Special Edition of E-Learning Journal Guest Editor: Angela Thomas University of Sydney a.thomas(a)edfac.usyd.edu.au Theme of the Issue: Digital Inter-Faces Description: The focus of this special edition of E-Learning is Digital Inter-Faces. The articles in the edition will examine the issue of identity in and around digital contexts. As our lives become increasingly more technologically inclusive, we face new opportunities to e-xplore, e-xamine, e-xtend, e-xperiment, and e-volve. Technology is changing the ways we think about the world and the ways we position ourselves in the world. Our involvement in and around digital contexts has opened up a place for living within a multiplicity of identities and through this, we can act out our fantasies, become the Other of our desire, and just as importantly, in the words of Eowyn, a 15 year old girl, It's not becoming your own hero that's the point-- it's allowing what's inside of you to show through. And yet online our selves can be conveniently edited, we can be kinder and funnier and more intelligent. In the same series of posts about her online life, Eowyn told me, The person I show to others online is outgoing, different, and not afraid to be herself, and Shadow, a 14 year old boy, revealed, I am sort of a persona, me but minus the things I dont like about myself. Other children revealed to me that rather than edited selves, they become fused selves with their online role-playing characters. The faces shown to others online may be masks of other personae or characters, yet underneath are intimately fused with the self. What are the consequences and implications of these new faces? The faces of our cyborg self, our edited self, our hybrid self, our fused and blended self into another character, and the Other of our desire. What can we actually learn in this masquerading of fragmentedness that has become a hallmark of post-modern identity? In this issue of E-Learning, our contributors discuss aspects of these issues, drawing from a range of theoretical, sociological and political perspectives. Thoughts about gender, race, youth, politics, power, trust, and authenticity are critically discussed with respect to the many faces and inter-faces of the digital world. Ha. It's great that "a consensus of telecom professionals and lobbyists have reached consensus" on this issue, as the reporter says. (I wonder why telecom professionals from Skype weren't invited?) Others have not reached a consensus. I went to a different panel on net neutrality in Washington D.C. a few days after the one chronicled in Jeremy's forward. Additionally, if you are coming to the conference, please know that there are still a few tickets available for the banquet and for the L tour. I particularly want to highlight the latter, as it is a unique chance to see Chicago's historical sites from the vantage point of a privately rented Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) train (commonly known as the L). The tour will be led by Chicago transit expert Michael Shiffer, CTA vice president and University of Illinois at Chicago associate professor. After boarding the four car train reserved for us, the tour will highlight the importance of mass transit in Chicago and significant Chicago neighborhoods along the several train lines including the oldest line, the brown line. The CTA operates the nation's second largest public transportation system and covers the City of Chicago and 40 surrounding suburbs. On an average weekday, nearly 1.5 million rides are taken on the CTA. Breakfast will be included in the approximately tour departing from downtown Chicago. Riders must meet just outside the Rush Street doors by the lobby of the Marriott Hotel by 8:25 a.m. on Saturday, October 8 to walk to the train boarding location. The tour will last about 3 - 4 hours. As for the banquet, in addition to a terrific menu (featuring a tenderloin carving station, pasta buffet - including vegetarian sauces - soup and salad bar, and coffee station with desserts) this year’s conference banquet will feature the Eric Hochberg Quartet, an ensemble consisting of some of Chicago’s best known and most respected jazz musicians. Eric Hochberg has been a mainstay of the Chicago music scene for more than twenty years, having lent his bass to a variety of projects, performing and/or recording with the likes of Pharoah Sanders, Bobby McFerrin, Pat Metheny, Cassandra Wilson, Von Freeman, Chico Freeman, Ken Nordine, Cannonball Adderly, David Bromberg, and many others. Mark Colby, tenor sax,, has performed with Gerry Mulligan, Jaco Pastorius, Frank Sinatra, Maynard Ferguson, Bob James, Charlie Haden and Mose Allison. He has been a jazz faculty member at DePaul University since 1983. Phil Gratton is ahighly sought after drummer with over 30 years experience, and has played all over the world with Dorothy Donnegan and Marian McPartland. Pianist Dennis Luxion has played with Steve Allen, Chet Baker, Von Freeman, Curtis Fuller, Sheila Jordan, Lee Konitz, Archie Shepp, Woody Shaw, and Toots Thielemans, among others. Cell/Mobile phone use in rural areas? ______________________________ Hi, I've been searching for available published work on cell/mobile use (or lack - or implications of use or lack of use etc) in rural areas in order to use in the context of my recent ethnographies from parts of rural and urban Andhra Pradesh (India). I found some that refer to Grameen Bank experiments, to rural Uganda usage etc. But not much on rural US or rural areas of any other "developed" nations of the world. I did find material on urban use of cellphones Maybe I am looking in the wrong places. mobile taxi tv

Re the AoIR discussion on mobile tv: I experienced an app of mobile tv that scared the heck out of me. In Kyoto, Japan, the taxi driver's GPS system became a TV for him, and he watched soap operas during the entire trip. When I asked a friend, she said, "I do that every day on the drive to work, because I know all the streets." Dunno what the accident rate is. This strikes me as an outgrowth of the now-traditional custom (in Toronto at least) of taxi drivers being on their mobile phones while driving. Which is more immersive: 2-way audio phone chat or 1-way tv? Both scare me when I am passengering. Incidentally, modern Japanese car GPS systems rock. Using large screen divided into multiple information sources, and great, video game perspectives. But why do they have to show every Mcdonalds and 7-11 convenience store along the way? The integrated CD automatically converted my Oscar Peterson disc (patriotic Canadian present) to MP3 as it played. I'm here keynoting the Japanese Social Informatics conference, which has 600 attendees, from a wide spectrum of disciplines -- social sciences, math, physics, engineering. It seems the accessibility of web data has mobilized a number of new entrants to the field. Many have strong data handling skills.
