If you're looking to propose a workshop for the conference, please email me your proposal by 31 March... Below is the call for pre-conference workshop proposals, from the AoIR 2006 CFP: PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS Prior to the conference, there will be a limited number of pre-conference workshops which will provide participants with in-depth, hands-on and/or creative opportunities. We invite proposals for these pre-conference workshops. Local presenters are encouraged to propose workshops that will invite visiting researchers into their labs or studios or locales. Proposals should be no more than 1000 words, and should clearly outline the purpose, methodology, structure, costs, equipment and minimal attendance required, as well as explaining its relevance to the conference as a whole. Proposals will be accepted if they demonstrate that the workshop will add significantly to the overall program in terms of thematic depth, hands on experience, or local opportunities for scholarly or artistic connections. Nevertheless, despite a large investment for developing the infrastructure and the provision of access at affordable prices, the demand for broadband has not increased as expected in many countries around the globe. The slow rate of broadband adoption can be 'supply constrained' in the developing world where countries are lagging behind in infrastructure development but 'demand constrained' in countries where high-speed access is made available to the majority of the population. Broadband penetration differs greatly across countries; for example, according to recent Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) statistics some countries such as South Korea (25.5 subscribers per 100 inhabitants) and The Netherlands (22.5 subscribers per 100 inhabitants) have reached steady state, whilst others such as Greece (0.8 subscribers per 100 inhabitants) and Mexico (1.0 subscribers per 100 inhabitants) represent much lower levels of penetration (OECD 2005). This means that in order to enhance the homogenous adoption and use of broadband and to reduce the digital divide, it is essential to focus on understanding both macro and micro level factors influencing the deployment and use of broadband. OBJECTIVES The overall mission of the book is to provide an understanding of the global diffusion of broadband. Specifically it will focus on following key objectives: * To provide understanding of macro and micro level factors affecting broadband adoption from both developing and developed nation perspective. * To offer cross-country analysis of broadband policy making and extract success factors that can be applied in various geographical settings * To provide an understanding of diversity of broadband use, and its impact on e-commerce, e-business, e-government and household consumer. * To provide implications for practice and policy that may encourage consumer and SMEs adoption and use of broadband. Academics/researchers/practitioners are invited to submit their work that address issues related with adoption and diffusion of broadband Internet and its usage and impacts on content providers, application developers, e-commerce, e-business, e-health, e-government, education, employment and work, household consumers, etc. AUDIENCE The target audience of this book is readers who wish to learn how to encourage adoption of broadband and other emerging telecommunication technologies and applications and also researchers who are interested in the diffusion of technologies such as broadband. Therefore, the target audience includes Broadband Service Providers, Policy Makers, Academics/Researchers, Students of IS and IT Management. English as a journal language

FWIW, I offer the following ongoing story: I've been invited to a Latin language country to spend 2 days this June teaching how to write "international" journal articles. I was surprised at first. I was told that the scholars in this country have basically been writing reports for the government and NGOs, or for their own journals -- not much refereeing. So it appears that it is not the language I am teaching, but how to write for journals in the North American traditions. (Note "s" at the end of the word). And while I have the floor, an apology to the guy whose name I spelled wrongly the other day. It wasn't that I was putting him down, as he too-quickly charged, it is that when I respond to the digest, other names are not easily visible to me. I did want to respond to misleading information that was being put out about AOIR in Toronto, but I also had "Connected Lives" page proofs due that day (all 50 pp!), the phone was ringing (archaic instrument that I keep around), and I was fighting the clock. Time stress is the explanation, and not an effort to put down by sloppy spelling. When I put some one down, I do it up front. BTW, while I find the linguistic discussion interesting, is it really an AoIR issue? Dear all Recently Ted Coopman, the elected AoIR grad student representative, posted the call for expressions of interest in being involved in the AoIR Graduate Student Research Group, eliciting some discussion on the list. As President I just want to emphasise that this proposal is fully supported by the executive, based on Ted's detailed planning. It also follows on from some of the things that Ted indicated he wanted to do as grad student rep in the pre-election discussions in 2005.I also want to indicate (as Ted has already explained) that the GSRG is in a pilot stage and may or may not continue, or be changed, depending on what happens over the next year or so. Indeed the comments made on the list will prove useful in helping to shape and develop the GSRG in ways that are fully supportive of both the broad aims of the Association and specifically supporting and promoting graduate students. Can I ask that any graduate students who are interested in involvement in the group contact Ted directly for more information. Since it is a pilot project, involvement will assist us making sure that the GSRG continues and develops to meet a variety of needs within the Association. Hi, all, In working on an article about expression emotion online, I remember early on in the literature on online communication, someone used the term "talk/write" to describe online textual communication, whether in chat or email. Understanding that theoretically anyone could put those two words together to describe the tone of much online interaction, especially among friends, I wonder if you know who first used those words in a scholarly book or article?
