Hello qualitative and mixed methods research fans! You might have observed that some of the old concepts of online community are finding new interpretations. The idea of a members-only walled garden was derided not long ago. Now it doesn't seem so crazy to wall off blinking ads, AI bots, bullies, and other online weirdness. Content-focused email newsletters have made a comeback! That is one reason I'm starting a (free) monthly newsletter on Substack: "When the Field is Online." Starting in August of 2024, each issue will focus on a specific topic related to qualitative research and our roles and experiences as researchers. While I use the term online, I intend it as shorthand for any information and communications technology, including apps, that we might use in research. Each issue will include a variety of materials including: - Original essays (not generated by AI!) - Video interviews and podcasts - Curated collections of open access resources - Journal prompts and suggestions for creative activities - Resources for teaching and learning - News from the field: publications and coming events One reason I am sharing this project with you is to ask that when you have a relevant publication or news to share you will let me know so I can include it. Best wishes, Lisa ====================================================== Call for Paper Beyond Play: The Transformative Power of Digital Gaming in a Deeply Mediatized Society (30.09. - 02.10.2024) International conference at the University of Bremen, Germany https://beyondplay2024.org ====================================================== Digital Games and gaming are carriers, accelerators and subjects of change in media culture and society. In this capacity they serve as an interlink between media industries, digital technologies, media cultures, and social practices, making them ideal cases to analyze contemporary transformation processes in the context of (deep) mediatization, digitalization, and datafication. This conference call hence builds on the premise that to understand the significance of digital games and gaming in a deeply mediatized society we need to look beyond play, i.e., the contents of games and the interaction with games alone. We call to go beyond reducing games to mere playing, examining their placement and connection within digital media environments as gamevironments to research how our communicative practices and their contexts transform through games, as well as how these games are reshaped through communicative practices. A perspective that goes beyond play indicates that researching games and gaming also allows for insights into the deepening of the mediatization and datafication of society. It is quite obvious to consider digital gaming a central aspect of the spread of digitalization in virtually all areas of social life: Computer and console games, as well as mobile games, are now an integral part of deeply mediatized lifeworlds across generations. They have become one of the dominant sectors in the media industry in terms of economic relevance and ubiquity. Games and gaming have been catalysts for the emergence of unique media cultures, playing a crucial role in mediatized everyday culture for several generations of players. Game development has become well-established and professionalized, fostering innovative forms of media expression, communication contexts, and peripheral media (e.g., video game journalism, game streaming, fan-fiction, modding). Additionally, under the concept of gamification, principles of gaming and playful elements are increasingly transferred to non-gaming contexts (e.g., health prevention, educational settings). This positions computer games and gaming as a comprehensive subject of research in communication and media studies as well as an indicator for transformation processes in media, culture and society that extend the scope of gaming. ====================================================== We invite submissions that explore the transformative power of digital gaming in deeply mediatized society, how gaming shapes mediatization, digitalization and datafication of society and how games and gaming are conversely shaped by the same processes. We invite conceptual, theoretical and methodological contributions as well as empirical studies from all disciplines. Topics to be addressed include but are not limited to - The transformative power of digital gaming for the proliferation and diffusion of new digital technologies, devices and imaginaries - The transformative power of digital gaming for representation, inclusion and the negotiation as well as transformation of social norms and values - The transformative power of digital gaming for media and communication environments around playing and beyond (e.g., games journalism, game streaming, Let’s plays, reviews and walkthroughs; gamification and language use in non-gaming settings; serious games) - The transformative power of digital gaming for individual and collaborative communicative practices and experiences (e.g., informal learning, co-creation, modding,etc.) - The transformative power of digital gaming in the context of the media manifold (e.g., transmedia storytelling, franchises across multiple platforms and multiple media formats) - Conceptual and methodological challenges and innovations for researching the transformative power of digital gaming in deeply mediatized societies - The impact of digitalization and datafication on digital games and gaming - The transformative power at play in the gaming (related) industries - The transformative power at play in the academic, ethical, and regulatory evaluation of gaming ====================================================== Formats: papers, pre-arranged panels, roundtables This conference welcomes contributions in various formats: - Papers: Normally the paper presenters can expect to have approx. 15 minutes for the presentation and 5-10 minutes for discussion. - Closed panels (120 minutes): we encourage pre-arranged panels. These panels will have 3-4 papers per panel session and probably a critical response. Normally the paper presenters can expect to have approx. 