The process of optimization in games seems like a good thing-who wouldn't want to find the most efficient way to play and win? As Christopher Paul argues in Optimizing Play, however, optimization can sometimes risk a tragedy of the commons, where actions that are good for individuals jeopardize the overall state of the game for everyone else. As he explains, players inadvertently limit play as they theorycraft, seeking optimal choices. The process of developing a meta, or the most effective tactic available, structures decision making, causing play to stagnate. A "stale" meta then creates a perception that a game is solved and may lead players to turn away from the game. Drawing on insights from game studies, rhetoric, the history of science, ecology, and game theory literature, Paul explores the problem of optimization in a range of video games, including Overwatch, FIFA/EA Sports FC, NBA 2K, Clash Royale, World of Warcraft, and League of Legends. He also pulls extensively from data analytics in sports, where the problem has progressed further and is even more intractable than it is in video games, given the money sports teams invest to find an edge. Finally, Paul offers concrete and specific suggestions for how games can be developed to avoid the trap set by optimization run amok. CFP: Dialogue in Surveillance & Society on Synthetic Data and Surveillance

Dear Colleagues, We invite expressions of interest to write short (~2000-word) position papers for an upcoming Dialogue section of Surveillance & Society<https://ojs.library.queensu.ca/index.php/surveillance-and-society/index> focused on the promises and perils of synthetic data. The Dialogue will address the surveillance implications raised by the development of synthetic data through machine learning processes, including those which serve as training data for artificial intelligence (AI) and generative AI applications. We aim to publish the section in the December 2024 issue of Surveillance & Society<https://ojs.library.queensu.ca/index.php/surveillance-and-society/index>. In this Dialogue, we seek contributions that address the following questions: * Is synthetic data, as a concept and technology, a surveillance- and privacy-preserving “solution”? That is, does the development and use of synthetic data as training data for AI technologies, apps, and platforms circumvent or mitigate problems of surveillance, privacy, data protection, hidden labor, and so forth? If so, how and to what extent? If not, why not? * Does the development and use of synthetic data as training data for AI technologies and platforms raise the same concerns implicated by the use of standard (non-synthetic) datasets or does it implicate novel surveillance or privacy concerns? If so, in what ways? What are these novel surveillance implications or concerns? Submissions should problematize the “solution” of synthetic data and offer critical reflection on how and whether synthetic data is a solution, even though proposals may argue for or against the technology as a surveillance- or privacy-preserving technique. Proposals may also address some of the reasons that AI training data have taken the shape they have (e.g., expropriation, racial legacies, tech affordances + channeling, scale, etc.) and how and why synthetic data fit into that reality. Submissions should also speak to how the proposed intervention will inform surveillance-studies scholarship. We are hoping to curate a small set of position papers from scholars in various parts of the world, including in the Global South and areas not as commonly the focus of surveillance studies research. As such, we will prioritize submissions against those criteria, in addition to excellence and fit with the full set of accepted papers, including presenting a range of views and positions on the subject of the Dialogue. Inclusive Smart City design requires an intersectional approach that engages human and non-human actors. While in academia inclusive design and socio-technical methods are emerging, Smart City practitioners lack universally accessible collections of methods applicable for diverse target groups. This workshop examines creative, qualitative and participatory methods with practitioners and researchers for inclusive design of Smart Cities that consider the needs and preferences of vulnerable target groups such as older adults, wildlife, and nature. A participatory approach is applied, taking into account the multidisciplinary complex work context of practitioners, e.g., representatives of municipalities. This workshop is the third of a series of workshops against this theme and closes the circle of different relevant stakeholders (researchers, vulnerable target groups, practitioners), resulting into a collection of inclusive, participatory methods which are made accessible to Smart City practitioners in an online toolbox. Call for Participation: This half-day workshop will explore creative, qualitative, and participatory methods for the inclusion of vulnerable human and non-human groups (wildlife, nature) in Smart City design. Synthetic Data for State Statistics/Census

