CALL FOR CHAPTERS Submission Deadline: April 15, 2007 Designing the user experience of future peripatetic users: new HCI design challenges in Space A book edited by Dr. Anxo Cereijo Roibás, University of Brighton; Loredana Bessone, ESA and Dr. Patricia.M.Jones, NASA Introduction: Travelling to the depths of Space is no longer a privilege of astronauts and scientists. Space Agencies are starting to allow those who have the means to afford it, provided that they fulfil a minimum set of physiological requirements to join the ventures into outer space. At the same time, companies are developing spacecrafts for civilian use and plan huge space stations capable of accommodating thousand of settlers. However, micro-gravity or reduced and enhanced gravity environments strongly influence the way users interact with technology. In other words, what works on earth does not necessarily perform in Space. As the age of space habitation dawns, we must work to find ways to transfer our technological advances on Earth to Outer Space The Overall objective of the Book: This book aims to present significant projects carried out in academia, space agencies and in industry regarding the quality of the user experience with interactive systems in Space. The idea is to promote awareness of interdisciplinary work concerning methods and tools for HCI in Space in order to be ready for the future life beyond the terrestrial atmosphere and to share knowledge to develop innovative interactive systems on Earth. A crucial problem when designing HCI for Space systems refers to the validity of data gathering and the realism of user scenarios. Ethnographic on-site studies and evaluation methods show that some problems concerning the user behaviour and environment are only identified when capturing the rich texture of activity being performed in the field. The Target Audience: Educators, and Researchers in HCI, managers of HCI projects working in Space and mobile industry (telecom companies, device manufacturers, service providers, game designers, etc.); industrial designers; new media trends sociologists; new media journalists; human factors practitioners; interface evaluators, information architects, designers and testers. The book is intended to provide valuable material to be used for research and teaching purposes (in any curricula including communication and information systems in its set of disciplines). This book is also intended to be useful for designers and engineers that need concrete materials to understand the user experiences in social practices and to evaluate the applications used and combined. RECCOMENDED TOPICS INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO, THE FOLLOWING: Technological, cultural, political, philosophical, psychological and economic dimensions of future pervasive and interactive communication systems; New challenges in pervasive communication systems in Space: new users and uses, interoperability amongst interfaces, tangible computing, intelligent environments, context awareness, etc; Innovative research approaches for the creation of operationally relevant and realistic future scenarios; Taxonomy of radically new applications; Art expressions (e.g. locative art) in space and patterns for smart & malleable digital content; Advanced interaction models (immersive & intelligent environments, humanising interfaces, haptics, etc); Transferring interaction patterns between usage areas (e.g. games, Space industry, medical, etc); Advanced evaluation techniques for pervasive systems in Space. Participatory Design and other user-centered approaches focused on users' cultural, social, behavioural and ergonomic backgrounds. Challenges of analyzing and designing to support sociability in the Space; Emerging nomadic societies, communities and related socio-cultural trends; Assessment of the Perceived Quality of Experience through ethnographies, or other experimental evaluation techniques. Novel methodologies for services design. SUBMISSION PROCEDURE Authors are invited to submit on or before December 1, 2006, a 2-5 page manuscript proposal clearly explaining the mission and topic of the proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by January 15, 2007 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter organizational guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by April 15, 2007. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. The book is scheduled to be published by Idea Group Inc., www.idea-group.com, publisher of the Idea Group Publishing, Information Science Publishing, IRM Press, CyberTech Publishing and Idea Group reference imprints. There is a similar thing when looking at the telephone directories on mobile phones. The mean number of entries is often huge. For teens it can be over 100. However, when you ask how many have been contacted in the past week, the number is usually under 10. The US General Social Survey claims the average American has slightly more than 2 people they discuss important matters with. Our Connected Lives and Pew Strength of Ties studies show somewhat higher numbers (see Hogan, Carrasco & Wellman on our website). But still reckoned by the dozen (or two). When the inevitable reporter calls, how do I reconcile these numbers with the 100-200 or