Call for Essays Play and Pedagogy: Video Games and Writing Instruction The editors of Play and Pedagogy: Video Games and Writing Instruction are seeking 15-25 page contributions that consider the multiple ways that digital gaming technologies, including console games, computer games, and massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs), can be used for composition instruction as objects or locations of inquiry and as modes of production. We invite both works that theorize games and gaming as compositional spaces and cases that discuss successful classroom practices that engage games in writing courses at the graduate and undergraduate level. Proposals should be submitted by August 15, 2006. Upon recommendation by the collection editors, authors will be asked to submit finished articles by January 15, 2007. Games and gaming as social experience are starting to be explored in depth through a variety of collections and special journal issues, but relatively little has been written about games and composition instruction (although much has recently been published on games and learning). The goal of this collection is to collect and synthesize theory, research, and practices of games and gaming as specifically applied to composition instruction. As such, the editors are interested in qualitative, theoretical, and/or rhetorical research as well as teaching case studies with topics that might address (but are not limited to) the following: *Empirical studies of games/gaming as they relate to composition practices *Historical studies of the evolution of games in teaching and learning, particularly as focused on composition theory-based arguments for the use of games/gaming in composition studies *Case studies of successes and non-successes of pedagogical implementations of games and gaming *Theorizations that address gaming as writing/composing practice using rhetorical, genre, social, or discourse theories *Game-based ethnographic work that addresses identity formation or other issues important to composition pedagogy *Examinations of the implications of gaming pedagogy as effective practices for ESL or nontraditional students Queries about submissions can be directed to any of the editors: Douglas Eyman eymandou(a)msu.edu Andréa Davis davisa28(a)msu.edu Stewart Whittemore whittem2(a)msu.edu Proposals should be sent via email (by August 15, 2006) to Douglas Eyman at eymandou(a)msu.edu. Dear All, I'd definitely agree with what you've posted Yanuar, the software should only be thought of as assisting the process (i.e. ease of storage and retrieval) it still relies on the researchers own skill in developing and applying the coding frame. I'm currently using MAXqda2(see http://www.maxqda.com/ for the 30 day demo version). It's not terribly cheap but I found it easier to pick up than Nvivo, and have used it for coding interviews, learning journals, and even project documentation. It is also very easy to display e.g. "all segments coded against x", or "all segments coded against x for subject a" etc and many other variations which were sometimes problematic in Nvivo. I think it's worth checking out. I'd be interested to hear more about the framing theory mentioned, I don't think I've come across it before. Hello all, I would also suggest NVivo, which is relatively easy to figure out, though it has some user interface issues that are annoying. That said, however, I was once in a jam with no access to qualitative software at all. I used the "open sort" method, which can be done very well with a few tools: 1. post it notes 2. pens 3. a really big wall 4. no wind I coded the transcripts from interviews this way with a pile of the transcripts on my lap, and a ready post-it note, on which I scribbled a new theme every time it came up. Eventually, you find yourself repeating....yourself. And then you just start arranging and re-arranging the post its into over-arching themes. This method works very well with groups as well, and I employ it regularly in my work at a Web agency (we frequently have to organize large amounts of technical requirements and map those back to user research we have done). And about grounded theory, well, I think that person may have been talking about poor uses of grounded theory. One should only employ this is one is looking to develop an actual theory about, say, technical requirements gathering. I could conceive of a theory like, "determinants of technical requirements gathering include; socio-political context; timing; and technical architecture" or something. But lord knows that this term has been abused because people think they are using grounded theory if they "ground" their work in "theory. Dear All I am currently starting my PhD in the area of CMC. I am especially interested in the phenomenon of empathy and how it manifests in online communication. In my current study, I investigate message postings from a (quite emotional) discussion board and through grounded theory came up with a detailed categorisation scheme of the content. Apart from the basic statistics with the codings, I would like to relate the patterns I found in the online discussion board to the phenomenon of empathy in offline communication. However, I struggle with the approach I should take. I have read about different kinds of qualitative analysis (like thematic analysis, discourse analysis and some parts of content analysis...) but I am not sure how exactly to go about it. Does anybody have experience with this kind of analysis (relation of coding results to general characteristics of a phenomenon like empathy) or can recommend literature that might help me? It would not be a problem to write about it but I am searching for a more "prescribed procedure". Does anybody know of similar studies? I also thought about using word frequencies and concordances for the analysis - does anybody have any recommendation concerning this? Any help would be greatly appreciated! The whole isn't. It isn't simply that a collective's "identity" is dubious; in much of modern life, boundary conditions for "collective" are, too. -eg
