of hundreds of examples of campaign Web pages, with links directly to the archived copies of the Web sites in their hypertextual context. To our knowledge, this is the most extensive scholarly use of materials available in Web archives to date. As this is a new approach to representing scholarship in the digital realm, we’d certainly appreciate hearing what you think of it. In addition to the Web Campaigning Digital Supplement, Meghan Dougherty has developed a new tool called Wayfinder (http://wayfinder.webarchivist.org) that is available as a personalizable entry into the Web Campaigning archive. Wayfinder is an exhibit aid, a teaching tool, and a research tool that provides access to an expertly annotated collection of archived Web artifacts, and opens the collection up to non-expert interpretation. Collection visitors can become curators, creating and sharing their own interpretative lenses among members of the Wayfinder community. Participants leave traces of their own lenses, and challenge others' narratives to generate multiple interpretations. With Wayfinder, visitors can browse and tag the archive to build their own representations and find their way through others' ideas. ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY School of Justice & Social Inquiry College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Assistant Professor The School of Justice & Social Inquiry (SJSI) at Arizona State University invites scholars to apply for one full-time, tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level with employment to begin August, 2007. The requirements for our position include a Ph.D. at the time of appointment in a relevant social science or interdisciplinary field. Candidates must indicate a strong potential for scholarly achievement and successful teaching. We are particularly interested in applicants with research and teaching experience in one or more of the following: environmental justice, immigration, race, ethnicity and gender, and advanced statistical analysis. A strong potential of research funding is desired. We are an interdisciplinary unit focused upon the study of justice and injustice. Our broad emphases are: Economic Justice; Social Justice, Law and Policy; and Cultural Transformations and Justice. SJSI is part of the ASU College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, which is undertaking exciting new initiatives to study global changes, violence, new technologies, population change, education, the environment, and related social issues. How do specific cultural rhetorics differ from, overlap with, and/or engage in dialogue with work Cultural Studies, Digital Studies, Ethnic Studies, African American Studies, Asian American Studies, American Indian Studies, Arab and Middle Eastern American Studies, Chicano/a, Latina/o Studies, Indigenous Studies, Disability Studies, Queer/LGBT Studies, Performance Studies, and Working-Class Studies? What relationship does Cultural Rhetoric Studies have to Rhetoric Studies, Theory, and Pedagogy? to Composition Studies? to American Studies? to Literary Studies? to Digital, Visual, and Material Rhetorics? to Scientific, technical, and professional communication studies? It's only inappropriate because I won't be there :). Seriously, we should do a better job of coordinating AIR@ meetings In addition to 4S (which is sometimes difficult because it is scheduled so close to the AIR conference) enough of us go to ICA, NCA, etc., that we might consider organizing AIR@ meetings, either somewhat formally (like the Media Ecology Association does) or more informally. As an aside, for those doing work on Second Life, I'm trying to organize a last minute panel for ICA. Hello all, This is not one of my areas of expertise but it seems pretty interesting and I am surprised that it hasn't attracted the attention of anyone in AoIR (I am sure that many of you know, but I haven't read anything in the list). Anyway, Reuters, the famous European news agency has decided to "introduce" a complete news bureau into Second Life. The chief "Adam Reuter" and his team are going to cover the news that might be of interest in the virtual community: http://today.reuters.com/news/articlenews.aspx?type=technologynews&storyID=2 006-10-16T201131Z_01_N15302369_RTRUKOC_0_US-MEDIA-SECONDLIFE-REUTERS.xml&WTm odLoc=NewsArt-C2-NextArticle-1 This fact raises many questions but to me it sounds as a great strategy: 1) if Second Life becomes BIG, others would like to follow but Reuters might have become the main "news" distributor by that time in the virtual world. 2) If Second Life does not get that far, Reuters still makes a great publicity out of it in both worlds. In parallel, I also think that many other interesting points emerge from this action. For instance, what are the real implications of it? Is each time the real world more and more alike the offline world? And if so, what does it mean, for instance, is someone ever going to be able to make a profitable life in the "real" world because he/she is famous in the virtual world? HGZ

Open source bibliography database

Hello All, Can anyone recommend a good open-source/free bibliography database programme? It doesn't have to be integrated into Word and all that jazz, just be able to print out bibliographies in a variety of styles, and store all the material in a sensibly accessible database. Ideally it would also have the capability of doing online sources too. I have never used open source, so I would want something relatively easy to install. Reactions to language in CMC

Dear list, I am searching for some discussions online (in interactive formats like message boards, blog comments, forums, listserv archives, etc.) that include opinions/judgments about the language used in CMC - often referred to as "netspeak," "AOLspeak," "chatspeak," "IM language," "internet slang," etc. In particular, threads or posts that contain readers' reactions to media accounts of such phenomena (popularly including terms like "LOL," "BRB," emoticons, punctuation practices, failure to capitalize, etc.). I am interested in what the media accounts themselves say, but I am MORE interested in other people's reactions to what they are reading about (i.e., "People who use emoticons are _______" or "LOL is so _____"). Thanks everyone for the recommendations, they are much appreciated! I will be checking them out (while trying not to use it to distract from real work ;) By the way: as regards jabref - I ran it online for a quick look, and it may have done something funny to my AVG antivirus which gave this message the next time I booted up: "Could not initialise AVG Anti-Virus kernel interface". Looking online I found that it *may* have something to do with using the Java. Also: in my Opera browser all my settings for cookies disappeared... Anyway, I reinstalled AVG etc. and all is fine so no harm done - but just a word of warning to anyone out there.