*10 June 2024, 13.15-16.00: *Join us for this TEMA DATA LAB session on *Synthetic Data for State Statistics/Census*, in collaboration with the Operationalising Ethics for AI project and the Social Complexity and Fairness in Synthetic Medical Data project. *The seminar will be held at Campus Norrköping, of Linköping University and online*. Census data represent a social contract between citizen and state, with the collection, use and management of these kind of data reflecting spatial and temporal specificities of individual nation states’ policies and practices. Synthetic data, through older techniques of statistical disclosure control, have long been used to guarantee confidentiality as a key part of this contract. New techniques such as differential privacy are changing how state statistics data are prepared and released, challenging common expectations of what such data represent and of their connection to reality. In this workshop, we ask: - What kinds of knowledge do state statistics/census data promise? How are/were these affected through the use of statistical disclosure control techniques? - What are the impacts of new techniques to produce synthetic census data? - Can the trajectory of synthetic data within the census domain give us some insights into what we may see evolving in other contexts of application? Hello everyone, We are excited to share the launch of a new Master's degree (MSc) – Data, Policy and Society – at City, University of London, UK. This MSc is a unique collaboration between the Sociology & Criminology (City School of Policy and Global Affairs) and the Computer Science Departments (Centre for Human Computer Interaction Design (HCID), providing students with the practical research skills and knowledge to critically understand and ethically assess how data is used across a multitude of industries. The social and technological are merging in arguably unprecedented ways. Computational and data- and AI-centric systems are pervasive in contemporary life, just as the technological capacities for enumeration, modelling and prediction are now entangled with virtually everything from people's daily interactions to political and democratic structures. Not only is computation playing a greater role in online, social interaction, it is shaping how publics, industries, practitioners, researchers, politicians, make sense of and act in the world. The MSc Data, Policy and Society invites a new kind of professional. One both trained in the technicalities of data-centric systems and skilled in the application of social research and critical scholarship. Knowing how to design fairer and more equitable digital technologies and flourishing societies, demands both an understanding of how the data and digital operate and the ways that such technologies remediate or enact the social. The MSc Data, Policy and Society is taught by specialists across the social sciences and human-computer interaction. You will be equipped with a richer critical and ethical understanding of today’s computing industry, the social, political, and economic relations it increasingly helps scaffold. This is significant, given the growing interest tech companies or government bodies, for instance, have in understanding the social impact of their products or policies, and, therefore, employing individuals who understand and can draw on a range of data analysis and research methods that are rooted in sociological knowledge, human-computer interaction, politics and ethics. The proceedings will be available through the ACM digital library. Special Issue Extended versions of selected papers will be invited for fast-track publications in the Theoretical Computer Science (TCS) Journal or in Elsevier’s Pervasive and Mobile Computing (PMC) Journal. Best Paper Award The conference will assign a Best Paper Award. Important Dates (All the deadlines are in AoE) * Paper submission: July 25, 2024 * Notifications: September 27, 2024 * Camera-ready Papers Deadline: October 30, 2024 Submission Instructions * All submissions must use the official LaTeX ACM article template acmart.cls, version of 1.80 or greater, using the following documentclass instruction: \documentclass[sigconf,authordraft]{acmart}. * Regular Papers should not exceed 10 pages double-column including figures, tables, and references in standard ACM format. Regular papers may include a clearly marked Appendix with all the additional details required to validate the results (including technical proofs and experimental results that did not fit into the first 10 pages). * Short Papers must not exceed 5 pages double-column including figures, tables, and references in standard ACM format. At least one author of each accepted paper must register for the conference and present the paper. All papers must be submitted through the EasyChair portal. Double-Blind Reviewing The conference will employ a lightweight double-blind reviewing process. Submissions should not reveal the identity of the authors in any way. In particular, authors’ names, affiliations, and email addresses should not appear anywhere in the submission. Nothing should be done in the name of anonymity that weakens the submission or makes the job of reviewing the paper more difficult. In particular, important references should not be omitted or anonymized. Use the third person to refer to the author's previous work, e.g., replace "as we have shown before" with "as shown before in [X]." In addition, authors should feel free to disseminate their ideas or draft versions of their paper as they normally would. For example, authors may post drafts of their papers on the web, submit them to arXiv, and give talks on their research ideas. Conflict of Interest Indications of conflicts of interest will be required in the submission form. A conflict of interest is limited to the following: * A family member or close friend. * A Ph.D. advisor or advisee (no time limit), or a postdoctoral or undergraduate mentor or mentee within the past five years. * A person with the same affiliation. * A person involved in an alleged incident of harassment. (It is not required that the incident be reported.) * Frequent collaborators, or collaborators who have jointly published papers within the last two years.
