Dear Colleagues,
The Trump administration is using immigration law to punish and silence
disinformation researchers, advocates, and trust-and-safety professionals
on the basis of the misleading premise that by doing research and advocacy,
they are ‘complicit’ in censorship. Four researchers have publicly been
"barred" by the State Department, including several who had their visas
revoked. But the policy is so vague it can potentially encompass
researchers working on everything from fact-checking to researching
propaganda, misinformation, disinformation, algorithms and social media as
its potential targets. The government’s actions send a powerful chill
through all of these researchers currently on visas in the United States,
including me.
By making an example of these four researchers, it has become clear that
every researcher is under threat. We all get the message. This is why, as a
member of Coalition for Independent Technology Research, I have added my
own declaration next to those of threatened researchers in CITR v. Rubio.
We hope this important case being fought by the Knight First Amendment
Institute will protect the constitutional rights of visa-holders.
The First Amendment exists precisely to prevent the government from
punishing speech it dislikes. Right now the Trump Administration
is stifling the ability to have an informed debate about online platforms,
their responsibilities to their users and what role regulation should play.
Read more about the case, or read my declaration and the others submitted
here <https://knightcolumbia.org/cases/citr-v-rubio>.

International Conference on Software and Systems Reuse, Product Lines, and Configuration (VARIABILITY 2026): Last Call for Research Papers
by Announce 30 Mar '26
by Announce 30 Mar '26
30 Mar '26
*** Last Call for Research Papers ***
International Conference on Software and Systems Reuse, Product Lines,
and Configuration (VARIABILITY 2026)
29 September - 2 October 2026, 5* St. Raphael Resort and Marina
Limassol, Cyprus
https://conf.researchr.org/home/variability-2026
(*** Submission Deadline extended to 10 April 2026, AoE ***)
The International Conference on Software and Systems Reuse, Product Lines, and
Configuration (VARIABILITY 2026) invites high-quality contributions from researchers and
practitioners in software engineering, systems engineering, and related disciplines
focussing on a broad spectrum of methods, concepts, and tools for variability.
VARIABILITY aims to be the premier forum for the exchange of ideas, experiences, and
results in all aspects of software and systems variability management, reuse, software
configuration, and customization.
As software and systems become increasingly configurable, reusable, and adaptable,
managing their variability across all lifecycle phases is more critical—and more challenging
—than ever. VARIABILITY 2026 seeks to bring together the diverse communities that
address these challenges from theoretical, technical, and practical perspectives.
VARIABILITY results from a merge of three prominent conferences focussing on software
and systems variability, configuration and reuse: SPLC (the International Systems and
Software Product Line Conference, 29 successful editions), VaMoS (the International
Working Conference on Variability Modelling of Software-Intensive Systems, 19 successful
editions), and ICSR (the International Conference on Systems and Software Reuse, 22
successful editions).
VARIABILITY is by design open as a conference. It welcomes new fields of variability-
intensive research, such as artificial intelligence, hybrid software-hardware systems, etc.
For this first edition of VARIABILITY, we strive to continue the success of the predecessor
conferences ICSR, SPLC, and VaMoS by welcoming high-quality submissions for the
research track in numerous closely related areas, such as systems and software product
lines, systems and software reuse, configurable systems and software, product
configuration, and systems and software variability. We will award the best research paper
and the best artifact paper.

Publication of Proceedings
Accepted papers will be published in the VARIABILITY 2026 proceedings by Springer in the
LNCS series.
Submission Guidelines
Paper Types
We invite the following types of submissions:
• Full Papers (up to 18 pages excluding references): Research papers must present
original, unpublished work with validated results through empirical evaluation, formal
analysis, or implementation-based experiments. Submissions must clearly articulate the
problem, its relevance, the proposed contribution, and validation results.
• Short Papers (6 - 8 pages excluding references): Short papers present early-stage
research, novel ideas, or conceptual proposals that are not yet fully developed or
validated but offer promising directions. These papers should articulate the vision,
motivation, and potential impact.
Formatting
Papers must use the Springer LNCS template according to:
https://www.springer.com/gp/computer-science/lncs/conference-proceedings-gu…
Springer provides author guidelines that should be consulted for further details:
https://resource-preview-cms.springernature.com/springer-cms/rest/v1/conten…
Submission Link
Submissions should be made via Easy Chair, selecting the research track:
https://easychair.org/conferences?conf=variability2026
Paper Originality, Double-Anonymous Policy, Reviewing
All papers must be original and not under review elsewhere. Submissions will be double-
anonymous and reviewed by at least three experts. Submissions will be evaluated based
on their novelty, relevance, rigor, transparency, and presentation. Authors of submissions
to the first deadline might be invited to submit a revision of their papers to the second
deadline, which will be reviewed as a revision.
