Can you recommend peer-reviewed print journals on computer research? I have an article-length analysis of my recent online survey of those who create and use chatbots (conversational agents) and I'm trying to get a sense of the publications, beyond the lists I have been able to find. My particular line of inquiry was into issues of race, gender, and sexuality as opposed to practical usability questions (if that helps recommend journals). If people have feelings on a hierarchy (top journals to average), please contribute that as well -- I'm sure others on the list have similar questions. I have already consulted the AOIR scholarly resources page. Below is one list I came across. Please add to or comment on these if you are familiar with them. A PS on hedges -- is the interest in written text or spoken text or e-text? there will be some methodological differences concerning the analysis for each. Ken Hyland, for example, has some extremely interesting discussions of hedging in written text. There is, as this discussion suggests, more controversy in how to interpret hedges in spoken, transcribed, and electronic text. What is new for me, looking at Myspace's role in political organizing, is how Internet software that has been designed primarily for getting fun information about other people (pictures, interests, etc.) for social and dating purposes seems to have potential for sparking political involvement across distances, in a way that both text-based Internet and mass media are less suited to. We know from studies of political attitudes and behavior that personal contacts are very important motivators for altering both. Gustavo, the high school student whose interview I posted, describes the Myspace slideshow of a march in california as "the main thing that got my attention" and spurred him to organize where he lived in texas. Without inferring too much about what he was initially looking for on Myspace that morning, I can certainly imagine how someone might feel motivated to become an organizer after seeing pictures of peers elsewhere marching for a cause one shares an interest in. In earlier times, a cute and funny campus organizer might come to your dorm room and casually tell you about a rally, or a cool and slightly older kid down the street might be a member of an activist group and get you interested in it. These people still exist, of course, but now they can be thousands of miles away with profiles you are checking out anonymously on Myspace. That seems a lot more compelling at the pre-commitment stage than watching a news report about a march, or getting an email message from someone you don't know and can't see. Then, once you've decided to organize, you contact your friends and schoolmates using phone trees, email, flyers etc., because those are more effective media for targeted communication within one's preexisting network. Myspace seems more suited to the initial stage of political involvement, providing the spark of interest that comes, for example, from curiosity about another person and what they are doing, and a desire to compare it to what *you* are doing -- sitting in your room looking at Myspace profiles, perhaps, while others just like you are marching for your rights. A tool for doing that across distances, available to and used by most young people, was missing in earlier eras. It will be interesting to see how much difference it makes. It is both a scientific conference and a community event, open to the public. GUSTAVO JIMENEZ: Well, it all began on Sunday. Sunday morning, like around 9:00. I was actually on MySpace. Thats the website that was a real big help in getting the word out. And I seen a bulletin that a girl from L.A. had posted up; and it showed, you know, the march the rally that L.A. had and the hundreds of thousands of people that showed up. And it also had some sort of a slideshow. And it showed these pictures of, you know, the rally and migrant workers and everything. And I guess that that was the main thing that kind of got my attention and said, well, if California, you know, is trying so hard and people around the U.S. is trying so hard -- because you hear about the news, you know, people marching in other states -- and I said, well, we should try to do something here. And she had actually posted up a national walkout for Monday the 27th. And I guess usually when you see those type of things, you know, walkouts, nobody really does them; but on those, I guess, you know, its for a reason, its for a good cause. Her first book on it is Context and Consciousness (an edited volume) and another will appear this fall. Although she doesn't work with mobile devices, she'll probably have suggestions for who does.
