Researching Social Media After the API: A One Day Workshop University of Liverpool (and online) Wednesday 19th June 2024 (exact times to be confirmed!) Deadline for submission: Friday 24th May 2024 In the recent past, social media platforms became more open about working alongside academic researchers and crucially, enabling academic access to their data in order to facilitate political communication research (and many other forms of research besides). However, this has been dramatically reversed in recent years in what Axel Bruns (2019) has referred to as the “APIcalyspe”. Both Meta and X (formerly Twitter) have withdrawn or sought to restrict access to their platforms for academic research by making it prohibitively expensive. The discipline now stands at a crossroads (Bruns, 2019). Either accept and adapt to the new access arrangements, most likely to the detriment of the scope, volume, and overall quality of the research, or consider methodological innovations and workarounds to examine these platforms central to our everyday existence. To this end, we would like to invite contributions to a one-day workshop to be held in hybrid format (online and in person, at the University of Liverpool), to discuss how we might continue to research social media platforms under these difficult conditions. Potential topics could include (but are not restricted to): - researching the ‘black box’ (documenting and analysing communication on closed platforms such as WhatsApp/Discord/ etc. - The significance of small-N case studies - Researching dead or declining platforms - The ethics of collaborating with technology companies - Researching content moderation practices - Practical reflections on specific methods - Qualitative approaches Please submit a 300 word abstract outlining the topic of your proposed contribution along with your name and contact information. Dear Colleagues, Greetings! Jean Burgess will give the Steve Jones Internet Research Lecture in the 2024 International Communication Association (ICA) Conference on Saturday, June 23, at Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre, in Gold Coast, Australia. The title of Burgess’ lecture is "Why the GenAI Moment Needs Communication and Media Research.” Burgess notes that Generative AI (GenAI) moment, marked most emphatically by the release and widespread adoption of large language and multimodal models in 2022-2023, represents a paradigm shift in the history of AI, its meanings, and its roles in society - and it is a paradigm shift to which communication and media research is uniquely well positioned to respond. Burgess indicates that GenAI is fundamentally an information, communication and media phenomenon. In addition to operating and being applied predictively, analytically, and discriminatively, Burgess believes that AI is now emphatically expressive, communicative, and agentive in its operations and uses. It is already deepening existing tendencies toward personalization and customization in our media environment. It is also rapidly being integrated into the infrastructures, platforms, and interfaces of the internet and digital media whose characteristics and cultures communication and media researchers have spent the last several decades working out how to observe and study. In this talk, Burgess argues that communication and media researchers have much to offer - theoretically, methodologically, and pragmatically - as we all try to deal with the challenges and possibilities suggested by GenAI. In doing so, Burgess positions the GenAI moment within a far longer history that includes other key moments of transformation, such as those marked by the emergence and adoption of the World Wide Web, the smartphone, and social media platforms. Like these technologies, Burgess argues that GenAI is a potentially general purpose technology that is likely to have significant implications for a wide range of other societal domains. Working through the history of scholarship focused on these and other examples, Burgess hopes to show how digital communication and media studies scholars could be playing a far more central role than we have in the recent past, as our societies and cultures grapple with the further transformations unlikely to unfold over the coming decade. Jean Burgess is Distinguished Professor of Digital Media at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) Digital Media Research Center, and in the QUT School of Communication. She researches and publishes on issues of cultural participation in new media contexts, with a particular focus on user-created content, online social networks, and co-creative media including digital storytelling. Organized by Anthropology Southern Africa and hosted by the University of Johannesburg, this groundbreaking event promises a rich exploration of anthropological knowledge under the theme: Reimagining Anthropological Knowledge: Perspectives, Practices, and Power Anthropology, as with other disciplines in the arts and social