Revisions
Research-track papers can be submitted to the first or second cycle. In the first cycle,
papers can receive the following decisions: accept, revision, or reject. Revision means that
the reviewers believe that the paper has potential, but that its quality or contribution is
not yet ready for publication. Such papers are offered lightweight shepherding by a
community member, who is not necessarily a PC member or reviewer. Revised papers
should be submitted to the second cycle together with a response letter, explaining how
the reviewer comments were addressed. They are then reviewed by the same PC members.
Papers rejected in the first cycle can be resubmitted in the second cycle, but need to
contain an appendix “Changes to First-Cycle Submission” at the end of the PDF (after
references, regardless of the page limit) that lists the major changes in bullet-point format.
Best Paper Awards
Springer will sponsor the awards for bet papers with an overall amount of €1000.
Journal Special Issue
Selected accepted papers will be invited to submit extended versions with at least 30%
additional and original material, to be published in a special issue in a reputable Software
Engineering journal (currently under negotiation).

Dear World University and School community and networks, Association of
Internet Researchers, Universitians, all,
Greetings. And I hope this email finds you well. How are you doing?
A
With Julie Wong's Google Executive Engagement Lead Research, Labs,
Technology and Society 188 The Embarcadero SF, CA 94105 card in hand, which
she gave to me at a Stanford Hoover Institute event on AI productivity and
Jobs ...
Dear Julie, James (Manyika), Peter (Norvig), all,
Greetings, and thanks again for your card, Julie and James, at the Stanford
talk on
Productivity Gains And Labor Pains: What Will AI Do To Jobs?
https://www.hoover.org/events/productivity-gains-and-labor-pains-what-will-…
Not having heard back from you yet, Julie, and with Peter knowing both
wings of 1) World Univ & Sch (a 501 c 3 US federal tax exempt legal entity
AND a state of California exempt legal entity) AND the 2) WUaS Corporation
(a for-profit general stock company in the state of California legal
entity), knowing about the #GrowWithGoogleWUaS program, and knowing
Google/Alphabet's iterating IT, AI and ML infrastructures and divisions
(and see #PeterNorvig's INCREDIBLE #ToolifyAIWUaS article "Revolutionizing
Education with Machine Learning and AI": #WorldUniversityInSchool updated
March 2, 2024 -
https://www.toolify.ai/ai-news/revolutionizing-education-with-machine-learn…
-
and knowing how Google and Alphabet's 190,000 employees are organized, I've
added the email I sent you in this email thread on M 3/23/26, and more,
here to this blog post -
https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2026/03/ypsilopus-zimbabweensis-orchid-g…
(in
daily blog) and below in the PS. ...
https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2026/03/ypsilopus-zimbabweensis-orchid-g…
B
Again, and potentially for even clinical trials (RCTS - Randomized
Controlled Trials on drugs, for example)
I posit the reason that Google Street View with time slider seems to be
developing relatively slowly as part of a #RealisticVirtualEarthForSTEM -
eg at the Harbin Gate house ~ https://goo.gl/maps/7gSsSTweRCBo9gf87 {and in
the years 2007, 2012 and 2024 to start regarding coding for the
all-important #GTimeSlider with AI and ML} ~ https://twitter.com/HarbinBook
~ http://bit.ly/HarbinBook ~ & at the #GCellView #GMoleculeView etc levels
is because Google AI and ML and Large Language Models, and for
#UniversityTeachingHospitals too, are building these out and especially
developing and wrangling the datasets, code sources, the AI libraries, the
Wikidata AI & ML, eg for for aging reversal and extreme longevity eg even
in particular for #EarNoseThroat & #BrainStrokes' aging reversal etc. and
regarding. #WUaSMultimediaHospitalRoom prototypes.
C
How to make your voice heard and public World University and School
community, networks, and Universitians (and I ask as presiding and
recording clerk of World University and School)?