so that folks on this list are saying are Facebook "friends". Does anyone have a distribution of the # of friends per Facebook account: mean, median, mode, quartiles, ranges would be nice too. I understand that they are young and that they are computer scientists. I am not really impressed with these protests at all, these are (mostly?) undergrads we are talking about. Martin, I too love what last.fm is doing, that's why it frustrates me no end to see them drop this ball. I understand that they are young and that they are computer scientists. To their credit, they've engaged in discussion about these issues that I've raised through that site. I know that they are aware that their communication with users could be better, though I'm not sure they're aware that their understandings of them could be improved. I don't know their business model, but I can't believe that any business founded on users voluntarily giving over tons of data and getting personally invested in its site would not function best with systematic study of its users (especially prior to implimenting big changes) and continuous proactive systematic communication with users. Yes -- their users will socially shape the baby they dreamed up in their dorm room, and they need to understand what's going on that they did not envision or control and how to make the most of it. Another thought on that is that it is very reminiscent of fandom dynamics where fans are so into a text and then a character gets killed off and they're furious that this happened to THEIR story. But I think it's more significant in this context where social networks are becoming technologically-dependent. Short version: I believe last.fm would make more money with social scientists/people who specialize in communicating with users on staff and am sad that I've failed so far in my efforts to convince them that it is an investment in the best interest of their long-term financial well being rather than a cost they are too small to afford. I have spent the last hour reading these threads. This low stakes dialogue is replete with opportunities for investigation. It is worthy of AOIR and its brain power. Ellis Godard's dissertation contains a phrase which has application (paraphrase) "We are all half blind on the Internet." The illusion of privacy here seems to be a longing to be anonymous in a crowd; a longing to be recognized without intimacy. The protest seems to come from having this illusion discredited. Also, I have observed that young people tend to confuse acquaintantship with friendship. Being half blind, this confusion is exaggerated. To build on what Nicole writes, and also what I think Mark touched on earlier, I think there is another issue overlaying user frustration with the Facebook changes in that there's still not enough nuance in the "friend" designation. In the past, "friends" could come to your page as often as they want and comb it for whatever sort of minutiae interests them. For your boyfriend, girlfriend or best friend, that might mean daily visits, frequent perusals of your list of friends and wall posts. But for your Chem. lab partner from last year, that might mean stopping by once a month, or right after running into you at a party. But now, everyone in your network is forced to interact with any new information you post in the same way. And you as the user have only one basic friend designation. You can give more information ("worked together" vs. "hooked up"), you can create a more limited profile to share with certain people, but you're still relatively limited in how you can designate friends. Some of my former students have been calling the changes "stalkerish," but really they're almost the inverse of that -- the newsfeeds assume that everyone in your network has the same level of interest in the details of your life that a stalker might, and foists those details upon them regardless. At the root, I think it's because online social networks are so much more of a blunt instrument when compared to the spoken and unspoken nuances of offline social networks. Which seems to be the case, as this quote from the article suggests: "Ms. Deitch said Facebook's feedback from users comes in the form of emails to its customer-service email address, which the company's product-development team reviews weekly. But the company typically doesn't solicit feedback by showing features to users before launching them." Because these social network sites are built on user-supplied content, users feel more ownership over the site as a whole (compared to, say, a news portal or e-commerce site). It may be that the reaction to this change might prompt deeper, better user research on the part of these sites (which I agree is needed). Following up on the earlier conversation: My sense from speaking with students is that they dislike the feature not because it is pulling already available information, but because it is displaying profile changes that otherwise would be hard to identify. If I have 150 friends on the site, I won't typically notice when someone de-friends me. But this feature puts this info in my face, so to speak. As the old saying goes: there are some things better left unsaid. This feature is articulating information we don't necessarily want to hear.
