Reading 'The Daily' -- the statscan report -- rather than the media account, it seems to me there are a number of places where the write-up is causing confusion. Two things in particular stand out -- the use of "the day" appears to mean literally the one day asked about, not a general measure of daily activity. Respondents filled out a diary for on 24 hour period. However, to me the term 'day' means daylight/9-5 hours, and hence the report is confusing (although if you look at the questionnaire it is quite clearly the 24 hour period). The other thing is that the report implies causality, e.g., "Internet use takes away from the time that its heavy users devote to both family life and chores around the house" -- but there is no comparison of before and after, so the statement about 'taking away from' is unsubstantiated. (In my quick look at the questions, there seems to be only one question that asks about prior experience -- asking about whether people feel more rushed now than 5 years ago). It's a lesson on how to write clearly and not to go beyond the interpretations possible from the data collected. In fact, we have earlier threads here, I believe, about whether citations to web sites should be by site, or by individual page, or some other indicator. I think what is most important about a citation is findability. So, generally, if I can find the resource at a URL, I'll list the URL. But given the capriciousness of URLs, more information is often needed as a "backup," if this original citation fails. For net resources I *expect* are likely to change, I have often considered citing a copy of the page archived by the Internet Archive, or my archived copy of the page. Or, alternatively, provide a link to a copy of the bibliography that can be automatically or manually updated. I was just listening to Negroponte talking about the OLPC at the TED Talks back in February and he said to my astonishment, "When you see that kind of thing [referring to favourable reports of trials of conventional laptops after 3.5 years in Maine], this is not something you have to test - the days of pilot projects are over. When people say 'well we'd like to do three or four thousand in our country to see how it works' - screw you. Go to the back of the line - someone else will do it and then when you figure out that this works you can join as well." I know that he has now resigned as chair of the Media Lab to run the OLPC project and he is understandably passionate about it but to say that because of a few small-scale pilots of different kinds in different developed and developing world countries, there can be no doubt his radically different design of laptop will work in any given country is just irresponsible. I only hope this is merely hyperbole on his part and not typical of the attitude of the whole organization. One other caution for going to Australia. I travel with blood pressue, diabetes and headache meds. A junior officer of Australian immigration at the Sydney airport was the only perso/place (out of 40ish countries) that wanted to see my doctors' prescription letters. Which I didn't have. Fortunately, a supervisor told her to forget about it, or otherwise, I might have blown a gasket in Oz. (This in 2002.)