sciences, has engaged over decades with multiple paradigmatic shifts and critiques of the ways in which anthropological knowledge is gathered, organised, presented and theorised. From the 1960s onwards, anthropological knowledge has engaged with, and seen concomitant shifts in practice as a result of [post - ] theoretical movements: Post-structuralism; Post-modernism; Post-colonialism; Post-socialism; Post-humanism; Post- post-colonialism -> decolonial shift; Post-truth. Recent shifts in some spaces have also critiqued even the notion of ‘post-’, such as the decolonial movement, for example, which argues that post-colonialism does not take critique far enough, and that social theory should strive instead for decolonial approaches. All of these critiques share a core concern with recognising the constructedness of knowledge, and the power relations that underlie what we know and how we know it. Anthropology has a slightly different perspective to many other social science disciplines in that the discipline itself is premised on a recognition of the inherent value of plural knowledge forms, through cultural relativism and an historic and contemporary disciplinary stance against ethnocentrism. Against this set of concerns, we propose a WAU Congress that engages with anthropological knowledge making in its various forms, recognising theoretical, geographical, socio-political contextual and ontological differences in how anthropological knowledge is made, transmitted and distributed in varied spaces. We seek papers, round tables, workshops, lekgotla, films, and book launches that speak, but are not limited to: • Changing fields of anthropological subdisciplines; • The politics of producing social, cultural, linguistic, biological and paleo- anthropological knowledge; • Ideas and ideals of ethnographic and ethnological practice; • Post-covid practices in anthropological knowledge making; • Digital worlds and the role of new technologies in fieldwork; • The legitimacy of museums and collections as knowledge repositories; • Ideas of truth and/ or post-truth in knowledge-making and representation; • Anthropology as the humbling practice of learning; • Tensions between local knowledge production and academic knowledge production; • Disaggregating local knowledges in light of critical decolonial perspectives; • Challenges and successes of the decolonial imperative; • Decoloniality and criticality: overlaps, tensions, and differences; • The politics of disseminating knowledges; • Manifestations of hegemony in knowledge production, and their dangers; • The knowledges which one can’t quite see, hear, touch, feel, smell; • Survival, revival and flourishing in a “post”- catastrophic world; • Changing ethics, methods and techniques in ethnographic research; • (Re)production of hegemony and hierarchy in anthropological research; • Pleasure, joy and fun in anthropological research; • Anthropology out of the “Ivory towers”; • “Studying up” and anthropology of institutions/elites etc; • Creativity and the art in/of/as research. Sixth International Conference on Real-Time Intelligent Systems (RTIS 2024) Tien Giang University My Tho (near Ho-chi-Minh) Vietnam October 17-19, 2024 www.socio.org.uk/rtis Springer Lecture Notes in Networks and Systems (LNNS) The International Conference on Real-time Intelligent Systems (RTIS) has traveled from Beijing, China (2016), to Ho-Chi-Min, Vietnam. The sixth edition will take place at Tien Giang University. Over the last few years, real-time intelligent computing has radically transformed the human lifestyle. Research on real-time intelligent systems is multi-disciplinary, exploiting concepts from diverse areas such as big data processing, computational intelligence, location-based services, recommendation systems, and multimedia processing. In today’s highly dynamic environment, analysing data in real-time is necessary to understand how systems process data, reason the outputs, and anticipate trends in intelligent computing. To this end, this conference will serve as a platform to manifest the ongoing research in the field. Author instructions and LaTex2e (preferred) and Word macro files are available on the submission page. Submitted papers should be at most 14 pages (long papers) and 8 pages (short ones), including figures, tables and references (in the Springer template). Authors of accepted papers are required to transfer their copyrights. For a paper to appear in the proceedings, at least one of the authors MUST register for the conference by the camera-ready submission deadline with a full registration. Springer’s Lecture Notes in Networks and Systems (LNNS) (https://www.springer.com/series/15179) will publish the accepted papers and be indexed in SCOPUS, EI Compendex, INSPEC, WTI Frankfurt eG, zbMATH, and SCImago. All the papers published in the series are submitted for consideration in the Web of Science. We are bringing key industry stakeholders and academics from around the world to discuss the future of news.