D
Again,
World University and School is seeking to accredit further:
I received this helpful video from the Middle States Commission on Higher
Education with offices in the greater Philadelphia Pennsylvania area on my
smartphone the other day
See too -
Your Voice Making Public Comments that Matter in Federal Policy (February
24, 2026)
https://youtu.be/nSwBGMpQRAA
with Professor Matsudaira, formerly inaugural Chief Economist at the
Department of Education
... and am writing further to follow up on how even to 'deploy the full
federal toolkit' (and see the MacArthur Foundation Urban.org set of Tweets
below, regarding this phrase) -
'2. Deploy the full federal toolkit.'
https://www.urban.org/urban-wire/three-principles-national-housing-affordab…
... to potentially begin to accredit free World University and School first
for students in the USA (BUT also for students in the other 200 countries -
just as students come from all over the world to go to MIT partly because
of its accreditation with NECHE - building on CC-4 licensed (which says
WUaS can 1) share, 2) adapt it, 3) but non-commercially). ...
Thoughts, ideas, ways to proceed, Heather Perfetti, President of Middle
States Commission on Higher Education in Philadelphia, and Professor
Matsudaira, formerly Deputy Under Secretary and inaugural Chief Economist
at U.S. Department of Education -
https://www.linkedin.com/in/jordan-matsudaira-0b440492/ - and Chief
Economist of the Council of Economic Advisers? (WUaS sought accreditation
initially with BPPE and WASC senior in California, as early as around 2012).
AND could World University and School even begin to matriculate students at
accrediting World University and School this autumn 2026?
E
Greetings from World University and School building on CC-4 licensed MIT
OCW in 7 languages (https://opencw.aprende.org/courses/translated-courses/
& https://opencw.aprende.org/courses/ & https://ocw.mit.edu/) and
Wikipedia / Wikidata in ~342 active languages. World University and School
continues to plan online free to students' Bachelor, PhD, Law, MD, IB high
school / similar, AA/AS and Master's degrees, in each of all ~200
countries and in their main languages, and as WUaS proceeds with
accreditation, and in a #GrowWithGoogleWUaS program too.
F
And to Revolutionize Education with Machine Learning and AI with World
University In School
And see again the incredible #ToolifyAIWUaS article by Peter Norvig, Google
AI Director, re World University and School building on MIT OCW in 7
languages, and Wikidata as backend structured knowledge database re
Wikipedia in about ~342 languages -
Revolutionizing Education with Machine Learning and AI
#WorldUniversityInSchool
Updated on Mar 02,2024
https://www.toolify.ai/ai-news/revolutionizing-education-with-machine-learn…
Per this #ToolifyAIWUaS article too, World University and School is
developing a #RealisticVirtualEarth #ForSTEM - & think in
#GoogleStreetView with #GTimeSliders, #GMaps, & #GeminiAI and at the
#GCellView and #GMoleculeView levels - and as STEM field sites, and
classrooms, for new kinds of digital university learning experiences ...
G
How best to further develop WUaS publishing from Google Street View with
time slider, text in the sidebar, and in all 7159 living languages (and for
the next Physical-Digital Harbin Hot Springs' ethnographic book project
too)? Having taught at at least one university from a textbook, WUaS is
also seeking to move beyond the textbook for our free online WUaS degrees
as we accredit, - and, again, the 2nd wing of WUaS, the WUaS Corporation /
Educational Services' Stores / Academic Press at WUaS in 7,159 living
languages with ML and with human and machine translation, seeks to invent
the book anew, publishing FROM Google Street View #TextInTheSidebar ...

Great to meet you on Tue March 17, 2026 at Stanford Hoover Institute at the

Dear Julie, James (Manyika), Peter (Norvig), all,
Greetings, and thanks again for your card, Julie and James, at the Stanford
talk on
Productivity Gains And Labor Pains: What Will AI Do To Jobs?
https://www.hoover.org/events/productivity-gains-and-labor-pains-what-will-…
Not having heard back from you yet, Julie, and with Peter knowing both
wings of 1) World Univ & Sch (a 501 c 3 US federal tax exempt legal entity
AND a state of California exempt legal entity) AND the 2) WUaS Corporation
(a for-profit general stock company in the state of California legal
entity), knowing about the #GrowWithGoogleWUaS program, and knowing
Google/Alphabet's iterating IT, AI and ML infrastructures and divisions
(and see #PeterNorvig's INCREDIBLE #ToolifyAIWUaS article "Revolutionizing
Education with Machine Learning and AI": #WorldUniversityInSchool updated
March 2, 2024 -
https://www.toolify.ai/ai-news/revolutionizing-education-with-machine-learn…
-
and knowing how Google and Alphabet's 190,000 employees are organized, I've
added the email I sent you in this email thread on M 3/23/26, and more,
here to this blog post -
https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2026/03/ypsilopus-zimbabweensis-orchid-g…
(in
daily blog) and below in the PS.
