Databases of ICT texts?

Hi all! Does anyone of you know of databases of tagged CMC (or ICT or whatever we call it now...) texts written by children aged, say, 5-18? I'm applying for a research grant and need to have a clue whether there are similar databases for languages other than Swedish?! Actually, I'd be grateful to know whether there are any databases of ICT texts at all that are tagged and available in any form?! All the best! history of Internet Studies?

I have a student who is trying to do some background research into "the development of Internet Studies as a discipline." I first of all told her that Internet Studies probably doesn't warrant the term "discipline" yet, but that's the sort of answer that doesn't help much. So, does anyone know of any resources/readings that detail how Internet Studies as a field (if it is such a thing yet) developed, and how Internet Studies programs came into being? Thanks, Norm Clark Appalachian State University (where we do have an Internet Studies major, but it's housed in Interdisciplinary Studies, so it doesn't really "count" in some folks eyes as a "real" major)

The annual conferences bring together leading researchers and professionals from all over the globe and from many disciplines. Over the years, the interest has increased tremendously: the 2005 conference saw more than one hundred accepted contributions and over 150 participants coming from more than 30 countries, also including several developing countries. Hence, the EGOV Conferences have become a reunion for academics and professionals as well as an important ground for networking. The EGOV Conference Series hosts four distinct formats of contributions: Scientific papers, project presentations, workshops, and panel discussions. These formats have been found attractive for both researchers and practitioners. They encourage scientific rigor and discussions of state of the art in the field, but also welcome innovative research work in progress, and studies of practical eGovernment projects and systems implementation. Following the success of last year¹s pilot, the series also includes a PhD student colloquium, which provides doctoral students with a forum for presenting their work, with networking opportunities as well as with cross-disciplinary inspiration. Over the years, the organizers have witnessed that organisational and user-related issues long discussed among researchers have finally gained importance in practice. Also, while many topics have maintained high attention and relevancy over the years, nowadays also the issues of assessment of eGov efforts , the role of eGov, and ICT in general, for development have made it to the top of the agenda. PhD student colloquium The PhD student colloquium, held in conjunction with the DEXA conference (either before or after the conference days) and in cooperation with the Demo-net project, invites students to submit their PhD project and thesis proposals which will be reviewed and discussed by other PhD students and senior eGov researchers. This is useful for bringing PhD students who are scattered across countries and disciplines more together. Contributions will be published by Alcatel in a PhD colloquium brochure. Among the PhD students, the senior eGov researchers and EGOV organising committee will award a PhD students prize based on the quality of the submitted paper, presentation and the underlying research project. SMSics

I'm unaware of a sufficient term for SMS shorthand (including common sets of abbreviations, dropped vowels, letters for numbers, systems of substitution, etc.) Thinking of "ebonics", I've invented "SMSics" (ess'-im ESS'-icks). It rolls off the tongue nicely. It sounds a bit sexy in potential paper titles ("The Evolution of SMSics"; "The Cultural Politics of Hegemonic SMSics", "Unicultural SMSics in a Multicultural World"; "Sex Effects and SMSics") And I could hear someone @ CNN stumbling over the teleprompted text the first time they see it, but being proud to say it correctly half an hour later, after getting producer input during the commercial break. :) Like it? -eg

PLEASE DISTRIBUTE WIDELY OPEN CALL FOR PARTICIPATION Workshop on Generating Collaborative Research in the Ethical Design of Surveillance Infrastructures June 8-11, 2006; Austin, Texas Surveillance may be understood as a set of processes of identification, tracking, analysis and response which organize social knowledge, social relations, and social power. Surveillance mediates everyday life. For example, internet "cookies," shopping loyalty cards, and mobile phone numbers all individuate and identify us. These identifiers are used to index databases recording our web surfing activities, our purchases, and our movements. The databases are subjected to statistical analysis in order to produce knowledge of demographic categories, typical patterns, or suspect behavior. This knowledge is then applied back to individuals in the population in order to assign each to a particular niche market or risk group, and to act toward them accordingly. Thus, through surveillance, knowledge is created, categories and types are produced, individuals are assigned social identities, and actions are taken that articulate those identities within a larger social order. These surveillance practices are themselves shaped by overlapping and intertwined technical systems, laws, institutional configurations, and cultural understandings. This "infrastructure" of surveillance supports patterns of access to the resources of knowledge production, social visibility, and social position. In June 2006 a three-day workshop will be held in Austin, Texas. The purpose of the meeting is to generate collaborative research projects exploring further * the social implications of surveillance practice, * the technological, legal, economic, and cultural infrastructures that shape surveillance practice, and * possible technological, legal, economic, or cultural interventions to reshape those infrastructures to desired ends. The workshop will address this issue in the context of the following themes: * If surveillance mediates the production of categories and types of people, how can surveillance infrastructures be shaped to permit individuals, and groups of individuals, to coalesce around a particular identity? * How can surveillance infrastructures mediate the ability of groups and individuals to "perform" certain identities within certain contexts? * How can surveillance infrastructures mediate the ability of subcultures to generate and sustain knowledge of and for themselves? * How can surveillance resources be appropriately allocated to ensure that groups of many scales (the family, the subculture, the nation) are able to defend, protect, and nurture their own (perhaps conflicting) interests? We seek participants whose interests and expertise complement and expand upon each other's work in social theory, information system design, business, and public policy, and who will be able to address issues such as: * the application of legal paradigms other than privacy to practices of information collection. We are particularly interested explorations of legal theories of cultural rights and information commons. * the application of novel information processing techniques, including, but not limited to, pseudonymity, digital rights management, and cluster analysis. * the application of social theories of identity, including queer theory and performance studies. * the intersection of market interests with ethical surveillance practice. The workshop is intended to provide the initial venue for the production of fundable, collaborative, cross-disciplinary research proposals. Participants will be expected to prepare a position paper for distribution one month prior to the meeting. At the workshop itself, we will identify synergistic interactions of expertise, fruitful research directions, and possible sources of funding. After the workshop, participants will be eligible to apply for seed money grants to complete collaborative grant proposals to pursue those projects. Participants will also be invited to contribute to an edited volume. The project will provide meals and accommodation for workshop participants, and will reimburse reasonable travel costs. Please include a quote of lowest available airfare in your application. Participants from outside the U.S. are especially encouraged to apply. The position is for one year with the possibility of renewal for one more year. The postdoctoral researcher will work as fieldworker/ethnographer on a project on “digital kids” and informal learning, which involves foundational research on how children and youth are using information and communication technologies and participating on the Internet. At USC, the project is led by Mizuko Ito, and is part of a broader project involving Peter Lyman and Diane Harley at UC Berkeley, and Michael Carter at the Monterey Institute of Technology and Education.