15 minutes for the presentation and 5-10 minutes for discussion. - Roundtables (120 minutes): these are pre-arranged sessions where a group of scholars (usually no more than five) discusses themes/issues of general scholarly interest in front of (and subsequently with) an audience for the duration of a single session. The roundtables should address a topic from an interdisciplinary perspective. While a roundtable can include short (5 minutes) contributions, the aim is to create a lively debate rather than focus on any one presenter. - Poster format: There will be also the possibility to present your work in form of a poster. These posters will be accessible throughout the whole conference and there will a time slot where everybody can present his/her poster. In addition, we are in the middle of organizing the possibility to play the games analyzed and discussed during the conference in a gaming studio which will be accessible throughout the conference. ====================================================== Submission Deadline Abstracts (350-500 words) for all formats should be submitted by email as an anonymized pdf-file no later than 30.06.2024 to beyondplay2024(a)uni-bremen.de. Dear Colleagues, This week on the CaMP anthropology blog, John Postill discusses his book,* The Anthropology of Digital Practices: Dispatches from the Online Culture Wars*, with Katrien Pype. campanthropology.org All the best, Ilana Press blurb: *The Anthropology of Digital Practices* connects for the first time three distinct research areas – digital ethnography, causal ethnography, and media practice theory – to explore how we might track the effects of new media practices in a digital world. It invites media and communication students and scholars to overcome the field’s old aversion to ‘media effects’ and explores the messy, complex, open-ended effects of new media practices in a digital age. Based on long-term ethnographic research and drawing from recent advances in the study of causality and ethnography, this book tells the ‘formation story’ of the anti-woke movement through a series of critical media events. It argues that digital media practices (e.g. podcasting, YouTubing, tweeting, commenting, broadcasting) will have ‘formative’ effects on an emerging social world at different points in time. One important task of the digital ethnographer is precisely to distinguish between the formative and non-formative effects of specific media practices. This book makes three contributions to our understanding of media practices in the digital era, namely a theoretical, methodological, and empirical contribution. Theoretically, it furthers the ‘practice turn’ in media and communication studies by engaging with the latest thinking on causality and ethnography. Methodologically, it serves as a compelling, up-to-date guide to doing digital ethnography, with special reference to the study of digitally mediated practices. Empirically, it is the first book-length study of the anti-woke movement, a major actor in the ‘culture wars’ currently being fought across the Western world. With its accessible language and rich case studies, *The Anthropology of Digital Practices* will make an ideal supplementary textbook for a range of undergraduate and graduate courses in research methods, digital ethnography/anthropology, and digital activism.

Call for Papers NORMalize at RecSys: The 2nd Workshop for Normative Thinking and Design in Recommender Systems

Dear all, In the fall of this year, we are organizing the second edition edition of NORMalize. This workshop will be part of the ACM conference on Recommender Systems, to be held in Bari, Italy, October 14-18. We are welcoming papers in different formats (extended abstracts, short, long) that address ideas, challenges, new theoretical ideas and technical contributions, all in the context of normative thinking and design and recommender systems. Recommender systems are used in a many different domains, from recommending recipes to song playlists. They increasingly act as "gatekeepers" to what users are exposed to online. Therefore it is important that we, as designers of these systems, think about the norms and values appropriate to the domain when designing and evaluating these recommender systems, such that they have a positive impact on society. *** Last Call for Demo and Poster Submissions *** 12th IEEE International Conference on Cloud Engineering (IC2E) September 24-27, 2024, 5* Aliathon Resort, Paphos, Cyprus https://conferences.computer.org/IC2E/2024/, The IEEE International Conference on Cloud Engineering (IC2E) is a premier conference on Cloud Computing, which in the last two decades has significantly changed the way IT resources are consumed. ###IMPORTANT DATES### * Demo and poster submission deadline: June 23, 2024 (AoE) * Author notification: July 15, 2024 * Camera-ready due: August 2, 2024 ###TOPICS OF INTEREST### IC2E 2024 invites submissions of high-quality demo and poster papers describing all aspects of cloud engineering. Some representative topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Cloud management and engineering, from single (micro-)services to complete system landscapes. * Cloud applications, ranging from the Internet of Things (IoT) over Big Data to Machine Learning. * Cloud systems, including storage, data distribution, and serverless computing. * Cloud security and privacy concerns on all levels of the Cloud stack. * Fog and Edge Computing, and all other system types in the Cloud-Edge Compute Continuum. * Everything as a Service. * Non-technical aspects of Cloud Computing, e.g., cloud governance or cloud economics. ### SUBMISSION ### Authors must submit poster/demo papers in PDF at EasyChair, https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=ic2e2024, upon selecting the Posters/Demos Track option. Papers should use the IEEE Manuscript Template for Conference Proceedings for formatting. LaTeX users must use \documentclass[10pt,conference]{IEEEtran}, without including the compsoc or compsocconf options. Poster and demo papers may not exceed 2 double-column pages and should be single-blind. Depending on the paper type, the paper title should start with either "Demo:" or "Poster:". ### REVIEW PROCESS AND PUBLICATION ### All submitted papers will be peer-reviewed based on technical merit, novelty, and potential to stimulate interesting discussions at the conference, as well as alignment with the conference theme. The papers must contain original ideas and must not have been published or under review elsewhere, except for demo papers which may showcase previously published systems. In this case, authors must clearly state this and include the original publication as part of their submission.
