Dear colleagues, Thank you for accepting me as part of this wonderful email list. Below I am sharing a call for papers for a monograph I am co-editing with my colleague Vítor Blanco that may be of interest to some of you. [Spanish below] Dear colleagues, We are happy to share with you the Call for Papers of the second issue of the Journal MariCorners. Revista de estudios interdisciplinares LGBTIA+ y queer, which we are editing together with great enthusiasm. The idea for the monograph came after the International Congress on Media, Gender and Sexualities: Representations, Literacies and Audiences<https://www.benasque.org/2023media/> held in June 2023 at the Centro de Ciencias de Benasque and has the support of the projects organising the congress (of which we are part), LGBTIQ+ Screens <https://www.lgbtiq-screens.org/> and TRANSGELIT.<https://www.ub.edu/gendims/es/transgelit_home/> For this monograph, we have focused on the current landscape of LGBTIQA+ Media Studies in the Latin American and Spanish academia, but as you will see in the call itself the subject matter is quite open and we are especially interested in critical perspectives that take into account different forms of oppression and/or their intersections, including: * Queer/LGBTIQ+ Historiographies * Biases, Knowledge Gaps and Queer/LGBTIQ+ Epistemologies * Dilemmas and methodologies in and for queer/LGBTIQ+ research * Neoliberal academia and the challenges of queer/LGBTIQ+ education and research * Queer/LGBTIQ+ pedagogies and media * Violence, LGBTIQ+phobia and the media * Screens, queer/LGBTIQ+ representations, everydayness and intimacy * Collaborative cultures, user-generated content, transmedia * Audiences and interactions with queer/LGBTIQ+ content. Invitation to AAG virtual sessions on migration data (April 19)

Dear colleagues, We are writing to invite you to attend three panel discussions about migration data as part of the Toronto regional node of the American Association of Geographers annual conference on *Friday, April 19th.* The sessions are focused on discussing how to research, preserve, and share migration-related data, and are organized by the founders of *Haven: The Asylum Lab,* a new lab at the University of Toronto Scarborough that aims to become a repository for global migration data sets and to encourage international and cross-disciplinary conversations around migration data. The three panels are: 1. Collecting Obscured International Migration Data (featuring Haven website launch and first data drop) 2. International Migration Data and Contemporary Bordering Practices 3. Details for each session, including Zoom links, are in the attached PDF. *About Haven: The Asylum Lab* Haven: The Asylum Lab is dedicated to the preservation and sharing of migration-related data, by providing space, infrastructure, resources, and tools to support collaborative analysis of these data, so that we can collectively have and share better access and tell better stories and counternarratives with data. Beyond our brick-and-mortar lab in Scarborough, we are also a global network and an online archive for data. We are in the process of launching a new website that will support these functions. Haven’s website will feature a monthly data drop. Each data drop will profile the work of a researcher or project that assembled a unique data set, now archived at U of T through Haven. The drop will be accompanied by a podcast interview where researchers explain the importance and collection of these data, as well as papers and other work conducted with these data, and a webinar where researchers discuss how to operationalize methods used to collect these data (e.g., visualization, access to information requests). The Haven website will make it possible for those interested to be involved in multiple ways: by contributing data, by joining the Haven network, or by using our resources in the classroom. NEW BOOK. The Anthropology of Digital Practices: Dispatches from the Online Culture Wars by John Postill

Dear all I am very pleased to announce that my new book *The Anthropology of Digital Practices: Dispatches from the Online Culture Wars* (Routledge, 2024) is now out. The book connects three distinct research areas – digital ethnography, causal ethnography, and media practice theory – to explore how we might track the effects of new media practices in a digital world. It invites media and communication students and scholars to overcome the field’s old aversion to ‘media effects’ and explore the messy, complex, open-ended effects of new media practices in a digital age. Based on long-term ethnographic research and drawing from recent advances in the study of causality and ethnography, this book tells the ‘formation story’ of the anti-woke movement through a series of critical media events, namely Trump, Covid-19, George Floyd and Ukraine, with a Postscript on the Israel-Hamas war. The study argues that digital media practices (e.g. podcasting, YouTubing, tweeting, commenting, broadcasting) will have ‘formative’ effects on an emerging social world at different points in time. One important task of the digital ethnographer is precisely to distinguish between the formative and non-formative effects of specific media practices. The key dramatis personae include Jordan Peterson, Joe Rogan, Sam Harris, Tucker Carlson, Bret Weinstein, and Heather Heying. I hope it will be useful in both undergrad and postgrad teaching, incl. in media/digital anthropology, media and communication studies, digital politics, social movements research, and qualitative methodology. I am hiring two postdoctoral researchers and two phd researchers to work on my project ALGOFOLK (Algorithmic folklore: The mutual shaping of vernacular creativity and automation) at the University of Bergen. These are 3-year and 4-year full-time positions embedded within a generously funded research project working at the intersection of digital sociology/anthropology, critical AI studies, STS, and digital humanities. I am looking to hire people with a background in social sciences and humanities, an interest in the social life of technology, and a global outlook, as well as documented experience with ethnographic and digital humanities methods. 2024 AoIR Dissertation Award Nominations

The Association of Internet Researchers is pleased to call for submissions for the 2024 AoIR Dissertation Award. To be eligible for the AoIR Dissertation Award, a PhD dissertation in the area of internet research must have been filed in the 2023 calendar year. Nominations (self and other) must be received by 17 May 2024. All methods and disciplines are welcome. Submissions details: - A nomination letter that explains why the dissertation is deserving of the award - How it contributes to internet research - A PDF copy of the dissertation should be emailed to dissertationaward [at] aoir.org - The graduate or their supervisor must be a member of AoIR (by 17 May 2024) - Self-nominations are permitted - Filed in 2023 (meaning fully defended, all edits complete, filed/published with a 2023 copyright) The recipient of this award will be announced mid-year 2024. In addition to winning a cash prize, the individual will be presented an award during the AGM at #AoIR2024 conference in November..