WUaS (the WUaS Corporation) would eventually seek to produce
pharmaceuticals too, besides doing randomized clinical trials (RCTs) in a
#RealisticVirtualEarthForClinicalTrials (drawing sample populations from
all 7.9 billion people on the planet), - and for aging reversal and extreme
longevity genetic drug therapies emerging especially, FDA approved with
time ... and in a #RealisticVirtualEarthForPharmaceuticals with a
#RealisticVirtualEarthForGenetics ... and with both Google's Isomorphic
Labs (founded by Demis Hassabis) producing pharmaceuticals and Alphabet's
Calico Labs too, working on developing these vaccines/drugs/pharmaceuticals
too (and possibly other Google organizations).
Eventually, and possibly as a first hire, WUaS would seek a possible
Harvard MBA or similar to become the WUaS CEO, but WUaS has no money to
speak of whatsoever - and as WUaS seeks to hire about 2.5 million people
over the next 50-100 years in each of all 200 countries and among speakers
of all 7159 living languages.
How best also to develop the #WUaSMultimediaHospitalRoom prototype in the
shop in a newly safe, vacant, with property deed 670 Ridgecrest Rd, Canyon,
CA 94516 in all of this?
And how best to communicate about this further with you as World Univ & Sch
seeks further to grow in all ~200 countries in the world and in their
official languages (per the Olympics) free major online world class
research and teaching universities, and in all 7,159 known living
languages, as wiki schools for open wiki-teaching and wiki-learning too,
and in a #RealisticVirtualEarth #ForEverything?
Best regards, abolition, thanks so much,
Scott GK MacLeod

Dear Vivek,
(https://www.linkedin.com/in/vivekhutheesing/)
Thanks for your emails as well. I looked at your App briefly before your
emails. World Univ & Sch in a #GrowWithGoogleWUaS program, and in seeking
to code for all 7.9 billion people on the planet, each a Wikidata PIN #
from here -
https://wiki.worlduniversityandschool.org/wiki/You_at_World_University -
and to facilitate people to people free universal education with free WUaS
degrees online from home - Bachelor, PhD, Law, MD, IB high school / sim AA
/ AS and Master's degrees in each of all 200 countries and in their main
languages - and with wiki-teaching and wiki-learning for speakers of all
7159 known living languages in 200 countries, and to end poverty
potentially, with a partnering email from Stanford Mine Pi cryptocurrency -
https://minepi.com/sgkmac - free money daily ... and by seeking to
distribute it most people on the planet, and potentially the poorest 1
billion to end poverty, as the WUaS Corporation, our WUaS 2 wing, seeks
also reimbursement from departments of education, and central banks for
getting Mine Pi cryptocurrency from WUaS itself, possibly by multi-listing
on most of all of ~ 200 countries' stock exchanges eventually. Are you in
communication with Waymo, an Alphabet subsidiary? With your MBA degree I'd
think you'd have some great ideas re WUaS with time.
2 B
Just emailed a 2nd time regarding #GrowWithGoogleWUaS's Julie Wong Google
Executive Engagement Lead, Research, Labs, Technology and Society, which
you'll find here toward the bottom (and had BCC-ed Pin and Ed too with
this) -
https://scott-macleod.blogspot.com/2026/03/ypsilopus-zimbabweensis-orchid-g…
- and suggested WUaS might be seeking a Harvard MBA or similar to develop
the 2nd wing of WUaS, the WUaS corporation / the Press at WUaS in 7159
languages, the WUaS Educational Services' Stores -
http://worlduniversityandschool.org/AcademicPress.html - and as WUaS seeks
also to develop pharmaceuticals / vaccines for aging reversal and extreme
longevity FDA approved (and RCTs for these 10 years on average I've read),
albeit WUaS has no money to speak of whatsoever; I haven't mentioned in
these emails however World University and School being 8 limbs of
Yoga-informed. Please keep WUaS in mind if you know of someone with a
Harvard MBA or similar (since you went to Cornell for a BA in Finance, and
Columbia for a MBA, I've read on your Linkedin).

What are 10 great Indian novels inspired by Yoga, possibly comic, along the
lines of Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard?
