I am bemuzzled by the Colorado teen internet survey which Reid Cornwell has shared with us. Here is what he posted: "The Center For Internet Research just completed an online survey. While the results are preliminary the trends are clear and as follows: * Links to the survey form were sent via email to 2000 Colorado teens between 14 and 18 * 1,000 were in rural settings and 1,000 were urban * 1,123 people responded * 610 rural kids responded (insignificant gender differences) * 515 urban kids responded (insignificant gender differences) * All respondents reported that they participated in some sort of real-time chatting * All reported that they did so while doing other tasks (homework etc.) * All reported that they preferred this form of communication rather than telephone * All reported that they spent more time chatting online or emailing than they spent in f2f activities * All reported that they downloaded music at some time * All reported that they share music, links data, and homework with their friends * All reported that they valued technical skills of their peers and it appears that kids who help them keep their devices working had certain status * All reported that they did not perceive a peer to peer negative reaction related to computer use or skills * All reported that kids who did not use these devices were seen as odd or different. (stigma)" /END PREVIOUS POST This apparently is an internet-only population. A few questions: 1. What was the sampling frame? Was it a random sample? 2. What was the response rate? 3. And most importantly, I am immensely impressed that All of the respondents agreed in All of the items mentioned above. Even Brezhnev only had 99% or so voting for him in USSR elections in the 1980s, as I recall. What is it about Colorado teens that they agree with each other so thoroughly? Dear colleagues, the detailed program of the 8th international conference General Online Research (GOR06) is available. The conference will take place March 20-22, 2006 in Bielefeld, Germany. It is organized on behalf of the German Society for Online Research (DGOF) . The program includes more than 140 oral and poster presentations on topics such as the digital divide & digital inequality, e- commerce, e-democracy, e-learning, blogs etc. As traditionally, there is a continuing stream of sessions focusing on methodological questions concerning issues of online data collection and web surveys. What I should have said, " they spend more time socializing online than in f2f activities". We all hope that they are not using class time socializing and the breaks between classes and lunch do not afford much time. While we did not address the non-connected population our guess is that our results would be similar to yours. Also, mountain Colorado is very similar to the Blacksburg area. As an aside, my bachelors - masters was VCU + UVA and I lived in Richmond for 30 years. I have many friends who are Hokies. I digress. My point is that I know your geography well. It is my read that rural populations have found that the internet closes the distance between homes and frees the family phone in many cases. I still grouse about how my sisters dominated the phone back in the dark age of you youth. (I'm 62) Would you please send me your paper? My literature search did not find it. Shame on me. Reid

I would also be interested in studies that deal with the non-connected population. We intend to do this same study in 3 other states before we publish (East, Mid-west, Coastal West). As someone with a proven interest in Digital Government / eGovernment, you are invited to cast your vote on the proposed constitutions of the new North American and international societies. Re Latin America vs. Asia it seems that Nancy's points rest on 2 distinct criteria: a) number of AIR members in the contemplated area b) level of Internet research carried out in the area. Obviously the 2 are valid but may perhaps need to be combined, rather than used alternatively Though probably less "visible" because of language Latin American Internet research might be no less significant than Asian one. The level of Internet related activities (in education, communities, E-Gov, e-Health, networks devployment, etc.) is also quite impressive. One may furthermore look at the conferences as a means to promote both AIR membership and Internet research - when the chances of economic soundness for a given location seem fair. Shani: I am a weird combination of film/tv producer and public relations consultant/writer who is a podcasting and content manager for a U.S. civil agency. My dissertation is examining mobile TV and gaming. James Gee is a good start on the power of gaming. However, Sprint/Nextel which is located in the DC area has embraced mobile TV and so has Verizon in the United States. My research indicates that South Korea and Japan along with the UK have some of the best mobicasts. The U.S. is a major content creator but the telecomms, entertainment companies, software firms and electronics makers are spending too much time suing themselves and their customers to really develop this type of programming. However, the new iTunes phones from Cingular allows the downloading of only 100 songs but I am not sure how many television shows one can download. Many of the new Motorola phones and Verizon phones; however, have Windows Media which will allow one to watch television via phones. This is a new area but the pending telecom deal between AT&T and Bell South will actually speed up the process of television by phone because the new AT&T and Bell South own Cingular jointly and can provide this service. Verizon is already providing cable service in the Washington area. The real war for viewers is the telecomms versus the cable companies. The winner of this battle will take control of the satellite industry and battle with Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and Apple for eyeballs. Apple controls handhelds currently with its popular iPods and iTunes music store. The music industry is trying to charge higher prices but Apple has held the line on prices (.99 U.S. for music and $1.99 for television and films). Apple chair Steve Jobs called the industry greedy several months ago and now there is a legal investigation of the music industry again. They lost the last time and settled for alleged payola and other offenses. Apple is the key. If Apple develops a cell phone with larger capacities, this industry will flourish. There are rumors that a new phone iPod with heavier storage will be available by years end. However, its competitors and allies like Motorola are utilizing Windows so that they can sell more phones. Apple wants people to buy more of its PC's hence they have switched to Intel chips and they want people to connect their phones to laptops. Its competitors charge $1.99 for a computer free download to the phone directly which is where Apple may be forced to go. Remember, Apple just had its 1 billionth download a week ago so it is still the leader. If you find some good things send them my way. Thanks! You just got the quick abbreviated version.
