Papers should be submitted via the IR conference system. http://conferences.aoir.org/index.php?cf=3 Click on 'Abstract and Paper Submission' and follow the directions. Suggested length is 5,000 words. Any style is permissible, just be consistent and complete in your references. A good style to follow is APA (American Psychological Assocation: look for details online or in their handbook) or whatever you find in use for your favorite Internet journal. Papers are put online to be shared with other conference goers. Soon after the conference, papers will be transferred to a site accessible only to AoIR members. Papers that are submitted are eligible for consideration for the AoIR "Internet Research Annual". Dear Internet Researcher, A colleague and I are working on a research project that explores interactivity at a tourism-related Web site. The project has been in progress for some time, and we regret the unfortunate reality that the particular region we are studying is one that is currently experiencing tragedy. Nevertheless, the underlying principles that we are exploring remain important and we would like to ask you to participate in the study. Participation is simple and quick and it might even give you some ideas for your future research, Thank you in advance for your assistance with this research project. ***** Your help is needed in a Web-based study. Hi Lois et al, In response to your inquiry regarding Katrina's aftermath and teaching, I'll be using some of the many citizen journalism/blogosphere responses to Katrina as a case study in my Communication Studies unit iGeneration: Digital Communication & Participatory Culture (http://i- generation.blogspot.com/) I'm particularly interested in the way the blogosphere and mainstream media found common cause against the extremely slow response of the US Federal government and the way mainstream and citizen journalists hit a symbiotic approach, far more so than these two groups have in the past. My three starting points will be: (1) Kayne West's speech, the responses in all online media, and then the politics of the new, unauthorised mashup/remix of West's words with his #1 chart hit; (2) the way television and other "older" media are being used/quoted/remixed in blogs, especially in the Crooks & Liars (http://crooksandliars.com/) blog which has many, many (copyrighted) excerpts from mainstream TV; and (3) a compassion of the speed at which the Katrina Information Map (http://www.scipionus.com/) was constructed versus the snail's pace at which such information became available through any government authorities (incl. FEMA). I also expect students will come fully armed with their own interesting links and positions regarding the mediated responses to Katrina. This seminar won't be until October, but if you (or others on the list) are interested, I can post a follow-up on how my student's responded. Call for Papers THE PRAGMATICS OF COMPUTER-MEDIATED COMMUNICATION Editors: Susan Herring (Indiana University, USA) Dieter Stein (Heinrich Heine University, Germany) Tuija Virtanen (Abo Akademi University, Finland) Although many aspects of computer-mediated communication (CMC) have already been addressed by scholars from a number of disciplines, the pragmatic dimensions of CMC have yet to be fully accounted for. By "pragmatic" we intend a range of phenomena from the narrower sense of presupposition and speech act conditions, to sociopragmatic aspects such as politeness and genre, all of which are concerned in some way with language use and (social) meaning. Pragmatic effects are found in CMC modes that include instant messaging, SMS, weblogs, email, web forums, and experimental and graphical virtual worlds. They are produced by adults and adolescents (and sometimes children) at an increasing rate in a rapidly growing number of languages around the world. We invite submissions for an edited book on the Pragmatics of Computer-Mediated Communication, to be published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. Suggested topics include: - Gricean maxims and implicatures - Presuppositions and indirectness - The use of greetings, openings and closings - Speech acts and performativity - Naming and referring conventions - Cohesion and coherence - Applications of politeness theory to CMC - Analysis of new genres or genre-related features - Culture-specific effects - etc. Scholars working within diverse theoretical paradigms are encouraged to submit current research that addresses computer-mediated communication from pragmatic perspectives. The overarching goal of the book is to forge ties with existing pragmatic theory as regards language use phenomena in CMC, as well as to advance theoretical understanding of pragmatics through integrating technological mediation as an explanatory variable for language use. Submission Guidelines: Potential contributors should email a 500-700 word proposal OR a complete manuscript draft if one is available (no partial drafts, please), including a title, and describing the topic, CMC data, analytical methods, and (preliminary) findings or observations, to all three editors by November 1, 2005. Complete, polished versions of accepted proposals or drafts (approximately 7000-10000 words) will be due March 30, 2006. Publication of the book is anticipated by late 2007. Submitters are kindly asked to follow the style in the Pragmatics & Beyond New Series (John Benjamins). In addition to referencing the pragmatics literature, potential contributors should make efforts to cite existing literature on CMC and language. [Hope this is of interest to air-listers; apologies for x-posting] Call for papers special 'Mobile Phone Culture' issue of Continuum: Journal of Media and Cultural Studies (20.3, 2006) edited by Dr Gerard Goggin (g.goggin(a)uq.edu.au) Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies, University of Queensland, Australia In barely two decades since their commercial launch in the early 1980s, mobile telecommunications have now outstripped their fixed-phone counterparts, being used by over a billion people worldwide. Mobile phones play an indispensable and distinctive role in contemporary societies, woven into the transformation of work, leisure, relationships, family, sexualities, glocalization, identity formation, embodiment, and fashion and implicated in class, race, gender, and disability relations. There is now widespread interest in mobile phones among media producers, policy makers, industry, user groups, artists, and educators. And a vibrant, interdisciplinary body of work on social aspects of mobiles is now also emerging. Against this backdrop this special collection aims to focus attention on inquiry into mobile phone culture, and to promote systematic consideration of this important topic by cultural and media studies scholars.