Yoga in novels question - What are 10 great novels from India that are
potentially inspired by Yoga Asana, 8 limbs of Yoga, Patanjali's Yoga,
possibly comic, and along the lines of "Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard" by
Kieran Desai?
https://g.co/gemini/share/6e13f65bb682
Finding novels that capture the specific blend of whimsical satire,
spiritual absurdity, and the structured philosophy of Yoga found in
Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard is a delightful challenge.
While many Indian novels touch on spirituality, these ten selections
specifically lean into the "limbs" of Yoga—from the physical discipline of
Asana to the ethical constraints of Yama and Niyama—often through a lens of
irony, comedy, or social critique.
1. The Guide by R.K. Narayan
This is perhaps the closest spiritual cousin to Desai’s work. It follows
Raju, a tour guide who, through a series of comic misunderstandings, is
mistaken for a holy man. It explores the Niyamas (internal disciplines) and
the unintended path to Samadhi (enlightenment) with a sharp, dry wit.

How do restorative Yoga asanas Yoga poses, especially shoulder stand
salamba sarvangasana and bridge pose setu bandha sarvangasana reduce or
reverse inflammation in cells and gene expression - and regarding
developing aging reversal and extreme longevity genetic drug therapies and
vaccines? What are the scientific studies that examine this ?
https://gemini.google.com/share/1fc9b346dbdf
The intersection of yoga, transcriptomics (gene expression), and longevity
is a rapidly growing area of research. While ancient traditions view poses
like Shoulder Stand ($Sālamba Sarvaṅgāsana$) and Bridge Pose ($Setu Bandha
Sarvaṅgāsana$) as youth-preserving, modern science translates this into the
downregulation of chronic inflammation and the stabilization of cellular
aging markers.
Here is a breakdown of how restorative yoga influences genetics and
cellular biology, the limits of current research, and how it relates to
modern longevity therapies.
------------------------------
1. Yoga and Gene Expression: The Science
Modern research does not usually isolate a *single* pose for genetic
testing; instead, it studies *comprehensive yoga programs* (comprising
asanas, pranayama/breathwork, and meditation).
The scientific consensus is that yoga modulates the *Conserved
Transcriptional Response to Adversity (CTRA)*—a genetic profile triggered
by chronic stress that elevates pro-inflammatory genes and suppresses
antiviral genes.
Key Molecular Mechanisms Observed:
-
*Downregulation of NF-$\kappa$B:* Nuclear Factor kappa B is the "master
switch" for inflammation. Yoga practice consistently downregulates NF-
$\kappa$B, reducing the transcription of pro-inflammatory cytokines like
*IL-6* (Interleukin-6) and *TNF-$\alpha$* (Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha).
-
*Upregulation of Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1):* Known as the "longevity gene,"
SIRT1 regulates epigenetic stability, DNA repair, and mitochondrial
function.
-
*Telomere Maintenance:* Studies on Yoga and Meditation-Based Lifestyle
Interventions (YMLI) show significant increases in *telomerase
activity* (the
enzyme that maintains the protective caps on your chromosomes) and
reductions in oxidative DNA damage (measured by markers like 8-OH2dG).
*Key Study Example:* A 12-week restorative Iyengar yoga intervention (which
heavily utilizes supported bridge and inversions) was shown to reduce
inflammation-related gene expression and NF-$\kappa$B signaling in fatigued
breast cancer survivors (*Ey et al.; Bower et al.*).
------------------------------
2. Physiological Effects of Shoulder Stand and Bridge Pose
While we cannot say "Bridge Pose alone changes Gene X," we do know the
specific physiological triggers these poses induce, which act as mechanical
and systemic catalysts for cellular shifts:
A. Baroreflex and Parasympathetic Activation
Both poses place the neck in a flexion "throat lock" (*Jālandhara Bandha*).
-
*Mechanics:* This applies gentle pressure to the carotid sinus
baroreceptors (pressure sensors in the neck).
-
*Molecular Consequence:* The brain interprets this as high blood
pressure and triggers the *vagus nerve* to calm the nervous system. Vagus
nerve stimulation is a potent inhibitor of systemic inflammation (known as
the *cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway*).
B. Fluid Shifts and Lymphatic Drainage
Shoulder stand is a full inversion, and Bridge is a mild inversion.
-
*Mechanics:* Reversing the pull of gravity drives venous blood and
lymphatic fluid from the lower extremities toward the thoracic cavity and
heart.
-
*Molecular Consequence:* This reduces interstitial edema (swelling) and
facilitates the clearing of metabolic waste and cellular debris.
