I couple of days ago I posted a message to the group asking how those that are teaching this semester are using or planning to use the issues surrounding Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath in their classes. So far response has been very low, N=1. I taught a unit to my Introduction to Informatics students last evening. internet research: feminism, post colonial theory and queer (FPTQ) Following up on recent suggestions for other FPTQ meetings at AoIR I'd like to try and get an idea of potential numbers for a social gathering on the evening of Wed 5th October. You don't have to have been at the FPTQ pre-con workshop to attend - (although we are hoping most attendees will be able to come) - this is also an open invite to AoIR members with an interest in FPTQ matters! Could you email me direct if you'd like to be involved in meeting up on the Wednesday evening? This also applies to those of you who have already registered for the workshop. Please let me know by Friday 23rd Sept if at all possible - that would still give us time to sort out a suitable venue in Chicago. We'd also welcome suggestions for FPTQ topics/issues for discussion at the conference so please post these to the FPTQ list or direct to Michelle White if you have ideas. We are now including national research council in our web ranking going into detail to individual centers. At the moment we analyzed German Max Planck and Italian CNR, although we intend to the same with French CNRS and Spanish CSIC. Men fanatically attached to an ideology-such as Hitler and Bin Laden-react with rage when they imagine the existence of others who do not share their belief; do not worship the object that they worship. Non-believers evoke doubt. Internet and Religion in Asia graduate student seminar

The adoption and development of new technologies have been identified by many Asian countries as a key element to achieve long-term developmental goals. Historically, the spread of religion has always been closely linked to the growth and proliferation of new technologies. While the contribution of technological innovations to economic change is widely known and accepted, how new technologies impact on the experience of the sacred and the divine in Asian societies is scarcely documented or understood. Graduate students from across the disciplines are invited to submit papers that focus on the historical, social, cultural and political relations between technology and belief in the Asian context. How does people's use of technology affect their experience of spirituality and the formation of religious identity and community? To what extent is the medium more important than the message? How do developments in the latest technological breakthroughs such as the Internet influence the ways people in Asian societies constitute themselves as social beings, and how does it shape their experience of the sacred and the divine?
