I'm about to be away from my home computer for a few days and have only spotty internet access, and before I leave I think it might be useful to post here to let everyone know that, for a number of reasons, there is a size limit on air-l posts. Many people in the past several days have greatly exceeded the limit, and posts larger than 10 KB automatically are held for approval rather than being directly posted to air-l. This means that messages sent in HTML or other formats than plain text may end up languishing for hours, or in some cases, even a day, before I see them and can let posters know what the problem is. Excessively large posts are rejected, and the poster receives the following message: "If your message was rejected for length because you included most or all of an air-l digest in a response, please edit the excerpted material and re-send your post. If it was overly long because it was posted in HTML or MIME, then please try not to post in HTML/MIME - it messes up the digest version of AIR-L and our web archive. This is not a rejection of your posting, only its format, so please re-post in plain text. Instructions for almost all e-mail programs can be found at http://www.expita.com/nomime.html. "Another reason for not using HTML or MIME is that such postings tend to be inordinately large. We don't accept postings larger than 10 KB. If you have information in excess of that limit, a link to a relevant web page is often a better option." Thank you everyone for your replies on the topic of measuring time using the Internet. I am carrying out a project comparing online (email) mentoring with traditional face-to-face mentoring for new graduate midwives and nurses. One of the elements I want to look at is time, comparing the time of face-to-face meetings with the amount of time spent reading and replying to emails. Statistics Canada says it found that heavy Net users spent less time to socializing with their spouse or partner, or their children and friends. I've cited a few Podcasts and I agree it would be useful to have an agreed approach but I'd suggest that whilst Podcasts are usually downloaded via an aggregator (such as iTunes or juice) the file will not stay in the xml feed for long and for citation you'd need to link to the actual mp3 file. My problem is that the electronic resource in question is not a web page but a podcast. It is in this case as likely to be permanently available as a web page would be but in other cases with podcasts the only way to provide a URL would be to open the RSS feed and look for the address of the MP3 file there and some podcasts don't retain complete archives (does archive.org try to archive all old podcasts?). statscan study

Folks, It's bad enough when reporters and blogs comment on press releases, but I'd hope that participants in the Assoc of Internet RESEARCHERS list would RTFS itself before posting comments on this list. Not the 1/2 page newspaper report, and not even the few-page statscan media summary. Especially as the report is available for free download at www.statscan.ca Having said that, I'll make the following points (and have made them in 2 media interviewers already: a) It's not my (or NetLab's) study, but a lead researcher asked me to be available yesterday for media commentary. (First I heard of the study, btw, so I had to do some quick reading). b) correlation NE causality. c) internet pop is demographically different than non-users (altho study does use MCA to control for some differences). I would have liked to have seen an apples-apples comparison: e.g., middle-aged married men with young kids. THis may explain some of the lesser housework results. d) Heavy users are defined as TWO (not 1) hours in the past 24 hours. (i.e., a previous poster got this wrong.) e) Statscan used standard time-budget / time-use methods, including asking for primary and secondary activities (i.e., schmoozing with spouse while net surfing). f) I agree that there is a tilt towards ignoring the socializing part of internet use, altho towards the end, the authors do say that the largest chunk of use is email, IM, chat, etc. g) But as one reporter (www.globeandmail.com) just asked me, is the nature of online socializing similar to F2F. h) There may be a Zen half-full / half-empty effect. For example, heavy users do an adjusted 33 minutes less of housework and somewhat less HH socializing. OTOH, our Connected Lives paper shows that "only" 36% of the folks we studied have any stress about their spousal unit being online too much (and most of this that stress is minor). So is it the similarity or the difference that should be emphasized. I expect Tracy Kennedy will use CL data to delve into this more in the next year. But please RTFS before commenting. When I took my own advice, and ReRTFS, I realized that the heavy user cutoff point was one hour (as someone posted), and not two. Also, what none of us noted, is their three-way categorizing problably underestimates heavy user effects -- if it had been 2 or 4 hours/day instead of 1. (remember this is home use). There are also boundary problems inevitable with an categorizing scheme (as compared to regression): 59 minutes equals lite use, while 61 minutes equals heavy use. Apologies and goodnite. Hi Everyone, As job season approaches, it's time for me to make an annual announcement: Since 1999, I have been maintaining a collection of web pages that provides links to useful resources for people on the academic job market and junior scholars. It is mainly geared toward critical communication studies but some resources will be more broadly useful to people who work in other fields. I am always looking for good suggestions for material to add to the site, and as you'll see, I have used it to archive some material that has been circulated in other fora.