------------------------------
3. The Leap to Genetic Drug Therapies & Vaccines
To be direct as a peer: *Yoga does not operate like a genetic vaccine or a
molecular drug therapy.* It is vital to separate the holistic, systemic
reset of yoga from targeted biotechnology.
-
*How Biotechnology Works (Drugs/Vaccines):* Extreme longevity drugs
(like senolytics, rapalogs, or mRNA therapies) target highly specific,
isolated pathways (like mTOR pathways, clearing senescent "zombie" cells,
or Yamanaka factor epigenetic reprogramming) using precise chemical
delivery.
-
*How Yoga Works (Systemic Reset):* Yoga alters gene expression *upstream* by
altering your internal environment. By shifting the autonomic nervous
system from sympathetic (fight-or-flight) to parasympathetic
(rest-and-digest), you lower cortisol and oxidative stress. This "tells"
the cells they are safe, which naturally shifts genetic expression toward
repair rather than defense.
Yoga is a lifestyle intervention that optimizes the biological terrain,
while genetic vaccines are targeted microscopic interventions. They are
complementary, but functional equivalents.
------------------------------
4. Notable Scientific Literature
If you are building your Realistic Virtual Earth or research databases,
here are the foundational research verticals to review:
*Research Focus* *Notable Findings & Mechanisms* *Key Scientific Pathways*
*Systemic Reviews of Yoga Transcriptomics* Yoga leaves a "molecular
signature," downregulating stress-induced inflammatory genes. NF-$\kappa$B,
IL-6, TNF-$\alpha$, SIRT1
*Telomerase & Cellular Aging* 12-week Yoga-Based Lifestyle Interventions
(YBLI) improve telomerase activity and reduce oxidative stress. Telomerase,
8-OH2dG, TAC
*Vagally-Mediated Anti-inflammatory Pathway* Postures affecting the carotid
baroreceptors stimulate the vagus nerve to halt systemic cytokine
production. Acetylcholine, Macrophages
------------------------------

titles regarding yoga transcriptomics and telomere biology for your

What roles do computational infrastructures and their embedded values,
priorities, and assumptions play in making knowledge about planetary
futures? How do computational ensembles pull together computing
architectures, data pipelines, calculative practices, and institutional
settings to make climate knowledge actionable? What happens to
uncertainty and the incomputable richness of ecologies as computational
models become decisive in managing Earth futures?
In this seminar, Michael Richardson and Adrian Mackenzie offer two
works-in-progress as invitations for a robust discussion of climate
modelling and planetary computation as increasingly operative ensembles for
making and managing futures.
---
*Computing Earth: what sort of thing is a computable planet?*
Michael Richardson (with Anna Munster, Adrian Mackenzie, Baden
Pailthorpe, Kathrin Maurer & Antoine Bousquet)
Earth is increasingly staged as a computable object: not a singular
replica, but an operational object assembled through technical ensembles
that render Earth systems addressable, actionable, and governable. Drawing
on Simondon and theories of computability, we argue that planetary
computation stabilises prediction as decision by coordinating models,
datasets, compute infrastructures, standards, interfaces, and institutional
mandates. Using Destination Earth (DestinE) as a diagnostic case, we show
how platform gateways, data backbones, and twin engines package
probabilistic projections and scenario products for intervention contexts.
Incomputability persists as operational remainder, intensified by
machine-learning compression, surrogates, and latent spaces that
redistribute uncertainty as risk.
Michael Richardson is Professor of Media & Culture at UNSW Sydney and a
Chief Investigator with the ARC Centre of Excellence on Automated
Decision-Making + Society. His latest book is *Nonhuman Witnessing: War,
Ecology, and Data after the End of the World* (Duke University Press, 2024).
Coupled sensitivities: calculative agencies and overflows in climate
overshoot
Adrian Mackenzie
Climate models function as an experiential membrane. Rather than being mere
diagnostic tools, these computational ensembles form a "membrane" that
filters and shapes human experiences of time, agency, and mundane
feelings of comfort or discomfort. Senses of crisis or futures, and the
witnessing of injustice or loss are now fundamentally inseparable from the
calculative agency of models. Modeling, however, is a dynamic calculative
agency. It uses "framing" to disentangle the climate as calculable
geophysical and socioeconomic processes. This framing inevitably produces
"incessant overflows" that can be seen at various points over the last few
decades. Anomalies defy existing computational frames and force a recursive
re-evaluation of models and the propositions they support. Describing the
temporal effects of these overflows, the paper will suggest that 'coupled
sensitivity' reconfigures what counts as experience of climate. This
concept designates a shift where the physical susceptibility of the Earth
system to change becomes inextricably linked to the heightened sensitivity
and attunement imbued with model projections, scenarios, attributions and
pathways. Contemporary engagements with anxiety, inaction, or overshoot
might be understood in terms of coupled sensitivity.

