I'd be against censoring and right now can't see the point of the kind of limiting that's being suggested in terms of number of posts permitted. Won't classification of what's on or off topic work itself out? Ways of addressing colleagues seems already to be written into the charter, though admittedlly respectful speech is hard to define. Could there be a sysstem of voting on sanctioned offenders? I don't know. The search for a faculty member in human-computer interaction at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is open and ongoing (since last February). Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute School of Humanities and Social Sciences Department of Language, Literature and Communication Tenure Track Faculty Position (Rank Open) in Human-Computer Interaction The Department of Language, Literature and Communication seeks a strong scholar/researcher in human-computer interaction. We will consider candidates in any area of HCI; however, we are especially interested in candidates whose research interests are in the areas of social computing, mobile/ubiquitous computing, or user-centered design, and who implement systems or perform rigorous laboratory or field studies as part of their research approach. Candidates are expected to develop a substantial program of research leading to peer-reviewed publication and external funding. A junior candidate should show evidence of strong promise in teaching and scholarship and a senior candidate should have a strong record in teaching and scholarship. Teaching opportunities will be at the undergraduate and graduate level with the typical teaching load set at two courses per semester. Desirable teaching expertise includes interface prototyping and implementation, HCI usability and evaluation techniques, and design methodology. The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary faculty conducting state-of-the-art research on communication in technologically mediated contexts in areas such as human-computer interaction, communication studies, digital rhetoric, technical communication, media studies, and graphic design. The department has just added a new M.S. in Human Computer Interaction to a program portfolio that includes one of the top-ranked Ph.D.s in Communication and Rhetoric and a joint B.S. in Electronic Media, Arts, and Communication. The department also makes substantial contributions to teaching in a B.S. and M.S. in Information Technology and has a joint B.S. in game studies under development. Faculty and students have access to the Social and Behavioral Laboratory (http://www.sbrl.rpi.edu) and other Institute research facilities. Rensselaer is a U.S. News and World Report top-50 university with approximately 5000 undergraduate and 2500 graduate students. It is located in the emerging "Tech Valley" region of the Hudson River Valley with New York City, Boston, and Montreal only a few hours away. Are you proud that you made them? I don't see why it is either irrelevant or psuedoscientific to say that young people whose training and expertise is in designing computer systems are not as likely to be as savvy about communication or social scientific research methods or as well attuned to how those affect their own sites as people who specialize in those topics and skills. As Ive said on last.fm, I don't think it makes sense for the developers to also be in charge of user-assessment and communication with users. Those are different skill sets. In my discussions with the last.fm staff their status as developers rather than social scientists or PR people is a point they themselves make in defense of their communicative shortcomings. I think one of the critical problems in the future of Web2 sites is how well those who are designing them will be able to successfully understand what makes their users want to participate, how their users use the sites, and how they can best interact with their users. I would expect people who have more life experience and who specialize in understanding people and communication to be better at that. Given my own age and background, I would not expect others to think I'd be great at writing code that will capture the spirit of youth, nor would I take it as an insult if people noticed that about me. After 7 years I applied for a position as a lab technician for a notable scientist. I was rejected. I attended one of his lectures and took notes. I then sent those to him and was hired. I served this scientist for many years and on occasion acted as his valet. Although he was condescending and haughty, I learned from him. I might add that during my association with him I was able to do some of my own investigations and was lucky enough to discover some basic principles in electro-magnetism. Facebook protests

I have a Facebook account. The feeds are being sent to others who are designated as being a 'friend', as opposed to everyone who might be a member of a larger user group (i.e., University of Illinois). Individual users control this designation by choosing to accept or decline an invitation to be someone's friend. What's interesting is that the people who seem to be joining the protest groups are those who have a large number of friends (200-plus), and also those who might have accepted invitations to be friends when the other person was an acquaintance of sorts. The number of friends one has is a status symbol for some students with Facebook accounts. This information has come out in conversations with undergrad students here on campus who have accounts. I get invitations to be friends with others here at the university who do not know me, but have heard about me from one of their friends, teachers, or other connections here on campus. It also appears this practice is one that is feeding feelings related to Facebook invading a person's privacy, as opposed to reconizing this software has been enabling this process all along through search and hyperlink functions. /Gail ***************************** Gail D. It turns out that I was only partly wrong. NIH as of May 2, 2005 http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/notice-files/NOT-OD-05-022.html While this has been stated as a request NIH has made contracts contingent on agreement with the policy.
