I am afraid formulating the question as "is on line education effective" or "more/les effective than F2F education" is an unfortunate simplification. Irrespective of the milieu where they take place, education or instruction can be more or less effective depending on a variety of factors, including among others instructors and learners' talents, willingness, readiness, attraction for the subject, interaction, etc. in addition to the material constraints and particular circumstances of the participants. After a great deal of effort I was able to find a document that is titled : "AIR-1 List Etiquette" It can be found at: http://www.aoir.org/?q=node/5 Several observations: I could not find it when I logged in as an AOIR member. I received the following message despite clearly being logged in. "Access denied You are not authorized to access this page." When searching for the subject without logging in I was able to access the document. Secondly, It is not contained in the AIR-1 archives via a search "list etiquette" Third, the 2 sentences dealing with the subject contains words that are subject to personal interpretation, with the exception of the matter of forwarding personal communications to AIR-1. I suggest the ethics committee attempt to clarify the arguable terms. The adherence to the policy be a condition of acceptance to the list. Make the rules easily available and not ambiguous. It is my assumption that "access denied" is a programming issue and is not necessarily one that occurs for all members and no negative implications are implied. proposal for an AoIR Newsletter

Dear AoIR colleagues I'd like to float the idea of developing an AoIR newsletter. This venture would need to be a team effort and this email is primarily intended to try and sound out support for the idea, and to find out if anyone is interested in working on this. As with all AoIR activity this would be volunteer labour with the attraction of being a great experience. If you want to find out more about AoIR activities, people, resources and related events/work/issues, or if you are an expert in these areas already, this would be a great opportunity to share and develop skills, and enhance or make new connections, and I'm hoping it would also be enjoyable. I'd like to produce two issues, post them to the list, and see what the feedback is. I've got ideas for structure, content, process and resources which I'm happy to discuss further with anyone interested in helping put this together. At this point I'm looking for people from the AoIR membership to act as an editorial team for the newsletter, to input ideas for its structure and content, and to collate AoIR news - in this first and (experimental) instance this would be for 2 newsletters. The main objective is to provide something of value to AoIR, through consolidating communication and links across AoIR, and bringing together information of interest. At this point another important aim is to establish if a newsletter would in fact be useful, and what kind of format, shape and delivery would best serve AoIR - I'm approaching that question by trying it out. If you would be interested helping plan this, and in making up an editorial team, to write and edit a newsletter, and collate AoIR activity, please let me know as soon as possible, and I'll coordinate efforts, both to get an AoIR newsletter together, and to evaluate the process for the first 2 editions. In terms of time lines I'm hoping to get a first issue out soon - this autumn if at all possible. Positions in New Media at Quinnipiac

Hi! There have been bunch notes out on the list recruiting faculty. I joined the faculty at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut earlier this year. I was looking for an opportunity to move from an Research 1 to a school that balances research with a dedication to teaching. Admittedly, I've only been here for a little while, but I've been very impressed with what I've seen. We have a great group of students, and despite being a large "small" school (we have the largest undergraduate program in the state, I believe), class sizes remain small, and support of faculty for teaching and research is excellent. Perhaps best of all, there is a strong entrepreneurial spirit on the campus, and the university is attracting some outstanding faculty. I suspect that if you haven't heard of Quinnipiac in the past, that will be changing. The School of Communication is hiring four tenure-track faculty this year, and will be continuing to add faculty in the coming years. Applicants should be able to work in a variety of production settings including field, studio and/or on-line, working with students to create entertainment and/or public affairs programming and media products that can be distributed across a variety of media platforms. As with most applications of CMC, the question is not really whether programs are effective or cost effective, but how to do it best anyway. Sloan-C supported a lot of work in the US with the aim of proving that teaching and learning was possible via asynchronous learning (ALN for asynchronous learning networks), and then to see about cost effectiveness. In general, most would agree about the former, but also that it is not (yet?) a cost saving. Indeed, many wonder why educational institutions should be trying to make a cheaper model of education. The flip side is why should educational institutions be so expensive and thus exclude others. Research -- lots of journals, from the Journal of Asynchronous Learning Networks to many Education journals, and work in CMC journals. Plus, Sloan-C reports, National School Board and department of education reports. Main effectiveness reference is the No Significant Difference work (http:// www.nosignificantdifference.org/) showing no difference in learning outcomes online vs off. Hence it is 'as good as' ftf/offline. More subtle effectiveness work points out the greater reach of online, advantages for those with different learning styles (e.g., the reflexivity possible in online venues, and ability to review materials), opportunities to be embedded in local work and community, and the variety of mediated options that increase variety of educational means. There are several notable large scale failures of programs at the university level (e.g., UK eU), but many success stories at the program/degree level.