Reason and Communication: Jürgen Habermas’s Legacy for Media and Communication Studies
by Christian Fuchs 27 Mar '26
by Christian Fuchs 27 Mar '26
27 Mar '26
Christian Fuchs. 2026. Reason and Communication: Jürgen Habermas’s
Legacy for Media and Communication Studies. tripleC: Communication,
Capitalism & Critique 24 (1): 54-72. https://doi.org/10.31269/7112an90
What is Jürgen Habermas’s legacy for media and communication studies?
Jürgen Habermas (1929-2026), a towering figure in critical theory,
profoundly shaped media and communication studies by emphasising
communication as the cornerstone of social existence. His theory of
communicative action, rooted in the interplay between language, culture,
and society, redefined communication as both a means of social
reproduction and a site of democratic potential. Habermas’s concept of
the public sphere – where communicative rationality confronts
instrumental reason – remains essential for analysing how power
structures, from capitalism to digital authoritarianism, distort
democratic discourse. His critique of the colonisation of the lifeworld
by systemic forces such as money and power offers a framework for
assessing contemporary challenges, including algorithmic control,
fragmented digital publics, and the rise of far-right ideologies online.
By linking communication to emancipatory ideals, Habermas challenged
scholars to interrogate the tensions between economic imperatives and
democratic promises. His anti-fascist stance, informed by post-war
Germany’s reckoning with Nazism, underscores the urgency of defending
universalism and humanism against resurgent authoritarianism. While his
dualisms (e.g., lifeworld vs system) invite debate, Habermas’s legacy
lies in his insistence that communication is not merely instrumental but
inherently normative – a space for contesting domination and imagining
alternatives. This article explores how Habermas’s ideas on
communication, the public sphere, and (anti-)fascism provide critical
tools to navigate today’s mediated landscapes, where digital capitalism
and ideological polarisation threaten the very foundations of democratic
dialogue. Engaging with Habermas means confronting his blind spots while
building on his vision of communication as a recursive process of social
transformation. His work compels us to ask: How can we reclaim the
public sphere in an era of algorithmic fragmentation and ideological
extremism? Habermas’s answers, though provisional, remain indispensable
for theorising communication’s role in fostering – or undermining –
justice and solidarity.

Research Track Paper Categories
The research track at ISSRE 2026 invites high-quality submissions of technical research
papers that describe original, unpublished results exploring new scientific ideas,
contribute new evidence to established research directions, or reflect on practical
experience. Specifically, ISSRE solicits submissions in three categories:
• Research (RES) papers
• Practical experience reports (PER)
• Tools and artefacts (TAR) papers
Papers will be assessed with criteria appropriate to each category. All the papers of the
three categories are regular and full papers, and will be published in the same ISSRE
proceedings.
RES Papers
RES papers (12 pages, including references) should describe a novel contribution to the
reliability of software systems. Novelty should be argued via concrete evidence and
appropriate positioning within the state of the art. RES papers are also expected to
explain the validation process and its limitations clearly.
PER Papers
PER papers (12 pages, including references) should provide an in-depth exposition of
practical experiences ideally performed by a collaboration of researchers and industry
practitioners. The key contribution of these papers should be lessons learned from
applying established research tools and methods to ISSRE topics, or new knowledge
acquired through empirical studies conducted using various research methodologies.
Negative results are welcome, e.g., discussing where or why current research cannot be
applied in an industrially relevant context.
TAR Papers
TAR papers (6 – 10 pages, including references) should describe a new tool or artefact.
Tool-focused TAR papers must present either a new tool or a novel and substantial
extension of an existing tool. They should include a description of (i) the theoretical
foundations, (ii) the design and implementation aspects, and (iii) experiments with
realistic case studies. Making the tool publicly available is strongly encouraged.
Artefact-focused TAR papers should cover (i) a working copy of the software and (ii)
experimental data sets. Dataset papers should introduce a new dataset that supports
experimentation, benchmarking, evaluation, or training in AI-driven software engineering.
Submissions should describe: (i) dataset motivation and scope, (ii) data collection and
processing methodology, (iii) dataset structure and statistics, and (iv) potential use cases.
