Message board usage - and a reflection on changing research themes

I've been asked to find out among other things what kinds of Internet bulletin boards are most used by young people and what proportion of young people visit them. I thought this kind of thing would be fairly easy to find out - after all bulletin boards/message boards/usenet were among the most studied forms of Internet use in the early days. But I am finding it surprisingly difficult to get this information as current surveys like the Pew and OxIS ones don't seem to track bulletin board use or virtual community participation at all (except insofar as it might be included in uses like "seeking sport information"). Is it because kids these days are all just using IM and writing Xanga blogs or do we only think this because we don't ask them about this kind of use any more? Can anyone help with my statistical questions? And more generally does anyone else agree that as we keep chasing each new phenomenon (file sharing, IM, blogging, social network software) we risk losing track altogether of still extant and important practices (affinity group message board or mailing list use for example - or MUD use?) Probably most readers of these lists know by now that one of our own Internet-Society people, Randal Pinket, won The Apprentice last week -- the lucrative and dubious pleasure of working in Donald Trump's Empire. Randal got his PhD from Sloan School of Business, MIT, and worked with Keith Hampton on his eNeighbors project. Possibly like me, you met Randal at a conference. identity readings?

hello group anybody know of a good online identity piece for a 400-level class? 20-25 pages? recent? I like some of Turkle's chapters for this, but they're so old they talk about MUDs and such and instead of having the students focus on online identity issues they end up rejecting the entire thing because they don't understand what a MUD is and it is very foreign to their online experience so if there was something more recent... something like "here is identity.... here is how online identity can be different and why" (so yeah sort of intro) but academic! netlabels

As far as i understand: a netlabel is a platform, to where musicians (music producers) can upload their (often electronic) music. net users can download the (mostly) mp3-music for free. up-coming artists are promoted by that platform: sometimes, the netlabel organizes events. Normally, the netlabel music is licensed by creative commons. Does anybody know studies over netlabels? Some of the more advanced MUDs have for many years had such options as "ask" or "none of your business" or "prefer not to say" under gender.
