Thanks David! This article is excellent for my literature review. I am nearly finished the first three chapters and I am adding targeted literature now. This piece really hits home that the industry has conducted a highly successful and effective anti-piracy communications campaign. The consortium offers an opportunity for Ph.D. students making progress on their dissertation research to share and discuss their research with peers and faculty mentors. It will include multiple concurrent small group sessions facilitated by experienced faculty members with expertise in the topic area or methodological approach. In addition, there will be opportunities to network with peers and faculty, learn about research and publishing strategies, and engage in discussions on research, teaching, jobs, and careers. As the purpose of the Doctoral Consortium is to share and get feedback on research, it is most useful for students who have defended a proposal (or are close to doing so). The consortium will be held on Friday 19 May 2006 as a pre-conference activity in conjunction with Connections 2006 (19-21 May 2006), at the Syracuse University School of Information Studies, in Syracuse, NY. Accepted participants will be expected to arrive in Syracuse by 6 pm on Thursday 18 May 2006. A get-acquainted event will take place at 7 pm. SCMC transcription suggestions.

Hi all, I'm working on a transcription system for transcribing conversations held through instant messages (specifically, through AIM)- it's based loosely off of the system used in Garcia and Jacobs 1999 for chatroom data. I'm interested specifically in doing micro-analyses of the talk, so using logfiles obtained through the program as data just aren't cutting it. One of my problems is recording silences in between utterances, since I'm aiming towards measuring them in tenths of a second, and the only transcription software I'm aware of can only measure gaps this closely from an audio file. All obvious lack of sound aside, I'm transcribing directly from a quicktime video file of the interaction. Is anyone aware of a transcription program that can precisely measure silences straight from a video file? Additionally, any other known examples from books or articles of non-logfile transcription systems for synchronous CMC would be appreciated. The Singapore Internet Research Centre seeks a new Executive Director Nanyang Technological University seeks nominations and applications for the Executive Director of the Singapore Internet Research Centre. The Executive Director will join an award-winning faculty in the School of Communication and Information to oversee research and all operational functions of the Centre. Candidates must be able to provide intellectual leadership to a wide variety of research initiatives, including multi-disciplinary and multi-methodological studies, and to work with a diverse array of faculty and researchers to bring strategic focus to the Centre. Candidates must have administrative and teaching experience and an established body of research. Research experience in Asia is preferred. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to: * teaching one course per semester, * mentoring junior faculty, * preparing budgets and grant proposals, * supervising research associates and student assistants, * initiating and maintaining overseas collaborative relationships, * coordinating short- and long-term visits by scholars, * overseeing SiRC publications and publicity efforts, and * organizing conferences, training workshops, and seminars. The Singapore Internet Research Centre (SiRC) is a research initiative at the School of Communication and Information at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Assistant Professor in Digital Media Production Job Description: The Department of Communication at Florida State University is seeking a tenure track Assistant Professor who can serve our digital media production program, beginning August 2006. Applicants should be able to work in a variety of production settings including studio, field and/or on-line, working with students to create entertainment and/or public affairs programming and media products that can be distributed across a variety of media platforms. Experience with digital video cameras, lighting and audio equipment as well as post-production software including AVID and/or Final Cut Pro is necessary. Familiarity with Aftereffects, Pro Tools, Lightwave, and DVD authoring programs as well as podcasting and streaming video is a plus.