Benchmark papers should present a new benchmark suite for evaluating tools, LLMs, or
algorithms. Submissions should include: (i) benchmark design principles, (ii) task
definitions and evaluation metrics, (iii) baseline results, and (iv) reproducibility package.
The ISSRE conference encourages authors of all three categories of research track papers
to follow the principles of transparency, reproducibility, and replicability. Authors are
encouraged to disclose data to increase reproducibility and replicability. Should the paper
be accepted, the authors will have the opportunity (and are encouraged to) submit
artifacts to the Artifact Evaluation (AE) track, to enhance the reproducibility and quality of
the research. By submitting your artifacts, you not only contribute to the progress of our
field but also stand a chance to earn badges that will be displayed on your papers in the
conference proceedings, showcasing the credibility and rigor of your work.
At least one author of each accepted paper must register as an author and present the
paper in person at the conference.
Best Research Paper Award
ISSRE is pleased to announce the IEEE Best Research Paper Award, awarded every year to
the best paper in the Research Track.
Special Journal Issue
Authors of accepted papers will be invited to submit an extended version of their work to
a special issue of the Empirical Software Engineering (EMSE) journal (under negotiation as
in previous editions of the conference). The Call for Papers will be available soon.

during the reviewing process, but papers accompanied by nondisclosure agreement forms
are not acceptable and will be rejected without review.
Changes in the number and order of authors will not be allowed after the paper
acceptance.
Authors must anonymize their submissions in accordance with the guidelines above.
Submissions violating the formatting and anonymization rules will be desk-rejected
without review. There will be no extensions for reformatting.
Conference Proceedings
The authors of accepted papers must omit the paper’s type from the title to keep
consistency among all the camera-ready versions in the proceedings. The conference
proceedings will be published by IEEE Computer Society Conference Publishing Services
(CPS). Papers presented at the conference will be submitted for inclusion into IEEE Xplore
and to all of the A&I (abstracting and indexing) partners (such as the EI Compendex).

Dear colleagues,
The CRC Media of Cooperation at the University of Siegen (Germany) is happy to invite you to the “Un/Making Boundaries” Conference on 16 and 17 April 2026!
This conference taking place on location in the city centre of Siegen (exact location will be communicated upon registration) will feature interdisciplinary discussions of the role of seams, borders and fences in the contemporary sensor media environments that ubiquitously permeate urban and rural spaces as well as borderlands without being necessarily visible or directly accessible for academic inquiry or public scrutiny.
Please find a short version of the conference abstract below and the complete abstract, including an overview of the conference program in attached PDF.
Conference “Un/Making Boundaries:
Seams, Borders, and Fences in Sensor Media Environments”
Dates: 16 - 17 April 2026
Location: University of Siegen (on location)
Registration: https://my.liberaforms.org/registration-unmaking-boundaries
Digital media are marked by particular ambivalences towards bordering and the un/making of all kinds of boundaries. To function as seamlessly as possible, such media depend on the interoperability of various hardware and software components, devices and apps as well as on the expectations and practices of those who shape and operate them. Today’s sensor societies’ (cf. Andrejevic and Burdon 2015) promise of ‘seamless interoperability’ drives the growing implementation of so-called ‘smart’, networked computational infrastructures in urban and rural environments, for the governance of public spaces and to establish and uphold border regimes, in order to sense, capture and control human and non-human entities. Such ‘smart’ computational infrastructures thrive on and bring about increasingly unbounded - or “frameless” (Andrejevic 2018) - modes of data collection.
This conference aims at bringing three sites where boundaries are made, un- and re-made into a fruitful dialogue, inquiring into (deep) bordering as cooperative practice and the (re)configuration of seamlessness as an ongoing achievement:
1. In the southern EU borderlands, asymmetric seamless data collection translates into violent regimes of migration control, into practices of sensing and counter-sensing those regimes, and into attempts to cross material and digital borders.
2. On ‘smart’ farms, the virtualisation of pasture fencing creates zones in which containment or exclusion is negotiated between more-than-human actors, that is, between livestock and the various devices used for tracking, monitoring and, ultimately, restricting their movement via operant conditioning.
3. In urban spaces, “smart city” discourses and their innovation agenda’s promise to optimise the management of public spaces through platform technologies and networked digital devices offering “seamless” interaction and interoperability, while everyday practices of governing and navigating urban areas reveal their socio-technical “seams” opening up opportunities for situational forms of critical engagement.
The conference features both contributions that engage with these sites and contributions that offer a theoretical meta-perspective on seams, borders, frames and their respective absences.
